What's Your Favorite Story?

4 posts in this topic.

  1. Post your favorite myth, legend, or story from Mythology!

This is a hard choice, I'm aware, but it's basically just to refresh people's memories (*cough* me *cough*) of different parts of mythology.

I was always a fan of Medusa and how Perseus defeated her. If anyone looked into Medusa's eyes, they would turn to stone, but Perseus was smart and used her reflection to locate her and destroy her. That's so cool. ^.^

  2. My favorite story is... probably... the Labyrinth.

King Minos on Crete got seven attractive Athenian boys and girls and then sacrificed them to the minotaur as revenge to Athens. The minotaur had the body of a man and the head of a bull. He ate anyone that got lost in his gigantic maze. The sacrifices happened every year and then one year the Athenian king's son Theseus decided to destroy the minotaur. His father said to leave with black sails on his ship but if he died his men would keep the sails black. Theseus headed off for Crete and finally found the labyrinth. King Minos's daughter told him how to navigate the maze. He should take a ball of string in and unwind it, when he is ready to leave he just follows the string back. Theseus takes her advice and enters the mighty maze. He slowly crept along the walls and poked his head around every corner so that the monster could not jump out and surprise him. All of a sudden the minotaur jumps out but Theseus weilds his sword and cuts off the bull-like head. He quickly follows the string back and gets onto his ship. He is so excited that he forgets to change the sails. His father was waiting for him on a high cliff looking out over the ocean. When he sees Theseus's black sails he leaps off of the cliff.

Don't you just love happy endings?
  3. Oh, mine is definently the story of how Osiris died in Egyptian Mythology. Don't know why, but I love it.

This is from memory and might not be accurate.

Osiris was married to his sister, Isis. He was the king of Egypt. His younger brother, Set, was jealous of his brothers rule and plotted to take control of the throne. Set had a beautiful coffin made to fit only Osiris, then planned an extravegant party and invited all the gods. Half-way through the party, Set pulled out the coffin and declared that whoever could fit inside could have it. Everyone tried, but failed to fit. When Osiris layed down in it, he smiled, since it was a perfect fit. "Look! I've won the coffin!" he declared. But before he could celebrate Set closed the lid, nailed it shut, sealed it, and threw him in the Nile. And so Osiris died. Set took control of the throne.

Isis looked far and wide for her departed husband. Eventually, after years of searching, she found his coffin in some rushes alongside the river. He was, of course, dead. Isis used magic to wake him up from the dead, and they set back to reclaim the throne of Egypt. They succeded.

Set, however, was not satisfied. In the middle of the night, he came up and cut his brother into fourteen pieces as he slept, then scattered his pieces all over Egypt. Isis again went to search for him, and after another few years, found the pieces and sewn them back together with magic. However, Osiris could not live again, so he went to rule the underworld.

I can't remember what happens to Set...
  4. Mine would be Hercules 10 labors, well more like 12. It brings in a lot of monsters and other mythical places. I love how much work he has to do then just gets shot down right after and is forced to do some more.
