Starcatchers (accepting)

I got this from the Starcatcher Series by Ridley Pearson and Dave Barry. I highly recommend this series. (its like a pre-quel to Peter Pan. eeep!)

The year is 1900. There are two secret groups in the world, one devoted to ridding the world of a substance that brings greed and evil to all who have it. The others aren't really a group. All of them have the substance and are want more. They will stab each other in the back for this substance. A very big batch of the Substance has just fallen to Earth.

The substance is called Starstuff. It is a golden powder that falls to Earth sometimes. It gives people wonderful, magical powers, before the power wears off and you need more. It makes you fly, but there is much more, once you learn to properly use it. With the proper practice, people can affect the emotions of others. Starstuff grants heightened senses; you can even think about how fast you're thinking about things. It gives all people a wonderful, warm feeling that leaves people giddy and giggly. But, almost every person in the world can be killed by too much of it. I cannot stress this enough, too much Starstuff will kill you. Most wars in history have been fought over Starstuff.

Starcatchers: This is the group dedicated to ridding the Earth of Starstuff, since they saw how it brings out the evil in people. They carry golden lockets filled with Starstuff to carry out their mission. Starcatchers can be anywhere from 12 years old to adults. All of them are perfectly trained to use Starstuff. They have allies in the Porpoises, animals like dolphins who also see the evil in Starstuff. Most are decendants of Starcatchers, as the group has been around for a thousand or more years.

The Others: The Others are evil, greedy, and coldblooded. They have been around longer than the Starcatchers. Some also wear the golden lockets. This group is responsible for much war in the world, because even family members will kill each other for a bit of Starstuff. They are sddicted to the power that Starstuff gives you, and they will stop at nothing for some.

More Notes On Starstuff This also affects animals. It turns horses into centuars, squids into sea serpents, fish into mermaids, and birds into what are commonly refered to as "fairies". Pure gold is the only thing that stops it glowing power. When Starcatchers return Starstuff to space, they wear suits of gold. The Return is in Stonehenge, and it can only happen during Lunar Eclipses. The Others know nothing of the return; they are too focused on finding more Starstuff. It can even make objects float.

This is what the lockets look like. Starcatchers only use them in emergencies. They normally hang on very long, thin chains, hidden underneath clothing.

Personality: Unlike the "Others" she can actually be nice, but if she gets angry then no one wants to get in her way.
Strengths/Weaknesses: Very smart and cunning her only weakness is her vanity, she is very vain of herself. If she's running after somebody, if she passes a mirror, she will stop and look in the mirror.
History: Abused as a child, evil is the only thing that Love has ever known. She accidentaly discovered starstuff in the forest behind her house, and was then asked to join the "Others".
Likes/Dislikes: she likes power, and people complimenting her. She hates ugly things (thats how vain she is)

Others/Starcatchers: Starcatcher Apprentice

Appearance: Nellie doesn’t wear fancy clothes like most of the Starcatchers do. She is poor, and wears rags in colors that used to be bright blue, but are now a dirty blue-ish gray. She makes them look good. He green eyes seem to glow in the dark, and she always keeps her hair down and brushed well. She is short and slight, almost malnourished looking, since she had to beg for food to survive. She is altogether a haunting child.

Personality: Nellie is a resourceful, bold, and independent girl. She is very street-smart, and has a huge adventurous streak. She takes what life gives her, and normally doesn’t have any regrets, because she knows that her life will be short. She likes to do anything that makes her forget her parents, since the memory is still fresh in her mind. She’s comfortable in any place where adults go to; taverns, ships, and every other kind of bad place. She is deeply devoted to ridding the Earth of Starstuff, and she is willing to let herself and other people die so that Returns can be made. The only thing she fears is the Others.

Strengths: She fights like a wild animal; kicking, scratching, biting. She is an expert at flying and uses Starstuff fairly easily. She keeps a small dagger strapped to the inside of her boot, and can use it, although she admittedly isn’t the best. She speaks Porpoise, although she’s a little rusty. She can read maps and never lets her locket go. Because she doesn’t care if she dies, she will go all out on fights.

Weaknesses: The one big problem with Nellie is that she is weak. Being poor has drained her of all strength, so although she goes all out on a fight, she often doesn’t do any damage. Her fearlessness is a big problem, because she doesn’t know when to stop and retreat. She gets distracted by her memories, and is plagued with horrible nightmares that wake her screaming and covered in cold sweat. Her skirts keep her from being able to run fast.

History: Nellie is a Starcatcher through birth, as most are. She was born to a middle-class family in the bad part of the Bronx in New York, and her father was often away on Starcatcher business, since he was one of the Senior Starcatchers. From the time she was five, Nellie has been training as a Starcatcher. Then, it happened. When she was eleven years old, her parents left her with an aunt in London so that they could go on a mission for the Starcatchers. Little did they know that Nellie hid in the backseat of their carriage. They were going to the Return at Stonehenge. There was a weak spot in their golden armor, and they died from Starstuff exposure before Nellie could save them. Nellie refused to live with her aunt, opting instead to be a beggar and part of a child pick-pocket ring on the streets. She never earned enough money to keep herself well-fed, but she found the other Starcatchers within a year, so now she travels with them, helping them with their mission.

Likes: Winning fights, having fun, living in the moment, Returning Starstuff, flying, the ocean, and oddly enough, she enjoys singing and dancing.

Dislikes: The Others, what Starstuff does to people, worry-warts, rain, loosing at anything, and when she messes up in talking Porpoise.

Other: She keeps a photo of her parents in the bottom of her boot, which she looks at constantly. Even though she has been in London for a while, she still has a trace of her Bronx accent. She is 13, so unless there are other 13-year-olds, she isn’t up for love.
