How does one describe oneself?

2 posts in this topic.

  1. I'm a free thinking Pastafarian Pantheonist with a side of liberal
I am a Gothic Lolita and a Basket Case
    I'm a lesbian, a quadroon, a female, and a brunette.
I'm a writer (duh) and philosopher (else I wouldn't be here), a pianist, singer, and a dancer (when no one's looking of course).

There's a lot of different labels we place on ourselves and others. Do labels, like the ones I've listed, have a place in society, in that they help us find connections with people, or are they harmful in that they force us into certain constraining roles?

First, write down your labels in the same order that I did mine, that is:
    1) Label your religious/political/social beliefs- label your thoughts
    2) Label your stereotype, the general word that describes you and people like you- label your style
    3) Label the things you can't change about yourself- race, gender, sexuality etc- label your body
    4) Label the things that you love to do- your work and your hobbies- label your heart.

And then discuss the questions I've posted. I'm looking forward to seeing the answers.
  2. I'm non-religious-people depend on scriptures too much to tell them how to think, how too feel, and how to live. I'm a Liberal with some respect for some Marxist ideals. I'm a pacifist, a vege who'd love to be a vegan and a feminist! Feminism all the way!!

I'm a human and animal rights-ey sort of person, gay rights supporter...I have a song in my heart and want everyone to know!lol. That's my sterrotype I guess.

I'm Irish, female, as far as I know heterosexual but some people question it lol. I'm strawberry blonde and although I'm Caucasian I bear some of the distinctions of my Middle Eastern descendants.

I love to sing, dance, love life and all who make it better, I love Philosophy obviously. I care. Passionately. I care for everyone. I want help for homelessness, an end to homphobia and mass misogyny. I love drama and music and of course feminism.

I think that in many ways these labels do help at times. I moved to a new school in September and my activist views, love for life and feminism attracted many people who feel the same way.

However, I know what you mean when you talk about a negative reaction. When I say I'm a feminist, a vegetarian, much of the time people see me as an extremist, a man-hater. People often judge and fear what they don't understand.

Do you ever find that when you tell others you're a lesbian it yields negative results? A good friend of mine is a lesbian and although I don't know of any times when she's suffered abuse, she's definitely slightly insecure. A while ago she had some girl trouble and although I discussed it wth her she felt uncomfortable to discuss it with me.

Maybe although we hear claims that socuiety is so developped for modern times, it's not?

    Indigo.
