We had to write an essay as part of an audition for my Theatre Class' play. This is my essay, and I really want this part. I need all the help I can get, because I've never been that great at essays.
Quick thing you need to know: The play is about the death of King Menes, the first king of Egypt after Lower and Upper Egypt became one nation, and the succeeding coronation of King Narmer.
Oh, and this is due tommorow, so critique quickly!
Here it is:
After looking over all of the possible parts, I have decided that I would like to play King Narmer. One reason I chose him is because I related to many of the emotions that he displays in the play. I also feel I am qualified to play a part that has a major role(the importance of Narmer to the story was not a major factor in my decision). Lastly, Ancient Egypt and its culture had always been interesting to me. Because of these reasons, I feel Narmer is the best role for me.
I feel very connected to Narmer as a character. In the play, when Menes died, and Narmer reacted so strongly, I understood his feelings. I lost my uncle to MS quite a while ago, and I remember what a shock it was, even though my uncle had been in the hospital for a few months before he died. Even when you tell yourself for so long, “They’ll die any day now,” you never hear the news and not be shocked. I was very close with my uncle, as Narmer was with his father, I imagine, which only worsens all of this. I related to Narmer on this level quite deeply.
I also feel very qualified for this role. Last year, in my first theatre class in my life, I was chosen out of about 25 or so people to be one of the ten people in the 8th graders’ show. My teacher, Mrs. O’Brien, stated that I was gifted multiple times over the semester I took the class. Naturally, seeing as this was my first class, I needed polishing up, so I wasn’t perfect, by any means, but I did pick up on these things quickly. I also am an avid writer, and one of the aspects I focus on in my writing is dialogue. I always focus heavily on realism, and I always say lines aloud, which usually lets me know if a person would actually say that. However, I do appreciate the poetic aspect of the lines in the play, and I would also do my best to preserve that aspect of them.
Lastly, my interest in Ancient Egypt. Egypt has always been more interesting to me than other cultures because it is very different from them. I have looked into the early kings of Egypt, and it seems that there is quite a bit of confusion about the first king of the first dynasty, Narmer, and Menes, who unified Upper and Lower Egypt. It seems to me that Menes was likely considered by the Egyptians to be the last ruler of “Dynasty 0”, as historians call it, and Narmer, the next succeeding king, to be the first king of the first dynasty. See, King Menes likely started out as king of either Upper or Lower Egypt, and thus listed as such. He then likely unified the nations together. As a result, King Narmer would then be considered the first king of the united country, and Menes, the final ruler of one of the separated “sectors” of Egypt.
I feel I am very qualified for this role in the play. I feel very similar to Narmer as a person. I also feel I have the talent needed to fulfill this role. Lastly, I have knowledge of the history of Egypt to help me look into this character. As you said earlier today, “Gimme the job”. Hehe.
