A Thousand Little Animals

Last night I dreamed of a thousand little animals.
A thousand little animals without faces or voices
That could make their way through life
Without needing to see or hear or eat.
A thousand blind, deaf, and dumb animals,
Walking around a barren field,
Indifferent to the world around them.

I wanted to shout at these animals.
I wanted to tell them
That they were going to need to eat,
That they were going to run into each other,
That they were going to die.
But they didn't care;
They kept walking around,
Like it was just another day.

As the sky above me turned to black,
Each of those thousand little animals
Fell to the ground.
Collapsed,
As if the weight of a thousand worlds
Came crashing down upon them,
And there they died,
Their bodies still,
Their limbs limp.

And that was the end of a thousand little animals,
A thousand little animals without faces or voices,
With nothing to do but roam around,
Blind, deaf, and dumb.

Interesting writing, very unique.
I'm not really entirely sure what this is about, or how to interpret it, so perhaps a brief intro or sidenote might help.

I like it, but I don't like it.

I want it to have some grand meaning, and perhaps it does, but I'm not sure I can even see it. Of course, you should flat out tell us, that's just bad writing... But it's hard to pick up on the meaning behind these thousand little animals... if you're ignorant to the world around you, you will die? It's plain...and that's my other problem. All you do in this poem is tell. I want metaphors and imagery and all of those things that make poetry really amazing and awesome, and this is only telling. I'm left thinking of animal crackers... it just doesn't leave me with anything, not only because it's a bit plain in how it was written, but also because the meaning is hard to grasp, and even if I have, the meaning seems kind of... plain.

Also, blind, deaf, and dumb seems cliché...I'm not sure that it is, it's just the explanation of a mute, but it's so... used. euh. I am not sure I'm helpful, you know? But those are my thoughts.
“It's necessary to have wished for death in order to know how good it is to live.”
― Alexandre Dumas, The Count of Monte Cristo

Grief, I’ve learned, is really just love. It’s all the love you want to give, but cannot. All that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in that hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go.
