Most of my "buddies" are previous students. Of those 457 on AIM, about 220 are students; the rest are people I hand out with and talk to frequently.

AIM - 158 --i reached the max of 200 once so I had to let some folks go.
MSN - 70 something
YIM - 40 something
ICQ - 1 --my friend Abby. Poor soul. The only one using ICQ.

95 total. 38 miscellaneous buddies/irl friends, 5 that I met in a college recruitment sorta thing, 32 from YWS, and 19 from RPG forums. I'm using Trillian, so it would be hard for me to find out how many are on each list.
