I'm usually really good at being able to locate a copyright owner, but I'm stumped on this one so I'm turning over to the community for help on this.

I'm looking for the copyright owner of the picture at the end of this post. It's used as a wallpaper in the downloads section, and what I want to do is turn what I have there into a poster. But since it'll be sold, I need the permission of the copyright owner.

Thus far, I can find nothing...

Not sure if this helps but I found the image in use on the web and I'd imagine it's either theirs or they know the copyright owner - (scroll down).

They may know, but the problem with this image is that it's so widely used. I've found it on dozens of web sites, but I've found no way of tracing it back to the original author.

Hmm, the BBC has used a black and white version of it and I'd assume, by their general proffessionalism and necessity, they will have the copyright quoted somewhere... but I don't know how you'd go about finding it or if they'd reply to an e-mail... sorry!

Would you be open to using another image?

I found this one which is kinda simailar, i'm not sure if the terms allow it to be edited, but if you can you could make it a sepia tone like the other one.

I had a go at editing but i aint to good in photoshop:

And if you don't like that one i'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find another one on a image stock site somewhere.

I have an inkling that it belongs to this site http://www.thewritersworkshop.net/classes_fiction.htm, since so many other sites link to it. I reckon your best bet would be to email them and maybe some other sites to find out if they know who owns the copyright. I'll come back if I find anything more solid.

Here

This is the link Matt Bellamy posted, but Matt's is broken. I think it belongs here, but you can always send the owner a message with the question.

Thanks all. Matt's link worked, but it had a comma in it due to the sometimes incorrect url parsing of phpBB.

Anyways, I shot of an e-mail to the The Writers Workshop, but I don't think it's theirs either as the BBC one found by kitty15 predates it by a year. And the BBC one ain't likely to be the original since it's been modified; so who knows who it belongs to. I've found the image everywhere from blogs to government websites.

Since the copyright owner can't be found (unless TWW does turn out to be the owner), I'm gonna go along with Kadie's idea because that image is knowingly distributed under a relatively unrestricted license.

Again, thanks all for your help on this!

This is probably a bit late, but if I were you I'd comb sxc.hu, the morgue file, corbis, and gettyimages. My bet would be that it comes from one of those bigger stock sites, since it's so widely used.
