What myths do you like?

33 posts in this topic.

  1. What are your favourite myths? And from what part of the world? If you can't pick just one, say the god/goddess you like to read about.

I like Krishna stories, one of the avatars of Vishnu in Indian myth. And Shiva stories.

The story of Ra getting his birthright from his uncle Set, Egyptian.

Most Native tales. I haven't read them in so long I've forgotten most.

Quaizichel is interesting to read about. But not much is available on him.(Mayan)

Jaguar is another good one. (Central/South America)

Those are some of mine, what are yours?
  2. House of Atreus
  3. Never heard of that one. What's the country/mythology?
  4. Norse mythology, dwarfs, elves etc. And their modern relatives.
  5. I like anything Greek and most of Egyptian. Norse is also top-ranked on the list. My favorite would have to be the story of the Minotaur (which is Greek). I like to read about Apollo (Greek) as well.
  6. The House of Atreus is a Classical Myth.

It starts with the story of Tantalus cutting up his son Pelops, cooking him, and serving him to the gods. The story goes on for about a hundred years and ends with our modern concept of trial by jury being formed. I could type the whole story, but it's veeeeeeeery long.
  7. ew
  8. But we did get trial by jury from it. The surprising thing about the myth is, I always thought Athena would be all pro-woman's rights, but at the end of House of Atreus she basically says women are worthless!
  9. Wow. Now I want to read that myth.

Did you know we get the term "Mentor" from Greek myth? There's a character in one of the poems named Mentor, and Athena takes his place to help the hero.

That's really, um, strange. I have the firm belief that Greek myths were written by noblemen, just to give them excuses to rule over certain people.
  10. My personal favorite myth is Eros and Psyche in Greek mythology but I like all Greek mythology. There's a Japanese myth I read a while back about the daughter of a god who falls in love with a farmer that I really liked but I can't remember what it was called.

The best nationality of mythology in my opinion is Irish.
  11. Irish mythology? I've never really heard of that besides leprechauns.
  12. Irish Mythology is sooooo cool! But technically it's Celtic Mythology. I guess you could say that some of their gods are copied off of the Roman gods. (And they used the same gods as the Greeks.)
But my favorite mythology stories are of Achilles (Did I spell it right?), Odysseus, The Trojan War, Medusa, and Helios and his son.
  13. Oooh, myth! I think my favorite has to be Pyramus and Thisbe -- the Romeo and Juliet story, only better.
  14. That reminds me of Pygmalion! That story is sort of good, but it's short.
  15. Norse gods are so cool.

Can anyone find results on how to glue yourself to the ceiling?
