Has anybody else read any Enid Blyton stuff? I loved her and grew up reading the Famous Five stories. They're actually the books that really made me love reading. I hated the Secret Seven, though. I think I've also read random other books by her like some of the boarding house books, but the Famous Five was the big one for me.
What about you guys? Like her? Hate her? Never read her?

I'm sorry, but I have to be open with my views about this author. I too enjoyed her books as a young child, but as I grew a little older, and a little wiser- I realised that her jokes and concepts were more sinister than I first expected. She's degrading to women in her books- notice how the girls always make sure the boys have got their tea and generally laugh at the fun rather in take part in it, and note- however outdated the books may be, the starkly prominent racism that prevails.
I, as a western and aspiring female writer, certainly won't be using her as a role model. I believe there are many classic women writers who do women justice.
Just my two cents, this is my own opinion and not intended to offend anyone. -
Yeah, Eimear, I read in an interview somewhere that she would not let her daughters see their dad when they were growing up. (I don't know the ins and outs of this; it might have been warranted - he could have been violent/abusive) But I remember reading that interview and disliking her.
Saying that, I loved the famous five books. I loved George, she was great!
Chocoholic, did you ever watch the series or listen to the cassettes when you were younger? I liked it that much!
