Some Things

There are some things in life
That cannot be described with words spoken
Or in anyway at all.

Things that cannot be understood
By those who have not experienced them.

Sometimes those things are
The most wonderful things that are
Almost unimaginable.

The feeling of your heart jumping into your throat
During your first kiss.

The light in your eyes
As you watch the fireworks go up
In the air
For the first time.

The experiences that cannot be done more than once
But can only be relived
In one’s memory.

These are the things that must
Be appreciated
And remembered.

But there are also the things
That are not so pleasant.

The things that haunt you
At 2 AM when you are
Alone.

The feeling when you’re
Crying
And there’s no one there
To comfort you.

These are the feelings of despair
That a person cannot imagine
Unless they too have had
That experience.

Unfortunately
The bad experiences
Can happen
Over
And over
And over
Again.

And they do not go away
But instead
Come back to haunt you.

The darkness
That engulfs you
Without choice
And makes you blind
To all the good things in life.

But we must try to remember
The good experiences in life
The one’s that only occur only once
In a lifetime.

Because there is a limit
To how bad something can be
And that limit is death.

But there is endless opportunity
To how amazing something can be.

Hello, Kiran.

Usual disclaimer: I'm not really the best poetry editor. This will be mostly opinions and suggestions.

I actually really like this opining. I can't say what it is about it, but it just reads so well.

You're getting a bit of bad repetition here. The two highlighted phrases are repetitive as well as the italicized words. That's a lot of repetition for just two lines, and, just as it looks awkward and cramped on paper - screen? - it also sounds awkward and cramped when read. The fix to this is simple, just reword this around a little and find some synonyms. How you edit it is completely up to you, but I'm just suggesting that you do try and revise it.

The feeling of your heart #FF0000 ">/jumping into your throat
During your first kiss.

You might want to break up the first line of this couplet so that the whole stanza fits the rest of the poem. Right now, your trend is having short, curt lines that make up a single stanza, and putting this long line in the beginning of this couplet disrupts the rhythm and flow of the poem.

The darkness doesn't have a choice? Or is it you that doesn't have a choice about whether or not the darkness engulfs you? I'm guessing that you meant that you didn't have a choice, but the way this stanza stands right now, it's saying that former instead of the latter. You might want to consider revising this so that you get your true message across.

This poem was really nicely formed. The message that you put across was really uplifting and encouraging. I don't see many of these around, poems that try to encompass the light in the dark instead of just the dark itself. This is one of the "feel good" poems and I really like that.

Happy Writting

Hi Kiran! First, welcome to YWS! Niteowl here from the Tsunami Tyrants to toss in my two cents.

Overall, I'd say you have a great message and some imagery to build on. However, you could probably cut out the beginning (everything before "The feeling of your heart..."). I had an English teacher once who said if she ever saw us use "things" in an essay, she'd cross it out and write "bananas". Granted, poems are not essays, but the same principle applies. "Things" is such a vague word that the reader can't latch on to this.

Don't describe things that make us feel. Make us feel the rush of the first kiss, the wonder of fireworks, the loneliness of crying by yourself. It's difficult, but it draws the reader in more. Make it more compact and choose your words carefully.

To end on a good note, I loved the last two stanzas. They were beautifully worded and really made me think.

Overall, you have some good ideas here, but there could be less filler and more emotion in the images. Keep writing and welcome again to YWS! :)

Hi to you! I be Sapi.

Good job on this! I like your flow, your word choice, etc. One thing in general about this poem is that, well....it's not terribly original. Don't get me wrong, it's an awesome poem :) And it's true, I confess to having written similar poems as well, despite know their unoriginality. :P The reason so many people do, however, is that it is such a universal and shared theme, that pretty much everyone can relate to. In fact, you even have a couple different big themes in here: discovery (most common for teens :P), haunting memories (extremely universal), and optimism in life (this is my favorite theme. Perhaps bring out this theme more than the other two, as it is not quite as commonly used). And because of this, pretty much everyone can relate to your poem and feel what you / the narrator felt. Which is also a really good thing. So my advice would be, cultivate that relatability, but try to also cultivate more unique themes / ideas.

Now for a few little things:

"Or in anyway at all."

"Anyway" is not one word in this context; should be "any way".

"The one’s that only occur only once"

"One's" should not have an apostrophe; it should just be "ones".

One more thing- I noticed that you used the word "experience" a bit too much. Just notice all the times you used it, especially when they are close to each other:

"By those who have not experienced them."
"The experiences that cannot be done more than once"
"That experience."
"The bad experiences"
"The good experiences in life"

And maybe try to think of a different word to replace two, three or even four of them.

So all in all, great writing! The only thing you need to work on is your themes. :)
Great job!

Happy review day,

~Sapi

Hi there, TheWritingOfKiran!

I'm GeeLyria and I'm here to review for you. :)

Personally, I like the message you're bringing us; I'm all about finding the bright-side in every stormy situation. However, I'm not a really huge fan of how you made your poem sound. Mainly, because it sounds more like an essay than poetry.

There are some things in life
That cannot be described with words spoken
Or in anyway at all.

Things that cannot be understood
By those who have not experienced them.

It wasn't until the third stanza that I spotted some imagery. Personally, I believe it would be lovely if you could work on making your start more catchy (add some spark to it); right now it gives the impression that the reader is being scolded by a random old lady at the park. xD Remember that the beginning should be like a welcome carpet; it's like the anticipation of what's going to happen and what you should feel.

That's all I'll say for now. See you around, aye? :)

Hello There....

The first stanza could use a little adjusting......you should add a comma at the end of the line and at the end of the second line I would switch the words around to make them "spoken words". The fourth stanza I would add a simile or metaphor into there because maybe not everyone has experienced that feeling and they might want to feel it......(I make no sense), but yea...I have read the rest of the poem and it seems like the problems are just being repeated.... wording and punctuation. The poem is very good......just those few and small errors.... :)
