I just did this essay for school awhile ago. I was gonna post it sooner but I couldn't because of my stupid teacher  Anways here it is so tell me what you think of it. I know about the grammar mistakes with the commas and stuff but I'm just to lazy to fix it

Mrs. Brown waved as her ten year old daughter Cassie skipped happily off to school. After Cassie was out of sight she started to get ready for work. As Mrs. Brown walked into the kitchen she studied the picture that her daughter had brought home from school yesterday. It was of Cassie, her, and her husband on their summer vacation. Smiling she got her briefcase together and headed off to work. It was about 2:25pm when she got a phone call.

“Hello” she answered in her business voice.

“Hello is this Mrs. Brown?”

“Yes” she replied

“This is Officer Carlton and you need to come down to the station immediately it involves your daughter.”

“Okay” Mrs. Brown replied knowing something horrible was wrong. As she drove quickly down to the police station she saw her husband’s vehicle already there. Hurrying into the station she was met by her husband and Officer Carlton. Her husband was looking very pale, and the officer had a grim look on his face.

“Why don’t we talk in my office” he suggested. They both nodded and followed him into his office. Mrs. Brown was almost sick with apprehension.

“We need you to see if you can identify a child we found dead today in a ravine. She is to beaten up to recognize so you have to see if you can find a familiar article of clothing or jewelry on her. From the evidence that we have gathered she never showed up to school today, but there is a possibility that it isn’t her.” Mrs. Brown was silent as she followed her husband and the officer into the lab as horrible as it sounded to her she hoped it was someone else and not her lovely daughter who still had her whole life in front of her. As they entered the lab she let out a strangled sob as she saw the body. Swallowing grimly and walking towards it she almost screamed with anguish. The clothing was ripped and tattered; it was the outfit that she was so proud to have chosen out herself. Any skin that was showing was beaten black and blue and swollen beyond belief. There were long gashes with dried blood caked on them which covered her face, legs and arms. Her hair had been torn out in chunks in places. She recognized the pair of gold teddy bear earrings. They were Cassie’s. She had gotten them for her birthday from her grandma and she had been so proud of them. Silently tears streamed down her face.

“Is it her?” the officer asked quietly. She nodded and turned away from her silent, still, young daughter.

This is why many people believe that capital punishment should be brought back. Although this story is not true it does reflect what happens when people have their family members brutally murdered and taken from them. People are killed with their families left behind grieving for them. They are killed for the sick pleasure of the murderers. Many more people are affected by the murder than just the victim themselves. That is why murderers should be executed, so they don’t inflict any more pain and harm upon other victims and their families.

A reason for capital punishment is that it is a deterrent. It has been said that capital punishment does not act as a deterrent, but that is wrong. It is wrong because if the murderer is executed then they will definitely not be killing anybody more. Also, according to studies, one execution of a convicted murderer deters about 156 potential murderers. Abolitionists have said that areas with capital punishment have higher crime rates than those without. However, states that do have capital punishment are usually much more highly populated than those without, which are mostly rural. The population differences between the states would definitely suggest that states with a higher population level would have a higher crime level than less populated areas. An example that capital punishment does indeed deter crime levels is that in 1960 there were 56 executions and 9 140 murders, in 1964 there was only 15 executions and there were

9 250, by 1969 there were no executions and the murders were at a whopping 14 590. After about six more years the murders had risen to 20 510. This information show that, as the execution number decreased the murder number had skyrocketed. Another example of how capital punishment does deter murderers takes place in the mid 1800's in India. There was a gang of murderer/thieves called the Thuggees. The gang's existence dated back to the 1550's. The Thuggee's can be given credit to over two million murders which consisted of mostly wealthy travelers. The members of the gang would disguise themselves as beggars or religious leaders to kill their victims. As a rule of the cult they were not allowed to spill blood so they would strangle their victims. Another rule of the cult was that they had to kill at least one person a year to remain a member. They killed their victims as human sacrifices to their goddess of destruction, Kali. The British government worked very hard to eliminate this destructive cult, so between 1829 and 1848 they managed to suppress them by mass arrests and speedy executions. This accomplished no recitivism and it discouraged people from joining the cult. Another example of how capital punishment could have deterred a murderer Robert Massie. In 1965 Massie murdered the mother of two; Mildred Weiss who lived in California. A few hours before his scheduled execution, he testified against his accomplice and his sentence was changed to life when. Robert Massie received an undeserved second chance and was paroled. Eight months later he murdered and robbed businessman Boris Naumoff in San Francisco. These are reasons and examples as why capital punishment could act as a deterrent and should be brought back.

A second reason for capital punishment is that it prevents recitivism since the murderer is executed, and can’t kill anymore. Between 1976 and 2000 11.4% (58, 409 people), of the murders in the United States were committee by inmates, serving their sentences, who already had a murder charge, this is a fact that shows capital punishment could stop recitivism. Another fact is that 76% to 98.4% of cop killers have already had a previous murder charge. Joe Atkins is a criminal who is guilty of recitivism. Atkins shot 13 year old Karen Patterson to death while she was sleeping. Atkins then cut the phone lines on the Patterson home. When Karen’s parents arrived home he chased them out of the house wielding a machete, a sawed off shotgun and a pistol. Karen’s mother then ran to Atkins’ home where his adopted father, Benjamin Atkins, 75, lived, who had persuaded the courts for Joe Atkins’ parole. Joe Atkins then murdered his adopted father. He had spent only 10 years of a life sentence for murdering his brother before he was paroled. These are reasons and facts on why capital punishment should be brought back, because it could stop repeat offenses.

There are many reasons as why capital punishment is fair justice. There are many biblical verses that encourage it and enforce it. Such as Genesis 9:6 ‘whoever sheds the blood of a man, by man his blood shall be shed; for God made man in his own image. There is of course the sixth of the ten commandments which is ‘Thou shall not murder’. If you look murder up in the dictionary the definition is ‘the unlawful killing of one person by another especially with premeditated murder.’ Most protestant Christians say that the New Testament of the Bible is against capital punishment but according to different verses it isn’t. For example in the New Testament Revelation 13:9-10 says ‘He who has an ear, let him hear. If anyone is to go into captivity into captivity he shall go. If anyone kills with the sword, with the sword he shall be killed.’ Jesus also says in his sermon on the mount that he does not want to stop the law of the government and that it should be followed. An example of a person that should be executed is Clifford Olson. He murdered 10 Canadian children. Some of which he would sexually assault and then kill. Some of the children he would promise work and then murder them when they came to work. He was paid to reveal the location of the bodies of his victims. He is currently sentenced to life with no chance of parole, but there is always the chance that he could escape or laws could change and he would get out of jail because people can forget the past. This person and other people like him shouldn’t be allowed to get away with their lives after killing so many helpless children. Another example is Susan Smith who killed her two sons both under the age of eleven by driving the car they were in into a river, so that they would drown to death. When questioned, she said that she turned the lights on in the car so that she could watch it sink to the bottom of the river. She is currently on death row, but she hasn’t been executed yet. She is getting what she deserves and what Clifford Olson deserves also. According to, Numbers 35:31 ‘Do not accept ransom for the life of a murderer who deserves to die. He must surely be put to death.’ These are just a few examples why capital punishment is more than fair justice. Imagine the fear of the helpless children that Clifford Olson brutally murdered or how Susan Smith’s children must have cried for their mother while she watched them drown in the car she drove into the river. This is why capital punishment is fair justice.

These are some of the reasons why many people believe that capital punishment should be brought back to Canada. Think back to little Cassie Brown. She was a young innocent girl, who was murdered for no apparent reason. Although she is a fictional character Clifford Olson murdered young children like her. These are reasons why capital punishment should be brought back, so no more murderers ruin victim’s lives.

The punctuation thing definitely needs to be fixed. You said that you knew there were errors. There are LOTS of places where punctuation is needed, commas especially. If you fix it, people will be able to take this essay more seriously. Fixing the punctuation would help tremendously.

This is why many people believe that capital punishment should be brought back.

First of all, the story hasn't been separated from the essay portion appropriately. It would be wise to put it in italics or something. Secondly, what do you mean by "brought back"? The death penalty is legal in many states.

An example that capital punishment does indeed deter crime levels is that in 1960 there were 56 executions and 9 140 murders, in 1964 there was only 15 executions and there were

9 250, by 1969 there were no executions and the murders were at a whopping 14 590.

These need to be put together, and you need commas in some places. The punctuation thing really sticks out here, as well as in the story.

Now you are talking about it being brought back to Canada. Maybe you should narrow your topic a bit to just discuss the U.S. or Canada. It isn't wise to lump them together. Also, even though the Cassie Brown thing is a nice example, it would be really easy to find an article about a child who was murdered, and then you would have that reference, instead of pulling it out of your hat. Oh, and how can "murderers ruin victim's lives"? They murder, so the victims are dead. They may ruin the lives of the families of the victims, but the thing they ruin for the victims is a chance to live, not the life itself. Do you know what I mean?

Okay, here are some general points:
--punctuation needs to be added
--needs to be split into paragraphs according to content
--needs to be organized some more
--fiction story needs to be in italics, or replaced with a true story/article
--topic should be narrowed

I liked how you brought in the evidence from the Bible. Although its a bit jumbled, you have some really great evidence and points. I'm glad you wrote on this topic.

I have some suggestions that might help.

For most essays, we have this basic structure:

1. Thesis
2. Body (Includes points 1 through n.)
3. Conclusion.

Right now though, the essay looks cluttered. It has this shape.

1. Story.
2. Almost but not quite a thesis.
3. Body
4. Conclusion.

I suggest removing the story. It doesn't help your essay because the event is fictious. Real life events are often more gruesome and this helps your argument.

The first thing you need to do is to really make your thesis visible. The thesis might be something like:

"I believe that Capital Punishment should be brought back because it is an effective deterrent against crime, it prevents crime from being committed, and it is morally acceptable."

A thesis summarizes the points your essay will cover. If it helps, think of it as a shopping list. You have all the items you want to buy in the thesis statement. As you discuss the various points in more detail, you start crossing things off the list. When you get down to the conclusion, you check to see if you missed anything by writing a conclusion that says "this is what I set out to prove, this is the result."

In this case, we'll be hyper simple.

Thesis: Capital Punishment is Good.
Point 1: It deters crime.
Point 2: It prevents recitivism.
Point 3: Death is a fair punishment.
Conclusion: Capital Punishment is needed to prevent criminals from ruining the lives of innocent people.

This is our shopping list. I think that these points aren't clear. My suggestion is that you remove all the examples of the criminals and put it in a fourth point. My suggestion for the forth point is this:

Point 4: Capital Punishment is for the worst criminals.

This would be good for some of the stories that don't fit the outline.

In other stories, like the thugees, you should give a brief summary. So instead of:

"Another example of how capital punishment does deter murderers takes place in the mid 1800's in India. There was a gang of murderer/thieves called the Thuggees. The gang's existence dated back to the 1550's. The Thuggee's can be given credit to over two million murders which consisted of mostly wealthy travelers. The British government worked very hard to eliminate this destructive cult, so between 1829 and 1848 they managed to suppress them by mass arrests and speedy executions. This accomplished no recitivism and it discouraged people from joining the cult. "

You could simply say "The Thuggee Gang was a cult in India that committed religious murders between 1550 and 1850. The British managed to deter new members by making mass arrests and speedy executions of the cult members.

You did a large amount of research, which is very good. It means you know what you're talking about.

Remember that the essay is on Capital Punishment, not merely the people it's used on. To keep the research, I suggest referring the reader to an Appendix where all the research is. Something like (For more information, see Apendix A.) So you can have all your criminals in Appendix A, all your crime statistics in Appendix B, and so on and so forth.

I hope this helps.
