My plot bunny's been growing like crazy, getting fatter. He's actually spit up a sentence today.
Anyway, here he is.
In Illumina, everyone has a Gift. Their Gift is controlling one of eight elements- Fire, Earth, Air, Time, Darkness, Shadow, Light, or Water. Fire-Gifted are the most highly regarded, while the Water-Gifted are
looked down on as scum. Kairi Edan is the daughter of the most respected women Gifted in Fire.
Illumina is at war. All the Gifted children aged 13-15 are being Tested for their gift, earlier than the usual sixteen. Anyone controlling Fire, Earth, Air, Time, Light, or Shadow are sent to fight, while those controlling Darkness have already joined the other side. It's Kairi's turn, and when she steps into that arena... she finds that she is gifted in Water. Suddenly, everyone is disappointed in her. She cannot fight for her country (she desperately wanted to fight with her mother, to show her mother that she really was worth her time), and she is treated like she has a disease. Her mother nearly disowns her, and she decides to run away. She finds a woman Gifted in Time, who reveals to Kairi that her best friend, Iridian, who is Gifted in Light, has gone missing from battle. It is up to Kairi to prove her worth, save Iridian, and prove to her mother that those Gifted in Water truly aren't that bad.
