The moons white rays sparkled on the tip of Astrid's black snout, turning her dark maw silver. She closed her eyes and threw back her head, slowly parting her lips and letting out a high calming howl. Not to far off the muscular brown figure of Oak could be traced through the shadowy forest. His paws were a faint drum in the night. His ears twitched at the sound of his mentor's howl. He barked and pelted forwards, his body a dark streak in the moonlight. Astrid lowered her head contently. She kept her eyes closed and savored her beautiful howl as it slipped through the night. She tilted her head at the sound of rapid paw steps. She smiled as she recognized them as the ones of her apprentice.

Hi there Gwennie! (Please excuse me for calling you that if you despise it XD)

Alright, this piece is very powerful (and actually, I seem to notice a similar theme as in the writing of your cuisine --how odd :P) but it is a bit too short to work as its self... in my opinion anyway. I think that either you should extend it so that it is three or four times as long as this, or make it the prologue to something longer. It would work well either way.

If you want to make it longer, this is how I recommend going about it: Go into more detail. One whole chapter in Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck is just about a tortoise crossing the road, but he adds so much description and commentary that... well... it's just masterful :D Anyway, I'm getting off-topic. I just mean to say that with the little bit of information you have here you can make a piece at least three times as long if you are so inclined.

The moons white rays sparkled on the tip of Astrid's black snout, turning her dark maw silver.

I think it should be "moon's"... and what's a maw?

That's the only thing that bothered me. Otherwise, very nice. Just try to show more than tell and you'll be very well off :D

PM me with questions/comments!
~Azila~

P.S. I have a piece called Midnight too :D ...just thought I'd tell you that.

That seems familiar :P From the old guild, *sighs*

You wrote:

---------------------
I think there should be a comma after 'high'

You wrote:
His paws were a faint drum in the night. His ears twitched at the sound of his mentor's howl.
-----------------
Starting both of the sentences seem choppy and somewhat awkward, because (in my opinion) you started them both with 'His'.

You wrote:
She tilted her head at the sound of rapid paw steps. She smiled as she recognized them as the ones of her apprentice.
------------------
This also sounds choppy, I would suggest doing something similar to the sentence below to help it flow better:
She tilted her head at the sound of approaching paw steps, and smiled as she recognized them as those of her apprentice.

You wrote:
She kept her eyes closed and savored her beautiful howl as it slipped through the night.
----------------------
Since you are Canadian, 'savored' should be 'savoured'

Overall:
I like it; as Azila said, it is very powerful. But also as she suggested, I agree that you should add more detail.
Furthermore, I think that you used words ending in 'ight' a bit too often. Although the only two were moonlight and night, you used them close together and the effect sounds odd.
Overall, this is an interesting piece and if you made it longer and fixed it up a bit it could be truly spectacular.

Ayra
