High Crimes and Misdemeanors

  1. I was doing some world building on my modern Alt Earth setting. I haven't gotten very far yet, but I've decided that I want the Alt US to be a corporate republic.

Now, I'm very bad at the technical stuff like Politics and Economics, but I was curious how everyone else goes about designing their ConGovernments? Do you pick a "genre" first, so to speak? I know I do. Wikipedia has a great list of government types from Anarchism to Oligarchy. Or do you do it from scratch, coming up with something new and wild? How do you handle governments with non-human species?

    Curious.

  2. I'd advise you to look to the heirarchies of the animal world. teh systems by which wolves, horses, fish--all sorts of animals--govern themselves is plenty to start with, and I'm sure it will evolve, certainly, once you get started.

    Best of luck!

  3. I think it's tempting, especially when you are a fan of one of your own races, to create a very enlightened government for them to be part of, which detracts from your world in general. Democratic, socialist elves in a medieval setting? Not so much.

Because most of what I write it (oddly enough) roughly medieval in terms of setting I tend to go for monarchies, but throw something random in to keep things spicy. Whether its traditionalist/progressive factions, emphasis on divine right or historical revisionism, it's the spices that really characterise something as conceptually monolithic as a monarchy.

The two governments I've gone with for (vaguelly) human races that I find most interesting are a Magocracy, an empire run by a guild of wizards, and a technocracy of sorts, where an ancient computer system pulls all the strings and the illusion of human politics is to keep everyone in line.

Sorry if this didn't really address the original post but I do enjoy a ramble.

As the notifications drift in I stop and wonder. Why do they take so long? Do they have adventures we don't know about? I bet they do. When they come I will ask myself. What amazing adventure has this straggling notification been on? How far did it travel, and why didn't it take me?
