A quick guide to cryptography

  1. As you may have already noticed, those involved in the Classified Crew are fond of using coded messages to communicate with one another. In our never-ending quest to find the truth, it is imperative that we learn the skills necessary to crack these codes, in order to better anticipate their movements. As it turns out, the internet can be a valuable tool when it comes to this sort of thing. Often, once you've figured out what code you're looking at, all it takes to crack it is a quick internet search. Below are some of Classified's most commonly used codes, and the websites used to crack them.

    Caesar Shift

    This Cipher works by changing each letter into one a certain number of spaces before or after it alphabetically. For example, shifting three letters back would produce a key that looks something like this:

    A->X
    B->Y
    C->Z
    D->A
    E->B
    F->C

    And so on.

    The shift could go any number of positions up and down the alphabet, making 25 possible variants. As such, the best method of cracking this particular cipher is to try every single combination. Of course, most people don't have the time to do that manually, especially when it may not even be the Caesar Shift cipher in the first place, so the next best thing is to have a computer do it. Simply go here paste the cipher into the box, and select "Test All Possible Shifts." Then, go through the list of all 25 outcomes and pick the one that isn't complete gibberish.

    ATBASH/Mirror Cipher

    This one is a little simpler. All it does is invert the order of the alphabet, to create a key that looks like this:

    A->Z
    B->Y
    C->X

    Z->A
    Y->B
    X->C

    Letters to Numbers

    This one is pretty much what it sounds like. Each letter is changed into a number corresponding to it's position in the alphabet, so that:

    1->A
    2->B
    3->C

    Binary

    For those that don't already know, binary is essentially the most basic form of computer code, made up of 1s and 0s. Incidentally, it can also be used to convey coded messages. For example,
