You don't fully know how you got here. It's 5 A.M., you're in a van, half of your... friend-colleauges are half asleep, and your driver is rambling to himself again. Typical Gary. It's been a couple of months since you've landed this job and it's been... strange, to say the least.
To get the whole picture, you'd have to rewind to September. You were pretty down on your luck. Got fired from the last job you had because you didn't "align with the company's vision" or whatever. While searching for a new one, you came across one that was... peculiar, to say the least. It sure beat having to flip burgers or do... retail.
Looking for UNIQUE hires, willing to go out into the field, but also do paperwork and other such mundane things.
Put literally anything you think could give you an edge in your resumé. Juggling, bowling, balancing pencils. Anything.
Negotiable pay at a baseline of 75/hr, but it is expected to come into work when called. At anytime. Which means ANYTIME.
- Arena Inc.
Now that was a job you could probably get behind. You submitted your resumé, and you could have sworn not even a minute later, you recieved an email back, telling you that they'd like to interview you.
One awkward "How do you think you can make an impact on Arena?" later, you got called back into the interview room after waiting what felt like an eternity in the waiting room.
Why even have a waiting room? This all felt more like an audition of some sorts-- having to pour your heart out to an interviewer for some stupid job. It was already time for dinner! But no, you had to keep focused. You needed this job.
After another eternity and a half waiting, re-interviewing, watching people leave, falling asleep, jolting awake to re-interview AGAIN, and so on, you were finally sent home.
By the time you hit the bed, you could barely keep your eyes open to check the time. 4 A.M. Which was also coincidentally the last thing you saw before you fell asleep.
Then, you woke up to the sound of your phone ringing. The interviewer! You sprung up and picked up the call.
Hello, Patrick here, from Arena Inc. I'm happy to inform you that we have selected you, alongside 4 others, to join our company in your own department. Your first day is this upcoming Tuesday, beginning at 9 AM. Do not be tardy. Thanks!
You couldn't believe it. You got hired.
And the rest of it was a blur. Meeting new friends, your "comission-hunter" Gary, his AI assistant SARA... and going on jobs.
That was something you weren't prepared for. The jobs. Patrick (who you now know is the Chief Executive of Initiation and Workplace Balance, whatever that means) outlined that you six (or seven, if you counted SARA,) were part of Arena's Reclaim, Reposess, and Rennovate intiative. Something something something to aid those in need. You weren't really paying attention.
They started out easy. "Go clean out this shack!" and "Go to this company and clean out their meeting room!". But then they got weird. Things started moving, people fell through previously sturdy floors, and you couldn't quite shake the feeling something sinister was happening.
You could swear that every "easy" job was getting more and more dangerous. Something was definitely wrong. Or maybe it was that water that you had from the cooler in the offices. Regardless, it was weird that chandeliers, walls, paintings... vases... literally everything, was falling in spots that would be almost lethal.
But you shook it off. It was probably nothing. Probably. Plus, nothing could go wrong this time. Hopefully. Probably. Maybe.
