Sleeping Angel
Dedicated to Arlene H. Rist, my mother.
When you were awake
You were as lively
As a waterfall.
Your laughs were as
Good as the sound of gold
Your advice was better
Than that of any adage.
When I saw you in pain,
I wanted to cry.
But I didn’t want you to
See or hear me lose hope.
However I never did lose hope.
Not until I saw your motionless in
A beautiful wooden coffin.
The service was beautiful.
It showed me how important
You were not only in my life,
But in the lives of so many other people.
You brought a family together
That was beginning to separate.
You were accepted into a family
That was never yours by blood.
You were buried next to someone
That you called a mother
Even though you were not born of her.
However I’m happy
That you are no longer in pain.
You did an amazing job here on earth
So you take a long rest in heaven.
Sleep like an angel
For that is what you were
And will always be to me.
