  1. The Bartender

"Howdy, pardner!" a man says, greeting you with a wave. His hair is black and slicked back tight against his skull. He looks like he might be Italian, but his skin and his voice are as rough and raw as any old Texan. "This here saloon was built for the pleasure of wandering western characters," he says. "Introduce yourself. Play a game of cards. Ask each other questions 'bout your story. Git yourself in a duel. I don't care much what you do, but don't get me involved in no bloodshed. I won't tolerate it.

"One final note, misters and misses: this here is a young writers town - no spirits sold! Just water from yonder well and sweet cactus juice. No guarantee you won't get the cholera."

  2. Derrick Marr

Withdrawn to a corner by the window lounges a man absorbed in his book. It appears to be a Jules Verne novel.

The man looks as if he had just hopped of his horse after a long journey; his clothes, completely black except for the white bandana tied around his neck, are draped in a generous film of dust. He picks up his shot of cactus juice and for the second he tips his chin up to drink, the light catches the deep shadows of his face and the scruffy black shadow of a beard. He looks eerily familiar.

    From a wanted poster, perhaps?
  3. Mary Jenkins

A girl walks in, wearing a typical threadbare farm dress. Her black hat is tipped a bit, an Indian band wrapped around it. She walks over, her hand swinging by her gun. "Howdy." She sits on the bar stool. "What poison ya got here?" She refers to the many different drinks lining the wall.
  4. Drew Chandler

A lanky, sandy haired kid who looks around sixteen cautiously steps inside. He looks around, before going to sit in a chair in the corner. He pulls his hat down over his eyes and glances warily, apparently wanting to keep a low profile.
  5. The Bartender

He cocks his eyebrows, regarding Mary with surprise. "Well aren't you the confident one," he says. He reaches under the counter, his eyes still locked on her in a most perplex manner, and pounds two kegs of liquid onto the weathered wood. "Pick your poison, Miss. The murky cholera water or the sweet-as-honey cactus juice."

He waits for her to pick the latter. He has no reason to think that the well water actually gives cholera, but he always says so so that his customers will buy the more pricey item.

    Derrick Marr

He notices the boy come in and, much like himself, pick a corner by himself. Deciding he's had enough of Captain Nemo, Dirk pockets his his book, leaves his empty shot glass on the counter next to the bartender and a girl, and walks over to the boy.

Why? The boy reminds him of himself, that's why.
  6. Mary Jenkins

She smiles, and replies. "Sweet as honey Cactus Juice." She looks over at the boy who just left them. "Who's he...if you don't mind me asking."
  7. Drew

He sees the stranger walk over to him and pretends not to notice. He doesn't like talking and he doesn't like strangers. He eyes the other as he gets closer.
  8. Marshall Jenkins

He walks in, looking around. HE sees his daughter at the bar, and sees the glass. HE also notices the two suspicious looking teens over in the corner. "Hmm...." HE walks over.
  9. Derick Marr

Dirk recognizes the kid's behavior and decides he's going to let him speak first. He sits in a chair across from the kid, dips his hat so that it rests just above his eyebrows, and waits.

    The Bartender

"Who's he? Miss, you're even more peculiar than I first thought." He lowers his head and talks in a hushed voice. "Him there's who the lawmen call Blaquero. Dumb name, if you ask me. He isn't even Mexican. His name's Derick Marr, Dirk for short. Killed a good man a while back, when he was around twenty, and he's been able to lay low ever since. He's a hard-to-read fellow. Quiet. Reads some. Good at disguises." He raises his elbows from the counter and juts his chin in Dirk's direction. "Guess he feels safe here - he's not disguised or anything."

Footsteps sound from outside and the saloon doors swing open. The bartender glances up to see who it is, and when he looks back at Mary he's smiling. "Mrs. Lariviere's come to play us a tune or two."

    Samantha Lariviere

A woman, aged thirty-nine, enters the saloon gracefully, her husband Wolfgang sticking close behind her. She seats herself on the piano bench, the lush and extravagant skirt of her dress spilling gracefully from all sides. Her husband, looking worriedly around at the other guests in the saloon, bends down and mutters something in her ear, to which she laughs joyously.

"Go play a game of poker," she insists, laying her fingers on the ivory keys.

"I hardly see anyone to -"

He is interrupted by a sudden outburst of sound from the piano, and, discouraged, sits at the table nearest his wife and takes out a fresh deck of cards from his pocket. He shuffles them somberly.
  10. Mary Jenkins

She;s disturbed a bit by the outburst on the piano. "He's my Pa...a Marshall from Texas. We're tracking someone down..." Her eyes glance around. "He's not the one we want, at least, I don't think."
  11. The Bartender

He huffs. "Marshall's daughter, huh? Who's it you're looking for, then?"

    Wolfgang Lariviere

Shuffling the cards pointedly, he coughs when the Marshall walks by his table.
  12. Mary Jenkins

She looks around, cautiously. "A man named Slade, he's on the run." She reaches into her hat and pulls out a wanted poster with the description and picture. "See him around?"

    Marshall Jenkins

He walks by, eying everyone. He sees one man shuffling cards. "Howdy." He leans a bit against the table.
  13. Drew

The kid sees the marshal walk in and grunts, not making eye contact. He stays quiet, not saying a word to the young man who sat down across the table from him.
  14. Derick Marr

Maybe it'll do the kid some good if he learns early. He leans forward and slaps the kid on the face, then turns his back and walks to the bar.

    The Bartender

He squints at the picture, drying an empty glass with a towel. "I've heard the name," he says. "Don't know the face."

    Wolfgang Lariviere

"Howdy. Uh, care for a game of poker?"
  15. Marshall Jenkins: (looks down at him) I don't gamble. I'm lookin for someone. (he holds up a wanted poster) Seen this man around?

Mary: (sees the man slap the kid across the face. She growls) thanks for your time. (she walks in the direction of the man who slapped the kid)
