The Notholiri, The Soliri, and The Tefineri - The Meldrunians (The Pure Folk) - The People of Ilos Meldas

The Meldrunians, or the Pure Ones, are a hybrid Elf-Human race that has lived in near-total isoaltion for centuries. They are the descendants of Men that interminged with the Elf natives.
They are divided into three cultural groups called "Folks"-- the Notholiri, the Soliri, and the Tefineri. The Three Folks live on an island to the southeast of Asturia, keeping to themselves. Occasionally, a few stray Tefineri or a banished Pure One may be seen abroad.
Maps of Ilos Meldas can sometimes be found abroad, though it is impossible for humans to find it without a guide: ancient spells hide their home from Men, as they tend to be greedy and lust for power.
  2. Notholiri - Translation "Highest/Eldest Folk"
The Notholiri are widely regarded as the most civilized and most cultured of all of the Pure Ones. With their advanced logic skills and sense of philosophical thought, their writings on matters of the mind, heart, and soul are some of the most extensively detailed to be found in the world. The Notholiri are considered cold and smetimes cruel by outsiders, but they are as warm as the kindest Elves when they come to accept another.
The Notholiri tend to live in great cities of stone that tower high into the air. Spires are their architectual specialty, as was best expressed in their capital city of Alniriel.
They can occasionally be seen out at sea, just a few miles from the shores of their home, fishing and hosting small parties. A very cultured group, the Notholiri revere the god Klimoroth ("The Scribe") and the goddess Lunisia ("The Light") above all others. Among their own race, the Notholiri are the highest society.
Of the races, the Notholiri believe that the Pure Ones come behind the dragons and the phoenixes alone. Elves are merely longer-lived versions of themselves, and Men are but sad creatures with no purpose or soul. Every King and Queen of the Pure Ones has come from the Notholiri House of Fineleri. The current King is Rachiel. His wife, Eloriniel of Himreich, rules beside him.
The closest of the three Folks to the River, the Notholiri have a strong connection to Arcane Magic. Those born with magic are considered to be of "better stock," and are taught by the greatest Pure Ones that can be found.
  3. Soliri - Translation "Mountain/Middle Folk"
The Soliri are often compared to tall, beardless Dwarves as they are skilled metalworkers and miners. Spending a majority of their lives underground, the Soliri normally work in shifts to care for animals and tend to small farms. Meat makes up a majority of their diet. The Soliri work well with silver and gold, though gemstones tend to be their greatest servants. They would seek knowledge from their fellow smiths, the Dwarves, to share and exchange knowledge, but the Soliri do not enjoy traveling.
Very private and isolationist, it is uncommon but not unheard of for one that is not a Soliri to lay their eyes upon the works beneath the mountains. Beneath the ground, the Soliri have built an expansive system of tunnels to travel from city to city. A few Notholiri and Solori engineers dwell in these tunnels, enternally wondering if a device could be made to enhance travel beneath the ground.
Each Soliri state is headed by an elected Council, and these Councils answer to the King or Queen of the Notholiri. Like their Notholiri, the Soliri revere the dragons and phoenixes above all others, but they also place the Dwarf smiths above themselves, regarding their skill and knowledge of iron and steel equal to their own of silver and gold. The goddess Philisia ("The Flame") is the most prominent in Soliri culture.
The Soliri send those gifted with magic to their kin, the Notholiri, for training. Practitioners of spell casting are especially sought out, as magic can further speed along the forging and mining processes.
  4. Tefineri - Translation "Wandering/Nomadic/Lowest Folk"
The Tefineri tend to be about human hight and more "Mannish" in face. They are more welcoming than their kin, but they are also more shy. Hunters and gatherers, they dislike staying in one place for too long. They are much humbler than their kin as well, placing Elves, Dwarves, Men, dragons, phoenixes, Treants, gryphons, pixies, and fairies above themselves. The rest they see as equals at best, lesser beings at worst.
Occasionally seen abroad, the Tefineri tend to be merchants and wayfarers. Mentions of the Tefineri can be found as far away as the Northern Lake. They travel wherever and whenever they wish, using the stars as their only guides. A Clan tends to be tight-knit and close, though inter-Clan relationships can be strained by individual practices and beliefs. They are many important Houses among the Tefineri, including Linarfin, Colminador, and Nelordos. They worship the goddess Avrailonis ("The Traveler")
The Tefineri are split into seven individual Clans-- Anotamarie, Bliminesteri, Kilmenesteri, Telmenestori, Chrenestiferi, Lithrimenestori, and Yemenestoria. Every other fortnight, the leaders of each Clan gather to share news and ideas, as well as bring word from abroad. The Anotamarie are the Chief Clan, led by Estoliria of the House of Linarfin.
Magic among the Tefineri is much rarer than it is among their cultural counterparts. When magic does crop up in a family every few generations, it is rare for the magic practitioner to ever recieve any training, even by a fellow novice. To the Tefineri, magic causes laziness.
  5. Physical Attributes
    Notholiri:
The Notholiri tend to be tall, slim people with longer ears than their kin. Blonde, brown, silver, white, gold, and black hair are all common. Blue, green, gray, purple, and gold eyes are all possible colors.

    Soliri:
The Soliri tend to be just as tall as the Notholiri, though stockier. Red/ginger hair appears only among the Soliri, and it is as common as black and gray hair. Green, gray, and amber eyes are all common.

    Tefineri:
The Tefineri tend to be more human in appearance, apart from their ears and eyes. Eyes tend to be yellow, amber, blue, green, and gray.
  6. Who's Considered High End
Families important enough to be declared Houses tend to be more important, whether historically or in the modern day. Houses are created by the King or Queen and maintained by the descendants of the first Head of House, the position passing hereditarily over the centuries.

The current influential families are listed by their Folk.
-Fineleri of the Notholiri; Founded by Meldrun, the First King
-Halotamri of the Notholiri; Founded by Yvensson, a Healer
-Thoremi of the Soliri; Founded by Bunvomii the Smith
-Linarfin of the Tefineri; Founded by Sreeskam, the First Chieftain
  7. Fashion
    Notholiri:
The Notholiri prefer cotton and silk clothes, usually dyed with grays, whites, silvers, and similar colors. Some powder their faces to appear paler, and many dye their hair various shades of silver, gold, and brown.
    Soliri:
The Soliri tend to wear leather and metal garments, having a tendency to get dirty easily.
    Tefineri:
The Tefineri wear thick woolen tunics, crudely sewn together with strips of tougher plants.

    Family Structure
Familial roles tend to be gender neutral, and biased thoughts on basis of gender or sexuality are uncommon.

    Attitude Towards Age, Birth, Death
The Notholiri and the Tefineri are more concerned with ceremonies and ways of life than the Soliri. Birthdays tend to be celebrated, and the old are revered. The average lifespan of a Meldrunian is roughly 625 years (7500 moon cycles), and though they rarely admit it, the Meldrunians fear death.

    Education
The Notholiri tend to be more educated than the Soliri and Tefineri in terms of reading, writing, and arithmetic.

    Racial Rights
The rights of other races among the Folks vary, depending on the beliefs of the group they reside with. The Tefineri tend to be more accepting of the other races. The Soliri refuse to mingle with other races. The Notholiri are extremely wary and limit the rights of all other races, barring the dragons and the phoenixes.
  8. Punishment vs Rehabilitaion and Adherence
The Meldunians tend to prefer rehabilitaion to corporal punishment. Often, people are set to work for a set amount of time in addition to their usual job so as to tire them out. Repeated offences usually result in a lash or two until at last serial criminals are sent to Asturia to live out their lives as slaves. Laws are normally followed as a wel-built, well-organized military is used to keep the peace.

    Economics
The Meldrunian economy is backed by silver, gold, and precious gemstones. Golden and silver coins are created and redesigned every few years. Counterfeiting results in immediate deportation to Asturian slave markets. Important cities include Estelia (capital; under Notholiri control) and Weymak, a Soliri trading center at the foot of Mount Lirmoth.

State Dependency and Attitudes towards Work and Charity
Orphans and younger Meldrunians are cared for by the temples. Adults tend to live by "you work and you eat." The Notholiri tend to rend farmers, teachers, philosophers, shipbuilders, healers, and sodiers from their ranks. The Soliri primarily consist of herdmen, weavers, miners, smiths, and soldiers. The Tefineri tend to be healers, hunters, gatherers, herbsmen, and merchants.
  9. History
The Meldrunians believe that they were created by the god Thrith, who according to their religious texts "breathed life into us all, be we bird or beast or sentient being." When the gods went to war, Meldrun (translated as "Purest Heart") became their champion. When the war ended, most of the gods entered a death-like state called thryetana, literally "living death." According to their legends, the goddess Avrailonis came forward and organized the nine diverse groups (Folks) of the Meldrunians into the Three Folks. The only gods that did not enter this sleep were the Ordas (Neutral), Klimoroth, Lunisia, and Philisia. None of the Boronians (supporters of the uprising) remained awake.
Over the centuries since, the Meldrunians have deveoped three very different cultures and ways of life. The Notholiri took up residence in the forests, by the lakes and rivers, and in cities of white stone that rose from the ground. Some cities they built hidden in valleys or atop mountains. They gathered what knowledge they could from abroad and named Medrun their King, and he founded the line of Fineleri. It was to him all the Meldrunians were loyal. The Soliri took to the mountains and hills, burrowing deep down into the dark. They are the only Folk that chooses its leaders by "throwing stones," a simple voting system. The Tefineri took to the plains and occasionally can be seen travelling abroad, nomads first and foremost.
More recently, the Notholiri and Soliri have steadily become more and more isolationist while the Tefineri remain roughly where they were, albeit more shy and quiet. They take in more news than they give abroad, and the Tefineri are a reliable source of information at best, questionable source of information at worst. Foreign nations at least know of their existence, even if they do not know where the Meldrunians can be found. Occasionally, an exiled Pure One can be bought as a slave, and the gold and silver coins of their peoples are sometimes exchanged as money.

Religion does not influence the law or governments, but many superstitions and folktales have arisen surrounding the gods of the Meldrunians. One such tale claims that most of the gods and goddesses are sleeping, save for those the Folks hold in highest esteem and the Nangasaki. These "Waking Gods" will one day rouse the others from rest and bring peace, culture, and freedom to the world.
  11. Language
The term “Meldrunian” did not apply to all Pure Ones until the reign of Queen Almha, the great-great-great-granddaughter of King Meldrun. Previously, the term applied only to the Notholiri, but as Meldrunian translated to “Pure Ones, the three Folks adopted it as a universal term.
Most names and words tend to be emphasized by vowels, such as Meldrun (mehl-DRUNE) or Eloriniel (el-or-in-EE-el). These names seem to be “alive,” as notable Notholiri linguist Elbadr Neryatara wrote in her History of the Three Folks. "The language," she said, "appears to be a blend of Mannish languages and the Elvish, which has, over the centuries, developed its own forms and dialects relevant to the Folk that use them."

    Land
The Meldrunians live on an island southeast of Asturia. At the heart of the island, five mountains rise from the ground. These mountains are surrounded by the Faunidhidol, which are in turn surrounded by plains. Stone cities rise from the ground in the forest and on the plains, and a dozen port cities dot the coastline. On Ilos Meldras, there are rumors that Elves still dwell deep within the forests, ashamed of their relatives, but so far, these rumors have proven false. A phoenix is seen roughly once or twice a month, usually flying over the Soliri's mountains. The Tefineri bring an outsider or so with them from time to time, usually Dwarves that wish to see the Soliri, sometimes other non-humans seeking asylum.
  12. Note: Nangasaki and Ordas are interchangeable.
