What was the first impression of the main characters? Issac, Hazel, Hazel's mom, Augustus or any other's that have entered the story yet?

My first impressions? We'll talk about Hazel, I suppose first.
Hazel struck me as someone who had given up but was looking for an excuse to have hope again. She sees Augustus as an excuse to live again, and that scares her. -
Given as I have only read the first chapter, these are my really first impressions: Hazel seems depressed in a way that's different to other people. I have the feeling she needs someone else to rely on, and really trust. And I suppose that will be Augustus. Hazel's mum seems like someone who wants the best for her child, from what I have gathered. I don't know much about Isaac yet... so no comment yet

I feel like both Augustus and Hazel are the kind of people that would think of themselves as better than or smarter than other people even if they hadn't been hit with tragedy -- like they'd never have really liked any of their basketball friends / the girl who goes to the mall with Hazel. They always thought of themselves as intellectually superior.
Do you agree, or do you think it was portrayed as result of the cancer? -
Actually Hannah, I totally agree with you. The way Hazel looks down on the girl that goes to the mall with her, even when she's talking about the girl's dislike of open toed shoes, she speaks in a disdainful voice and makes fun of the girl for caring so much. Maybe part of it is the cancer, Hazel is jealous because she can't only worry about such mundane things, or maybe another part of it is the fact that she secretly thinks, in the back of her mind, that she really is intellectually superior because of the cancer.
Which in my mind, brings up an interesting point. Is one of the reasons the two of them get along so well because they're both going through the same thing? If Augustus hadn't or didn't have cancer, would Hazel have fallen in love with him so easily? If Hazel wasn't going through a never ending fight with herself, would Augustus have been so drawn to her? -
Hazel seems like she has come to conclusion that her life is going to be "like this and like that" because she has cancer. It doesn't look like she is depressed or has lost love for life but she has in many ways let her cancer become her.
I agree with Hannah and Spark. Maybe one of the reason Augustus and Hazel get along so well is because they both have gone through something similar.
I find Augustus very creative. Cancer has affected them in different ways. For Augustus it opened up him to the world and for Hazel it made her shut her heart from the same world.
