Historical Heroes

  1. Who is your historical hero and why? It can be an ancestor, a famous person....you name it. I'll start:

My hero is my grandpa, Nephi Mike Luker. He fought in the Korean war and in World War II the other night, I was watching Flyboys, and it reminded me about how stressful my grandpa said it was, and how he didn't want talk about it all that much, it was very painful to watch his friends go down. But, he was honored with medals, and he was proud he had done his duty, but sometimes he thought he should have gown down instead of his friends. He is my hero, because he fought heroically, and feared what he was doing, but knew it was the right thing
  2. Gandhi would have to be one of mine, although I have many. He was just so peaceful and intelligent. He's most definitely one of my role models.

    I recommend reading his autobiography.
  3. Here's three of mine!

Henry Courtenay, 1st Marquess of Exeter - Henry was King Henry VIII cousin back in the Tudors days. What makes me love Henry so much (and this is more of a history girl's crush than a heroic thing), is what he did for love. He was in love with Elizabeth Grey, whose father was a Viscount. Elizabeth was meant to marry Charles Brandon, but the pair loved each other so much that they defied her father and got married anyway. That's true love!!

Mary, Queen of Scots - a woman who was pushed into the middle of crisis from the moment she was born, and only wanted an identity and someone to love her properly. I think Mary was a brilliant, intelligent woman, and Elizabeth I knew and was threatened by that. Sure Mary made mistakes, as everyone does. But it didn't help that she had people pushing her to make those mistakes.

Harold Lowe, Fifth Officer on the Titanic - Okay, so this is another historical crush deeply embedded in my blood thanks to a certain Welshman's portrayl of him in the 1997 movie, but Harold Lowe was a hero. He did what no-one else dared to do on that fateful night in April - he went back to try and rescue people from the freezing cold Atlantic Ocean. He went back - the best thing anyone could have done that night, even if it was a fruitful search (I think, from memory, they only found 6 odd people and only 3 of them survived.

History's full of heroes though. You could go on and on, but like you said, there are ordinary people like grandparents and ancestors who did wonderful and amazing things that make them heroes.
  4. Robin Hood, Even though some think he didn't exist. Maybe not the world's version, but some have found proof. He was a brave outlaw, and I am proud to be named after him!!And plus he fought epic battles and had to survive in Sherwood Forest to keep himself alive. He had a huge oak I think or tree or something to give him shelter!!
  5. Nur Jahan. She was a Mughal emperor's wife (I forget which), and her husband was an AWFUL ruler. However, she used eunuchs to deliver messages to him during State Meetings, while she listened behind a screen. She basically ran the coutry herself.! And India flourished under her reign.
  6. Simo Häyhä.

What a piece of work is a man! How noble in reason, how infinite in faculty, in form and moving how express and admirable, in action how like an angel, in apprehension how like a god -- the beauty of the world, the paragon of animals!
