Angel
He woke up feeling sick, and jumped out of bed as he noticed a body next to him. Regretting that move as his head threatened to explode, Angel recalled - the drinking, the talking, Mark, gun, demons, Nieeve.. Violeta. He closed his eyes.
"Fuck," he muttered, quiet enough so Mark can't hear - though he was as good as dead when asleep, especially after the night such as last - and left the room, not bothering to find a shirt that would go with pants.
He gently knocked on Violeta's door, realizing it's already almost noon.
"Vi?" He called softly, getting no response. "Violeta, open the door."
"Go away!" He hear her voice, muffled as if she had her face stuck in the pillow. He frowned, ready to yell, and remembered what he did. Suck it up, he told to himself, and act nicely today. He tried pushing the door and figured they were locked.
"Violeta, love, let me in." Right now.
"I said, go away!" She yelled this time, and there was a soft bump as something hit the door from the other side. Angel fisted his hands.
"Open. The bloody. Door. Now."
No voice came back in answer, so he turned, walked to his coat and pulled out a gun, shooting at the lock of Violeta's room. He regretted that decision as well, pretty sure he can't have a worse headache than he had that moment.
She laid on her bed, under blankets, curled and covering her ears, and almost desperately pulled herself away as he sat on the bed. He put his hand on the other side of her, stopping her from moving, and she inhaled a trebling breath.
"Please, go, Angel," she said silently. "I can't talk to you now, I need my time alone."
He hated that tone - better said, he hated himself for making her use it.
"I won't hurt you," he said, leaving his hand hovering over her hair and not really daring to touch her. He never hurt her physically like that before. He made her cry, mad, desperate, suicidal, homicidal, but never this afraid of him and in physical pain.
"I thought so yesterday too," she whispered, closing her eyes as he finally decided to stroke her hair. "I can't take it anymore, Angel. I love you, but I can't. I'll leave today."
He squeezed the sheets with his right hand, but left stayed calm on Violeta's head. She never before told him that that directly. She was sad and he knew she hated him sometimes, but she never before said she wanted to break up.
"No," he said slowly, doing his best to not sound like giving an order. "You will not leave. If you really want it, I will. But you will never see me like this, then. If I leave now, next time we meet one of us will kill the other. And I'm not going to be the one to hesitate."
He left her with those words, and he was pretty sure she cried. He didn't really want to leave. He liked the old opera house they lived in, even though it wasn't very taken care of and he could easily imagine it being jointed by a ghost of some dead actor who's body still laid somewhere in the house, and he loved her when he was able to. No.. He loved her even when he was as he was last night, but it was somewhat different kind of love. He needed her. He needed her to react to what he does, to fear when he wants her to be afraid, to cry when he wants to see her tears, to scream his name when he wants to hear it - and to forgive him. She'd always forgive him.
Mark entered the living room as Angel made himself coffee, and grabbed a bottle of rum. Frowning, Angel took it from his hand as Mark sat down, pouring a little in his coffee.
"Try eating something first," he muttered, and Mark arched his eyebrow.
"What's with the attitude?"
Angel met his eyes.
"What's up with the attitude? You got me drunk, again-"
"The cognac was yours, though."
"... and I woke up next you, again, and my girlfriend hates me. Also, touch her again and I will kill you before you get time to say that rune of yours. And for heaven's sake, I won't let you drink all of the alcohol in my house."
Mark seemed to be struggling not to laugh out loud, giggling at Angel's expression.
"But.. You got the alcohol out in the first place."
"It's called welcoming an old friend," Angel replied. And that's not the point. And if you're to stay here, I won't let you get drunk all the time."
"Let's take it one step at the time. I'll gladly stay here. The alcohol isn’t a necessity, don’t fret." Mark slapped Angel on the rump and walked out into the kitchen.
Angel left to his room, smiling for himself. I might as well act like leaving. I might as well leave for real. What's taking her so long, she should have been crying and begging me to stay by now.
He pulled out a random suit out of his closet, jumping of surprise as she hugged him from behind. He checked her hands on his chest, just to make sure it is really her.
"What do you want?" He muttered. Go ahead, tell me it was you who was wrong.
She rested her head on his back, and he could feel her still having temperature.
"I don't want you to leave," she said silently. "I don't want to fight you."
Good enough. He turned, and her hands slid to his chest.
"You should go back to bed and eat something."
"I'm not hungry," she said, and he frowned.
"You're a Vanquisher. If you go out weak or I'll, you're history. A man can make only one deal with the devil, you know, I can't protect you from everything."
She kissed him, taking him by surprise - he was normally the one to decide when it's time for kissing, or anything else for that matter. Her lips seemed to be burning against his, and he was pretty sure she wasn't quite aware of everything around her. Well, he said to himself, where's the surprise in that? Burning a letter of the lover's name in her skin tends to make a girl not feel well.
He moved her shirt up, and she pulled away from the kiss, holding his hand.
"Don't," she said, and his eyebrows furred. He ignored her plead, and controlled himself so he wouldn't smile. Truth be told, the A was written in a nice, styled way, surprisingly precise. He moved his finger over it, as she buried her nails in his chest, probably not daring to tell him to stop directly.
"Does it hurt?" He asked, and she shook her head.
"Not so much," she lied. He had to smile a little this time. He knew it hurt - it was made to hurt. But he was also fine with her playing strong for him.
"Good, then," he said, and kissed her forehead. "You go and rest now. I'll stay home today if you wish."
Her lips curled up in a smile.
"I can defend myself, sir," she said. "Besides, doesn't your friend want to spend time with you?" Her tone was bitter.
"He's name is Mark. And I would want you to think of him as friend as well."
"Angel, he-"
"Violeta," his made sure to put a warning in his voice, "you should know that I'm taking care of you. You won't be hurt as long as I do." He traced his finger over the burned A again, his eyes locked on hers. "You're mine, my love."
