you know what...Julia would be 29 in the last SB iirc if not then she'd be younger than 14 and that screws up any chance of her being able to think a little more logically and she wouldnt have been able to still be able to watch over her little brother effectively sooooooo. With having been a part of the previous SB I can tell you that you will be fine. Many of the characters in the other story are not going to be referenced in this one. SO you will be fine.
Yeah no it has no references to the first one at all. Pretty sure everyone participating in this one that were also in the first one are making new characters as well.
