Exam Blues

The sun outside is blazing yellow,
but my inside walls are grey.
Footsteps and temples
pounding, clocks ticking time away.

This isn’t how I imagined life,
scrambling for every mark.
Right now, joining the circus
sounds like a better lark.

The tables creak and spit,
snarling threats of failing.
I look over to my best friend,
whose rosy cheeks are paling.

Flip, flip, flip,
go the papers in their hands.
I wonder do they know, that they’re
kneeling to the system’s demands?

I try to read the question,
but my stomach knots too tight.
And although I fly from my desk,
I’m ready for the fight.

I’m ready for a world,
where answers don’t mean a lot.
You might say ‘But why?’
but for full marks… ‘Why not?’
We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.

Oscar Wilde.

I really enjoyed this.
My exams start on tuesday so it was an interesting piece.
I like the rhyming structure as well.

Not too sure about the lines..
"Right now, joining the circus
sounds like a better lark. "

Circus? What..
Bit random.
But I suppose it just adds contrast.

Good poem overall in my opinion.
Check out my blog. A million questions...

Being less than 5 days away from an exam myself i can completely relate to this poem and really liked it too.

I do agree with the other post that the circus bit was a bit random.

The last part i didn't really get but that may not be my own fault and not your own.

A subject right from the boring life! Haha.

Footsteps and temples
pounding, clocks ticking time away.

This didn't really sound very good, it would be better if you put that "pounding" with the comma to the previous line... Get it? ;)

I look over to my best friend,
whose rosy cheeks are paling.

This was kind of awkward as well... Or at least the word "paling" is. That is probably a real word (I don't know, I'm not a native English-speaker) but it did sound a little strange.

The fourth stanza could have a better flow, but the last one was my favourite.

but for full marks… ‘Why not?’ Great. That was funny :)

I liked this poem! See you around, E!
