Tess
My eyes went wide. "I, uh, I don't, uh, sing. Just tumbling."
"C'mon Tess, I wanna hear how you sound!"
"I could sing in the car!"
"She's next!" Ricky yelled, yanking my hand in the air. I squeaked out a 'what?!' and stared at him as he dragged me onto the stage and nudged the mic stand in front of me. I managed a breathy giggle as a spotlight swept over. Ricky waved his hand forward. I swallowed.
"Use Somebody Acoustic, Paramore mix, please."
"Gotcha," the dj replied, and then... I was singing.
"I've been roaming around, I was looking down at all I see, painted faces fill the places I can't reach. You know that I could use somebody, you know that I could use somebody,"
My voice wasn't anything like Danny's powerhouse, melt-you-to-the-bone sound. Mine was a more soft, almost husky, more jazzy sound. Which was weird, since I hated most jazz.
"Someone like you and all you know and how you speak. Countless lovers under cover of the street. You know that I could use somebody, you know that I could use somebody... someone like you!"
I looked at Ricky now, smiling.
"Off in the night while you live it up I'm off to sleep, waging wars to shake the poet and the beat. I hope it's gonna make you notice, I hope it's gonna make you notice... Someone like me, someone like me! Someone like me, somebody!"
I was actually enjoying this, even though I could feel Danny's glare beating into my skull. Ricky's beam made up for that, and my voice didn't sound as bad as when Laurie convinced me to sing in the gym.
"I'm ready now, I'm ready now, I'm ready now, I'm ready now, I'm ready now, I'm ready now, I'm ready now! Someone like you, somebody! Someone like you, somebody! Someone like you, somebody! I've been roaming around, I was looking down at all I see..." I closed the song softly, slipping the mic back in the mic stand and taking a quick bow before rushing offstage.
"Tess, that was good!"
"Meh, well, Danny's better."
"Oh, hush."
I smirked at his words and leaned into him again.
