Why Do You Write Fantasy?

13 posts in this topic.

  1. So, are you ready?

Out of all the genres of fiction there are, why did you choose to write in the Fantasy genre? What attracted or inspired you to writing fantasy? Why do you continue to write in it and how have you grown as a writer while writing in this genre?

    Ready? Set? Go!
  2. I choose to write fantasy because I like to let myself go as far as ideas are concerned and to just explore whatever happens to pop into my brain.
  3. A lifelong facination with magic and myth brought me to fantasy. That, and I began writing with a friend and we were both total fantasy nuts, lol.

As for why I've stuck with it, I'm not sure. I still have my love of magic and seeing it everywhere. Not to mention, just about every idea I've had is fantasy! :P I just like the twist of the surreal that fantasy brings. When it comes to inspiration, I always wonder how history could be changed and fixed with fantasy, and I make my worlds from there.

I've never really tracked my growth while writing fantasy, really. Because I've written almost nothing but, it's very hard to track. I guess you could say magic went from being "perfect" to gritty. That could have been just me growing up, though.
  4. I write it because, there are no limits. I don't like to have boundaries when I write, if i do it just ruins it for me. When i was younger, way younger, i used to be one of those kids who played in imaginary worlds. Me and my two best friends would have adventures around our blocks and in our backyards, it was fun. Now I'm a little old to be doing it like that, but by writing i sort of still do, its a bit of keeping the old me alive, keeping me young.
  5. Because everything else is boring.
  6. I've tried a lot of stuff. I'm proud of a lot of what I did, but most of what I'm proudest of is some form of fantasy.
Anyway, with fantasy, while in the real world fiction, I have to do the extensive research on police, justice systems, etc. I can use what I know and twist it into a way I think is suitable. Since I'm writing a fantasy taking place in the real world (well, Midgard at least), I suppose I can do research and imagination, so its a win-win situation, really.
  7. 1. Because fantasy has no limits, of course :P I enjoy the freedom.
    2. Um, maybe because of all those Disney movies and asian shows I used to watch when I was a kid. Plus, I was always an imaginitive kid who did those adventure games with my sister/friends/etc.
    3. I still the freedom it provides. I've completed a novel and realized that while writing fantasy, there's a lot of things you need to describe and explain, but you can't info-dump on the readers. It also forced me to try/practice/experiment with other types of writing.
  8. Because there's less research needed. ;)
  9. Who wouldn't want to create their own world/universe, rules, creatures and wield magic? :P
  10. Mostly the same reasons as everybody else... I can't just make a load of stuff up in whatever I write and create my own world with its own rules. I like the idea of monsters and mythical creatures and I also have fun with trying to make mine a little more unique than others'.

    :)
  11. Because, you can create such fantastical worlds where not even the sky is the limit. :D

Currently I am working on a novel that is part Fantasy and Sci-Fi. It is told in the third person omniscient point of view from five teenagers. Three boys, and two girls. Four are troubled, one is even suicidal. The book begins with all five of them having the same mysterious dream. In it I include many, many animals, and strange imagery. At one point of the dream things drastically change. Upon waking up I tell the reader about them, and how tragic they are off in life. The book takes a huge twist at the end.

I have it on the advanced critiques section of here under the title Dawn of Misery. I know, it's a horrible title, but it is only a random name that I gave it to post it on here. After all how would, "Untitled" or "No title" sound? :P
  12. something strange made me addicted to fantasy I had a dream about a flying with dragons that would stop when i woke up and continue the next night so when i noticed what was happening I wrote what happened in each dream each morning until finally the dreams stopped and i found myself longing for more information about the creatures so i started to read books about dragons and then it started tobe that i didnt want to read anything unless it had a dragon in it and then i started to write down my findings and then i saw this website and knew that this was the place for me to start my career as an author
happy i found the young writers society
    -dragons
  13. I love fantasy for a couple reasons. A) like sic-fi it allows me to address real-world issues without using existent groups so I can avoid being offensive and still point out the problem. B) Fantasy has no bounds. I can do whatever I want however I want with my own world logic and physics and whatever else. Also I've just been raised on it, so...:D
