So, yeah. Math has never been my strong point, and my parents are about as skilled as I am. I tremble at the sight of these problems. They're a piece of cake for you smart people, but my twelve-year-old mind is too tired to think straight.
9m-7m-5=17
Is there a property I should be using to simplify this?
And...
3t + 5
--------- = -5

Ick. Any help in showing a poor seventh grader the steps?
EDIT:
I have new problems! These first two, thanks to Jared and Snoink, are taken care of. Now, I've got word problems.
Anyone care to help me unravel them?
[s]There are two trees in a yard. One of them is 50 inches tall and grows at a rate of 2 inches per month. The other tree is 59 inches tall and grows at a rate of 1 inch per month. How many month will it take until both trees reach the same height?[/s] Solved. Thanks to Random.Thoughts, who rocks epically.

Roses cost $15 for a dozen, or more in bought individually. You want to purchase 9 dozen and 6 individual roses for a party decoration. For the price of 9 dozen and 6 individual roses you can also purchase 51 individual roses. How much is one rose? How much money do you have to spend on the party decoration?
I would be able to do these if I new exactly which equation to use. How should I phrase it? They, obviously, have variables. I think each problem has two of the same variable, like two x's or two h's, but not an x and an h. If that makes any sense.
Help? I'll be forever grateful to you brilliant word-problem decipher-ers.
