Cindy was never just average. She always wanted to excel, to do everything beyond what was required. Until one day, she decided that she didn’t want to be referred as the “goody- too- shoes.” Cindy wanted to be more than just good grades to everyone; she wanted to be something they’d remember.
It was Thursday and 14 year old Cindy Hale was walking down the halls of Sharman High School. The crowded hallways were abuzz with plans for the 3-day weekend, yet all Cindy thought she could hear were comments of “Oh, here comes little miss perfect,” or “Ha, she’s so odd and preppy.” It disgusted her. She hated not being able to stand out, to make an entrance, for people not to notice her. With her mom working two jobs and her dad always at the office, she was forced to spend hours alone, locked in her room. What was there to do when all you had was free time, she asked herself one day. The answer came almost immediately; homework. She spent countless hours poring over textbooks while other people texted and she checked and re-checked every problem she was assigned, while her friends checked who was posting what where. That was how she maintained her 4.0 grade point average, by not having a social life. But, Cindy wanted to be noticed more than ever, now that the end of 2nd quarter was nearing. She sat through all of her classes, thinking, and waiting for the final bell to ring. Then finally, it did. She usually walked home, but today she’d need the most alone time possible, so she walked towards her bus.
After she got home, Cindy Hale walked up to her plain, white walled bedroom and opened her closet. After she had pulled out her little piggy bank, she threw it to the floor. It shattered and money could be spotted through the shards of broken pig. She picked out all the money and counted it. 250 dollars in cash, which should be good for now, she thought. She put the money in a pink and green wallet and walked out the door. On her short walk to the mall, she thought about her appearance. Long, dark black hair to the middle of her back, straight, white teeth, tall, lithe body, sparkling blue eyes that glittered in the sun, then she thought about what she usually wears, light, slightly faded flare jeans, anything pink, light blue, green, or really any other light color. When she arrived at the mall, she went straight for a big store called Hot Topic. She walked in and was greeted by the sound of loud, in her case, obnoxious music. She groaned inwardly. How was she supposed to get in with the people who got the most attention if she couldn’t even talk about the stuff they liked with them! She made a mental note that she’d have to do some research and try new things. She picked out a few tee- shirts that looked somewhat odd, three pairs of skinny jeans, all black, and a pair of nerd glasses. Then, she went to the makeup section of the store and bought 2 eyeliner sticks, 3 dark shades of eye shadow, and mascara.
