The who: Young Writers Society
The what: Scheduled downtime
The where: Here?
The when: February 7, 5 am GMT to approx. 5 pm GMT same-day
The why: Switching hosting providers
The Young Writers Society will be going down for an extended length of time beginning at 5am GMT, February 7. What's going on is that I'll be switching YWS' hosting provider from VPS.net to Linode. As I've mentioned before, I've been unhappy with VPS.net over a long list of issues that I've described elsewhere. If you're unfamiliar with those issues, read the topics posted in the Information Desk a little more
In this case, though, the final straw was this morning. I received an email from VPS.net at 12:06 pm GMT informing me that the cloud our server is in would be down for two hours for scheduled maintenance starting at... 12:00 pm GMT. That's something I'd usually ignore, but it comes after a long list of problems.
Anyways, the downtime may last for as little as just a few hours to as long as a day. I wish I could give a better estimate, but switching servers can be unpredictable. When it happens, updates will be shared through the Twitter account (see my signature for the link). The backup site will also be available (http://yws.nathancaldwell.com).
The new server will also be slightly more powerful than the current one. I doubt it'll affect page load speeds in any way, but there will be less downtime if only because YWS will be switching to a more competent hosting provider. Unfortunately, there is a higher price associated with doing so, but it'll be worth it.
