For the past few times I was trying to make an entire story, but found it didn't ever go as planned and I never worked on it so this time I've down scaled it to the story of one character in a co-written story already mostly laid out: Spades.

Summary: Spades goes through a journey of starting out as a farmer of lives in a corrupt society, to a starving king on the streets, a bounty hunter, a gangster/trafficker, a traitor, a jack of all trades around the galaxy, bigfoot in the woods, to a mentor and a leader.

What I would like to work on:
- Fleshing out his backstory
- Really getting to know him intimately, being able to write him fluidly
- Dive into the muck of character development

- more description with less repetitiveness in word choice
- more character thoughts to create a better balance between thoughts and descriptions of action or scenery

- research more into certain fighting styles and their vocabulary

- Commenting on and following the awesome writing of others!

Ohh, this looks really interesting! Looks like a great list of goals, and I like the title. That's a lot of arcs for one character! It sounds like a big story for Spades.

Do you have any big character development questions you'll be tackling?

@soundofmind Thank you! There's definitely a lot of changes in his life, yes, but not so many great, huge character arcs. There's maybe 3-5.

I'm really working to figure out his mindset and what alters it throughout his life. What he fears, how far deep his regrets go, what makes him seem so resilient to succumbing to his regrets (to not dwell on them as many other characters in the full story do). Also figuring out why he fully merged with the squad he trained to fight his former boss, becoming the guy in charge instead of just using them to eliminate the threat and live on with life.

Woah, Spades sounds like a layered character with quite a few challenges ahead. With the way his roles shift throughout the story, I’m especially interested to see how it all unfolds!

I definitely haven't been pulled away from working this already. I've got days worth of progress, just look!

Day 1
Summary: Explaining the job Spades started out with.
Word Count: 293
Spoiler
A spark farmer, or a farmer of life, is as the name says: they take care of the raw lives growing in their fields. The lives themselves are orb-shaped and look similar to a ball of energy. The ground which they grow in are made of a different material than the rest of the planet, naturally designed to host and grow the lives. While the lives can grow on their own (the same as any plant on earth), the farmers job is to increase life production rather than the lives fizzling out due to being unable to form completely.
Spark farmers, most likely due to the exposure of the raw energy of the unborn lives, adapted and gained a special ability: being able to "read" the lives. They could make out genetic traits just by feeling (physical traits, personality traits, etc). This included mental and physical disorders.
However, the physical demands are a lot on the farmers. They haul supplies and tools, bend down, kneel, and get back up over and over from before dawn to after dusk.
In the recent decades the senate has excersized their powers over the world. This included the farms. They put restrictions upon the lives which were allowed to form: they couldn't form too slowly, they had to be helpful to society and not potentially harm it, they couldn't be malformed, and the list went on, and on. Lives not within those perameters were extracted from the ground and let to fizzle out.
In the beginning of the war, life went on for the farmers. But as the world became more polluted, supplies scarce, and eventually the fall of the senate, the fields wilted and farmers joined the call to arms for either side of the war.

Day 2 + 3
Summary: How it was relevant to Spades, the straight facts and a bit of how he felt.
Word Count: 444
Spoiler
Spades was very happy with his job, however physically, this was a very hard job on him, especially with his height. Nonetheless, it was one of his favorite jobs. If only it hadn't been so corrupted.
Joint mobility becomes a reoccuring problem down the line. He started it in the middle of the senate's eugenics, so he got rather accustomed to their way of doing things. It made sense to him. Weed out the bad so society can thrive and become better. He wanted to do good. He wanted to help make a difference in the world, and right there he could do it by filling society with lives genetically programmed to have qualities like being kind, helpful, hardworking, etc. No one wants to know they're responsible for knowingly unleashing a psychopath upon the world, especially in one that's already losing its stability due to political tensions between the lower and higher classes.
The one condition he was lenient on were those who were slow to form or struggled to, yet weren't mutated. The ones he couldn't help himself would be taken to workers who were specialized in making the right nudges to complete the process before the planetary substance which forms their bodies cools off. It's like baking bread: can't take too long, can't be too quick, can't be too hot, can't cool off too much.
As trait restrictions grew, particularly not allowing any traits which could be seen as arrogant such as being naturally good at leadership or outgoing, Spades started to question it. It was something which did not go over well with his superior, and left dark smudges in his otherwise clean record.
What pushed him to getting fired is when funds were cut from those specialized workers, and law enforcement was guarding the building as equipment were being hauled out to be stored and never touched again.
It was unbelievable, and he was rather indignant about it. There were lives that could be hardworking and good for society, they were only struggling to fully form and needed such specialized care. That was worth the funds, was it not? As young as he was, and without proper mentorship, he was easily baited into a fight by one of the law enforcers, put on trial, and given a short sentence in prison.
And none of his coworkers stood up with him like they had at first when the restrictions started to seem quite unreasonable. They had been afraid of losing their job like him, or having another mark in their records as committing misconduct. To this, he felt betrayed. Let down. They would rather stay silent and let good lives die.

Oh my that is so so cool, the spark farmer life!! The whole situation is so intriguing!

I'm looking forward to reading the story ^^
“Are you serious?”
“Completely.”
“You’re telling me that you'll get to sleep on a king-sized bed while we have to share a tiny room with two bunk beds.”
“I want to sleep on top!”
“Tommy, you’re not helping.”
