*Hi everyone! This fanfic is underneath my folder titled “Spiderverse fanfics”. It’s based off the Spider Man video game from 2020. It’s a PlayStation video game. Now, I know it’s a bit to odd to see me post a superhero fanfic, but I really like the Spider Man lore. This is a “fix-it” fanfic because I didn’t like how the game handled everything that Phin did. My brother is more well-versed in superhero lore than me, so I asked him to read this before I posted it. He liked it! That being said, I apologize if there is any inaccuracies. Gacha Club character designs are underneath my forum titled “My character designs<33”. After this fanfic I’ll start posting my original stories. I hope that you enjoy!*
Miles typed through the computer, intent on getting him and Phin out of Roxxon’s facility. They had to be quick, as Krieger had many people working for him, waiting to attack them both.
But the tension between him and Phin was palpable. She wasn’t going to forgive him for being Spider-Man, but he still couldn’t believe that she was the Tinkerer.
There were many things that she did that made him feel sick to his stomach, but she used to be his best friend, so maybe there was still time for him to fix their slightly torn relationship.
“Look Phin, I’m sorry. I-“
“Save it, Miles. After this, I never want to see you again after what you did.”
That did it for him. He stopped typing on the computer and turned towards her. He’d get to soon after, he wanted to escape as much as she did.
With a shaking voice that was reluctant to speak, he forced it to rise, lodged all of his feelings out of him:
“What I did? How about we talk about what you have been doing, Phin? Like how you’ll nearly kill the entirety of Harlem with your plan?”
At that, Phin looked infuriated. Her eyebrows furrowed, and her lips curled into a snarl, prepared to spout something vile about him, but Miles wasn’t done yet.
“You want to get rid of Roxxon, right? Because of what they’re doing? I agree with that sentiment. After what they did to Rick, they deserve to have their whole operation destroyed…but not like this.”
Miles paused, swallowing down the tears. He couldn’t believe that he was saying all of that to someone who he once trusted, someone who he thought that he was going to make scientific breakthroughs with.
Phin was going to speak again, so he had to continue. As much as his heart was beginning to hurt, he had to have that conversation with her.
“You claimed that you aren’t targeting the rest of Harlem, butinnocent people get caught in the crossfire. That’s what happens in war. That’s what happened at the rally. The people attending could have been shot by Roxxon or the Underground. The Underground could have killed anyone at any time, not just at the rally. You gave criminals high-tech weapons, do you really think that they care about the bystanders? About me and you? No. They don’t. They just want to terrorize and harm anyone they see. I’ve seen them very nearly kill the bystanders. The only reason innocents didn’t die was because I saved them.”
More tears were building up, but he willed himself to continue, just like how he willed himself to trudge into the biting cold night, with nothing but Ganke’s voice in his phone to keep him company, all for the sake of protecting Harlem.
“I know what it’s like to lose someone. I lost my father. I’m not trying to compare, because your tragedy is yours, but Phin…my Mom could have died because of you. She could gotten killed by either one of the groups. When you send out the Underground, you’re endangering the people of Harlem more than Roxxon. Roxxon has technology higher than yours. They’re always prepared to fight back, and they can make anybody look like the villain in their stories. But the people aren’t. They don’t know about any of this. They don’t know how deep this is. You want them to see Roxxon for what they truly are, so why not just send out the files of what they’ve done? Your technology could have found a way. Hell, I would have helped you expose Roxxon. But this…risking the lives of so many innocents…”
The tears stopped. They froze in his eyes. All of a sudden, Miles didn’t feel like crying. He didn’t feel anything. No anger, no rage, no sorrow. No hurt. Nothing at all.
Of course, Phin looked absolutely furious, like he had accused her of mass murder. That was true, in a way. She never once thought about the others in Harlem, the others that could have experienced a tragedy much like hers. Why would she? She believed wholeheartedly that she was correct. She always did, ever since they were little, but he assumed that she had changed after the years went by.
“You’re calling me the bad guy? My technology was far superior to Roxxon’s, I was always one step ahead! You just didn’t trust me. You don’t know what you’re doing. You don’t know what this means to me. You led us right to your Uncle. You’re the one who-“
“I didn’tknow my Uncle was aligned with Krieger. I didn’t know he was going to capture us. I didn’t know that I was going to lose another family member. I never asked to be Spider Man. I never asked for this life. I could die any second, and nobody would know why. I never knew my Uncle, and I don’t know you. You hate me as though I’ve hurt you, but I’m just trying to keep the city safe. I didn’t know you were the Tinkerer. You’re mad at me for lying about being Spider Man, but you never told me about the mask you wear. You never told me anything. You’re risking it all just to kill Roxxon, but did you ever think about the others that could have died? I can’t ever think about myself because that’s my duty. I never told you or Mom about what I am because I was trying to keep you safe. I didn’t want you thrown into this mess, but I guess you had no problem with waging an attack on the plaza. Yes, you were targeting Roxxon, but others could have died.”
It was amazing and quite frankly, astonishing that she still looked livid with him! After all that she had done, and she still didn’t see it!
“I didn’t want to talk to you about this because I know how you must feel, but you don’t listen. You want me to listen, but as soon as I do, you try to beat me to death. Are you trying to kill me? Do you want to make amends? Do you want me dead? What do you want, Phin? I can’t read minds. I can’t predict the future. I never dreamed of this outcome, but…”
“I’ve lost a friend too.”
Miles turned towards the computer. There was no time to talk anymore. Their time was already running out.
He heard Phin calling him names and accusing him of things, but he ignored her. His only focus was the computer.
In his heart, he felt a gaping, wide hollowness where his trust used to be. Mom was never going to know anything about what went down at the Roxxon facility, he’d see to it. He’d get home and act like everything was fine, like his best friend since childhood hadn’t betrayed, like Uncle Aaron, the only friend he thought was left, hadn’t sold him out. He still had Ganke. His Mom still loved him. He wasn’t entirely alone…yet.
A rather troubling, bothersome thought had crept up to his mind, one that he tried to cram away with the memories of his long-gone Dad, but it came tumbling out anyway:
How long would he be able to grin and bear it before he broke?
