What is a "Fact?"

6 posts in this topic.

  1. Please comment, any thoughts on the matter?
  2. A fact is a fact and thats that!
  3. 1. an event or thing known to have happened or existed

    2. a truth verifiable from experience or observation

    3. a piece of information

    4. (Law) Law (often plural) an actual event, happening, etc., as distinguished from its legal consequences. Questions of fact are decided by the jury, questions of law by the court or judge

    5. (Philosophy) Philosophy a proposition that may be either true or false, as contrasted with an evaluative statement

    (Law)
  4. In other words, "Lady Gaga rocks!" Cannot be considered a fact because it depends on what that particular person considers to be true, even though it may not be. Can you scientifically, legislatively, or philosophically prove that Lady Gaga rocks?

(Unless of course, you mean that Lady Gaga performs rock music, which is probably incorrect anyway considering the musical terminology.)
  5. I'm confused, it's all very well to start this discussion, but do we really need to know what a fact actually is, wouldn't most people have already sussed out what a fact is and isn't? Still Dragon you pointed out some very valid things =)!
  6. Well, a fact, to me, is something non-negotiable.

Like, for example, if someone holds up a rock and says, "This is a rock," that would be a fact.

However, if someone holds up a rock and says "This is a sedimentary rock," and I think that it's igneous, than it isn't a fact. It's a matter that needs investigation to find a fact to either confirm or discard one or both sides of the discussion.

Stop being mean to your self-insert character, you're just being mean to yourself.
