*scrunches nose* I hate working out where these things go.

The cannons boomed; smoke billowing from their empty mouths. One by one, the ramparts fell as the wood burnt thick black smog. As the hazy sun filtered through the already darkening sky, the enemy had struck one final blow upon those who were within Caiene’s wall. The thunder of many cannons blasted offensively as the wall crumbled down upon its defenders, with the screams of anguish and horror filling the air.

The yells of pain echoed in the cavernous valley as sounds of death pitched through living ears. The allies were demoralised with their men dying around them; no end to the slaughter in sight. Those few who were not gushing blood were standing fast, and retaliating to the cannons with fierce firepower. But their cause was lost. Their home was in ruins. It was the end.

War rendered the air thick with the stench of death and decay with the taste of blood falling hard upon every tongue. A slick river of blood pooled out the doors of the city; signs of children murdered where they huddled, their eyes staring sightless into the souls of their captors. Their mouths were frozen in the forms of their plaintive cries. Mothers, fathers and grandparents, all were dead, lying broken and bleeding in their homes. Lives thrust into the oblivion of the underworld merely for existing.

There was no longer anyone to fight, for or against. Caiene was deserted where it stood and as the old light of day faded with the thick fog, the shuffle of weary feet was the last dying noise of the harsh winter’s day. A slow shuffle that began at the door of one of the many crushed houses and continued, moving slowly forward, to reach the courtyard of the city. Caiene’s court was one of great majesty, and the colours and lights produced in that one square of land had been unrivaled in any other city, this land or other. There the young girl stood amongst the ravaged bodies and teetering fires. She had hair the rich red of fine cherries and fresh blood; a face covered in the refuse of the war with dirt and ash mingling her small features. But even she, she who stood silent in her watching, sighed bitterly, before crumpling to the cold ground. As her eyes fluttered closed, the beginnings of the new winter snow swirled, and pure white flakes fell gracefully to land upon her visage, covering her slowly in a blanket of snow, as if the gods wished to keep her warm.

Amazing! Outstanding! I loved it! It was so detailed and perfect! I wish I could write like this! It should be longer though. Or more chapters. THis doesn't make much of a story. Although, it is a good start. You had my attention from the very first sentence. I loved it! Jamie Bondage

Very nice I like it, really draws you in with it's sudden outburst of violence followed by the aftermath of bleak imagery. The description of the battle itself seemed a little short, although I wonder whether this was intentional (the end of the battle?)
Ohhh And personifying the weather...love that stuff!

Great descriptions add to the foreboding atmopsheare in this beginning...yet you need to write more! More I tell you! XD

Really all I have to say is good, though there are a few things that can be added but not for lack of a great writer.

The Good Things:
- The detail was fantastic! I could actually picture it as if I was there! And the best part is that it flowed.
- It drew me in, and kept me captivated.
- You started with the action, not with talking about meaningless things (which many people tend to do -- including myslef) I think that is a good thing to be able to do.

The Bad Things:
- While the detail was great the information isn't. We know that there is a war, we know something about a girl. But where is this going?
- It's a bit to short for my liking. Unless it's supposed to be a prologue then it just needs a little more about the war or the girl. Other wise I think you could add another event or something just to make it a little more...
- It doesn't really have a point... or that's what it seems like at this point.

That's it really. I hope to read more soon!

ahah. Thankyou all for the commentation. It is, as always, very much appreciated. I hadn't thought to add to this at all, hehe, it was a spur of the moment thing that I wrote for my friends birthday a few weeks ago. (an odd prezzie i know)

Reading all of your comments makes me think that maybe I should add to this (as the lack of length seems to be rather noticable ;) ) Perhaps, as Stevie mentioned, this could be a sort of prolgue. *thinks* ehehe. I'm not too good with longer stories, but I might just give that a go.

Oh, Perikov; the shortness of the battle scene was intentional, as you said, it is the end of the battle.

Thankyou all once again. =D

*hearts* Le Penguin.
