make your characters WRITE !!

don’t know how to find the right voice for your characters? EASY ! just have them write letters to each other
here’s one of mine (posting it in several parts because of the img. limit)

all nine characters included are siblings (except for Valeyre) so thought I’d do some family banter ^^

I enjoyed the banter. And I agree, this is a great way to develop your characters’ voices. I do something similar, though a little differently. I often develop my characters’ voices and personalities before I even have a plot in mind.

I usually have a concept paper where I write down whatever thoughts I imagine my characters having, whether they pertain to a story or exist entirely independent of one. It lets me get a feel for who they are and how they think, which is particularly useful since most of my writing takes the form of first-person narratives. It’s what works for me; understanding how my character thinks helps me discover what they have to say, and following, the story they have to tell.
