Mira's 100 Words Daily

17 posts in this topic.

  1. I've been falling behind majorly on writing and it's been a while since I posted a chapter last, so I figured I'd need to try something like this. :)

I'll just post bits of my novel as I write it, as well as some extra projects that I have ideas for. Maybe a new novella?

I won't be able to do much during weekends because I don't get internet, but I'll try my hardest. ^^
  2. Day 1

I did it! I finally did it! (:
I got 139 words into the 16th chapter of my novel and got through the part that kept getting me stuck.

    Spoiler
A guard appears from the side of the building and pats me down. His--her?--face is hidden behind a mirrored visor. I can only see a distorted vision of myself reflected back.

When he turns his head toward Kat, she scowls and pulls off her weapons belt and hands it to him, then reaches into her boots to draw out a long knife. As she bends, I get a glimpse of multiple piercings in her ears. They glitter in the dull light.

She reaches behind her back and unfastens a pistol from her holster and hands it over. I watch openmouthed as she reaches into her flaming hair to draw out a pair of unusually sharp sticks and tosses them at the guard's feet, then takes off the metal cuffs at her wrists and adds them to the growing pile.
  3. Day 2

Can't believe that I started this on a weekend XD. I usually don't get much Internet on Saturdays and Sundays so I don't expect this to last...

BUT I did it! and I'm this much closer to finishing chapter 17. The writing below isn't all that good, but I'll edit it later. :)
    This bit's from Kyre's POV:

    Spoiler
It isn’t long before I lose sight of Ashe and her captor altogether. And then I lose sight of the sun. The buildings loom over my head, blocking out the last rays of the sun, impossibly imposing given that I've been in this area before. Once.

My shin is aflame and my lungs burn, so I pause, breathing heavily to try and catch my breath. Leaning heavily on my left leg, I rummage through a pocket in my hoodie and pull out a small cube, about half the size of my fist. I zip the pocket shut and tap the side of it repeatedly, trying to turn it on, gritting my teeth in frustration.

Despite multiple tries, I haven't been able to fix that particular bug.

The cube's sides glow faintly and I release a breath.

"Display heat-seeking vision," I say, lowering my voice to the point it sounded quiet even to my ears. The cube shines brightly and I hurridly cover it with my sleeve, then tentatively move my hand when it dims. I hold the device at arm's length and move in a slow circle, carefully watching the six screens.

  4. Day 4
It was a bit harder to do today because of time, and I kinda got stuck halfway through and had to restart. But, I did it. :)

    Spoiler
The device shines a brilliant orange when I move it east, and a robotic voice intones monotonously, “2 heat sources found in 50-foot radius.” I wince and hastily shove it back into my pocket, walking quickly.
By now, night has fallen completely; even the stars seem to be fading. I swallow hard, feeling a lump in my throat. My hands ache to draw out the cube again, if only for its meager light, but I force them to stay at my sides. One step at a time, I walk for a painful twenty minutes. Every rustling leaf, every whistle of the wind, every creak of a branch startles me, and it takes everything I have not to break into a run.

  5. I just realized that I made a mistake above. That was day 3, not 4. :)
  6. I actually thought that I wouldn't be able to finish my goal yesterday, but I got onto my doc--I keep all my 100 words/day on a Google Doc that saves on Google Drive so I can work on it from any device--and wrote. And wrote. And wrote. I felt that 100 words felt a bit choppy, so I tried for a bit more. I also couldn't post this yesterday (wifi issues) so I'm doing it now.

    Here's the real Day 4:

    Spoiler
I hear a faint scrabbling and shudder hard, feeling the cool trickle of sweat from my temple. The logical part of my brain tells me that it’s just a small animal, probably a rat or a squirrel, but my overactive imagination drowns it out. I pause for a moment next to a tree, then, without thinking, wrap my hand around the closest branch, hauling myself up. My arms burn from exertion and are shaking by the time I sit up on the branch. The darkness presses up around me, suffocating me with its nearness. It seems so impossibly near, so solid, I almost give up right there. Hell, I want to. But then Ashe’s face flashes through my mind, a light in the dark, an everlasting flame, a piece of the sun, and warmth floods though me, pushing out the night.
I tap on my tracker to see my location―the locator works both ways, and I can basically see a map with my coordinates―and freeze.
    There’s no way.
    No. Way.
I hesitantly look up, apprehensive, and the sight below confirms my suspicions. I’m ten feet above the edge of Government Headquarters.
  7. 191 words for Day 4
I forgot to write that in. :)
  8. Day 5

So I couldn't find the time to post this yesterday because of a Social Studies test, but I got quite a bit of writing done. :)

    Also.
AHHHHHHHH I'M SO CLOSE TO FINISHING CHAPTER 17 THIS IS ACTUALLY WORKING!!!!!!!
    Spoiler
Ominous dark silver buildings glitter under synthetic light-orbs, their edges unnervingly sharp. Bright red dots--cameras, I realize--are spread systematicaly over nearly every surface, blinking at regular intervals, watching their designated areas ceaselessly. The ground here is hard concrete, with the occasional tree breaking the monotonousness.

Like the one I'm on right now.

I look around, trying to find a safe place to climb down, but can't see one where there isn't a dot. Except for the roof of the building closest to me. My eyes rapidly and repeatedly scan the area, but no, there's nothing. Nothing to stop me from jumping on and finding a way in. I peer closer, and can make out a small rectangle of metal with the clunky metallic security setup from a few years back. It's older technology, the kind I have a lot of experience with hacking.

It seems too good to be true.

I almost laugh at my situation. Here I am, sitting on a tree because one of my only friends got taken by a Government officer, trying to find a way to infilterate their headquarters to bring her back.

If I get caught, it's instant erasing for me. If I leave any traces, I'd have to leave the surface world and maybe even move underground.

  9. Day 6 (after a ridiculously long break)

I started writing again, now that the major Science Fair and Spring Festival deadlines have passed. It's surprisingly hard, which just goes to show that practice makes it easier. But then again, the main reason I even stopped writing was deadlines and a dead end in my plot. I'm trying to find a way around it, though. (:
    Spoiler
    Where... am I....?
Darkness covers my vision, but as much as I try to move my eyes, I can't. My eyelids feel numb. I can't feel anything.
The sound of my heart drowns out my hearing, steady and muffled, slow, too slow.
    Bump.
    Bump.
    Bump...
I drift back into consciousness at muffled sounds. "...the intruder should be... yes, I know, but... just a boy... huh? ...'who he is'? What do you..." A pause, then another voice starts, fading in and out with my heartbeat. "I'm telling you... he's different... we can use him..."
    Use... who?
A loud beep sounds, and the voices stop instantly.
Footsteps draw near; I can feel the vibrations from them through my body. I try again to move my fingers, my thumb, my wrist. But I can't even feel them.

  10. Day 7

The plot is thickening (somewhat). I just hope that anyone reading CD (Code: Delete) doesn't think this is the climax. That's gonna come way later. I'll also try to get some more writing in for today, maybe on my WFP. That's really fun to work on. Or maybe on Wavemaker because it's so soothing to see. I'll figure it out (even though I'm running on 4-5 hours of sleep bc school)
Yesterday's 100 words (March 1) because I didn't get around to posting them:
    Spoiler
Another beep. The footsteps get faster, until they seem to be running.
A strange tingling feeling spreads through my body, pins and needles jolting every nerve, ending at my eyes. Sparks fly though their backs, and pain floods and pulses through my head, at once sharp and dull.
    "Aaaghhn..."
My mouth twists into a grimace and I immediately regret it as the taste of iron fills my mouth, accompanied by a stinging burn in my lips. The footsteps slow to a stop, and I can make out an outline of a hand through the tears in my eyes.
A loud click sounds, followed immediately by a hard tapping sound. I crack open my eyes, gritting my teeth against the blinding whiteness that surrounds me. One figure leans above me, silhouetted by the harsh white light above and blurred by my tears. The other is nowhere to be seen; perhaps she moved to the far end.

  11. Day 8 - Mar 5 2020 (posting this a day late bc internet issues)
I decided to get my sh*t together yesterday and write, and lo and behold, it actually worked! I went way over on the word count, but that's because I want to post a chapter before leaving for Cali.

    Spoiler
I sense a hand coming closer, fingers smudged together by my teary eyes. It hovers over my face for a second, then comes closer. A thumb carefully brushes my tears away, and the face above comes into focus.
The boy above has sharp, narrow features, with a straight, angular nose and high cheekbones. His head is almost shaved on one side, a thin layer of blond barely visible, but on the other side, his hair hangs long and straight, falling over his left ear and parts of his face. A healing gash peeks out from under his hair, a slash of pink that stands out against his skin.
He slips his hands under my head and shoulders and tugs me into a seated position. I’m in a tank filled with a thick, glowing substance, and once my arms are free of it, the feeling starts coming back to them in faster, more painful spurts of pins and needles. I pull them to my chest, curling my back over them, like that’ll make the prickling sensation disappear.
The boy still doesn’t say anything, he just takes my right hand into his and inspects it, then places it on my knee and gets up. He’s back a moment later with wipes, a solvent of sorts, and bandages. His own hands are bony and scrawny, but gentle as they cradle mine.
The solvent is green in color and feels like it’s freezing the skin, the tendons, and maybe even the bone of my hand where he applies it. My skin there goes from brown to a strange pink-green shade.
He seems focused on meticulously wrapping the bandage around my hand, so I take a moment to really observe him.
An oversized, worn shirt hangs over his thin body, and his cheekbones, jaw, and collarbones seem just a little too pronounced, like he isn’t getting enough to eat. He has a laneyard around his neck, the shiny plastic ID card hanging from it seeming ridiculously out of place. Despite his smaller stature―he can’t be much taller than me―something about him makes him seem older, perhaps eighteen or so. On his right hand, a silver band encircles his index finger.
He must have noticed me studying him, because he looks up and meets my eyes.
“All done for now. Don’t use your hand for the next two weeks, and you should be fine.” His voice is low, soft almost to the point of whispering. “And Ashe, please don’t tell anyone I was here.”
How do you know my name? I try to say, but my throat feels as though something hard is lodged inside it. Swallowing hard, I find my voice again, then something entirely different comes out. “Why? You didn’t do much―”
His hand is on my mouth. Heat radiates off of him, making me realize just how cold this room is. He shakes his head closes his eyes for a second, looking like he’s having an internal fight. Without moving his hand, he speaks again, this time so much quieter that I have to strain to hear him even though we’re sitting so close.
“I’m not supposed to be here. I’ll try to find you again soon, but you absolutely cannot tell anyone I was here unless you want us both to be erased.”
I nod, and he takes his hand off. “What’s your name?” I whisper.
He leans over and whispers it into my ear. “
    And then, he’s gone.

And yeah, I know. The boy doesn't have a name. I'll try to figure one out today.
  12. Day 9 (again from yesterday)

This is a bit from Kyre's POV, which I thought would be a nice way to finish chapter 18 because just Ashe's POV wasn't enough. I'll go through this later today and get the chapter out.
    Spoiler

    Fuck, it hurts like hell.
I curl into myself, trying to get away from the dizzying, throbbing pain that's racking my nose and head. Stinging tears push out of my eyelids, and I can't even wipe them off. My nose feels stuffed up and just wrong, and my head is filled with fog.
A click sounds as someone closes the door behind them, footsteps getting louder as they come closer. A hand jerks my face up, sending another wave of pain through my nose.
Kat's face peers at me, expressionless and hard.
"You," I rasp, hating the pathetic weakness in my voice. "What did you do to her?"
    "Your girlfriend? She's gone."
    Gone how?
My face must have betrayed what I'm thinking, because Kat smiles, saying the words with obvious pleasure.
"Imprisoned. Considered to be dead. To be erased soon."
My breath halts. My thoughts freeze over, hanging onto one word. No. No, no, no. Nononononono
Her fingers gently brush through my hair, and then I feel a sharp sting just under my ear.
"Rest well, dear. You'll be next, I'm sure."
Darkness closes around my vision again, this time soft and welcoming, not at all like the angry spots from earlier. The last thing I see before it takes over is Kat's retreating back as she leaves the room.
    I hate her so much.

  14. Day 10 - Mar 10 2020

Forgot to post this bc sudden wifi shutdown. here it is. new chs are surprisingly difficult to start sometimes. i hope this works out okay. :)

    Spoiler
Violet eyes rimmed in charcoal liner stare at me, their intensity unhindered by the amount of shadow painted around them. They hold hatred and anger, ice and fire at odds with each other. Black surrounds the eyes and I, a darkness so deep and whole it constricts me. A voice resounds around us, deep and unfaltering,
    "Gone."
    "Gone."
    "Gone."
My head pounds with it, the word latching onto it with parasitic persistance.
    gonegonegonegonegonegonegone--
"This him?" The voice is unfamiliar, but the one that follows definitely isn't.
"Kyre. Kyre. Kyrekyrekyre. C'mon, please, just wake up. Kyre!"
Warm hands cup my face and shake it, and I crack my eyes open blearily. Ashe's face stares back, eyes wide with worry.

  15. Day 1 - August 8 2020

Yeah, I figured it was time for a fresh start. This thing is supposed to be about streaks, not how many days a year I write. So I just reset it.

    Here it is:

    Spoiler
    Callan's POV

I crouch behind the desk, breathing shallowly to avoid making noise. The presence I sensed before comes closer, and soon enough, I hear footsteps. The door emits a small beep and slides open, and a woman comes in.

Her heels clack over the smooth floor as she walks over to the desk I'm behind.

Please don't look over, please don't look over, please don't...

Her shadow falls over my feet from under the desk and my breath gets stuck in my throat. I hold it there, not daring to make a single sound, a single movement that can give me away. She stays there for a few moments, probably checking on the info other nurses have recorded about Ashe.

And then, she turns away and makes her way over to the tank where Ashe is lying, pretending to be asleep.
