Section 1
C. Too much information is a no no!
You don’t always need to give out every little detail during dialogue, on the contrary hold some details back! Just let everything flow naturally. Remember also it’s always good to keep your readers in suspense, as part of the enjoyment of reading novels is putting the pieces together. Additionally, don’t forget to trust your readers, and remember that they do have the ability to read between the lines and remember the events from earlier on in the novel.
Just observe the use of dialogue when you’re reading novels and see how the writers push you to read between the lines of what’s actually being said. If you keep on giving constant reels of information through your dialogue, the speech will start to come across as unnatural and forced, as you’re forcing your characters to say something that they wouldn’t in a real life situation just because you want to key your readers in. And remember the unsaid stuff can be communicated through your characters’ reactions and emotions and even their body language. Your characters should never tell each other something they already know. Also, never make it evident that you’re giving the reader important information through speech, as it will defeat the objective of foreshadowing! Just let the story unfold naturally with natural speech that will fit your characters and the situation and should get the reader more involved in your story!
Discussion 3: What do you notice about dialogue during novels? Do you have any advice you can share on knowing how much information to include in dialogue? Give some examples!!
