What myths do you like?

  1. Icarus and Daedalus actually scared me when I was younger, as does Theseus and the Minotaur now. Oddly it didn't when I was nine and had to try to illustrate Theseus murdering the Minotaur, abandoning Ariadne, and then Aegeus' suicide. It's only now when I think about it that I realise it's actually a pretty depressing myth, and a lot more complicated than I thought, so it's now one of my favourites.

Also, anything involving Medea. I've only read a couple because they came up in class once or twice, but we thought we were wrong on a couple of occasions when we were translating her request to marry Jason. She's that... direct?

Narcissus and Echo, Persephone's abduction, Orpheus and Eurydice, and the Medusa myth, too. Not the part about Perseus slaying her, but the story of how she became Medusa in some of the later versions. She's essentially punished for being a victim of rape.

I think the myths just get better as I'm able to understand some more of the symbolism and undercurrents within them. Still, I love the romantic ones, even - especially - if they're tragic.
