MORAL ZERO
PART FIVE
By Set Sytes
BAR
Johnny had taken them to the nearest cheap hotel he could find and checked them in, holding the incapable Red’s pen hand and arm and operating them like a puppet to give a better signature than Red ever made sober. He had then disappeared back out into the night, only to be there waiting for them in the first bar they entered. He nodded to them from a table. Whiskey in hand. Their drinks were already set up for them. Rum for Red. Water for Mr White.
My mind’s fuckin crazy guys. I mean it. Red coughed from his straight rum. It’s just – he waved his hands as if painting a scene of chaos. Just, you got no idea.
I think of some dark things too sometimes.
C’mon White, you ain’t got shit but pretty flowers and rainbows in that heada yours.
You’re wrong.
Yeah, you are, said Johnny, eyeing Mr White. I would be surprised if he couldn’t shock you a dose or two.
You guys don’t have what I got.
Try us.
Red sighed. My mind is like this… this electric current right. And it leaps onto anythin it can, without thought or direction. It’ll just go. And often it leaps onto stuff it ain’t supposed to. So it’ll just jump right over there before you’ve even fuckin thought of anythin, before your mind’s even willed it. Nothin conscious about it. I don’t wanna think of most of this shit but I do. And, right, I do this thing right, where I scribble out my mind. Like I have a big black pen and I just scratch all over my mind’s eye like I’m crossin it all out real fast. And that buys me half a second, and then I can get my mind offa that thing and there it’ll go fuckin bouncin to somethin new, and if that’s wrong I gotta scribble that out too, cause if my mind stays, well, that just feels real wrong. Imagine if it’s something illegal -
Pedophilia.
Whatever it is. Sure that’s been in my mind, but that don’t mean nothin, cause all shit has, you see? It’s not as if I fuckin deliberate on it or condone it. It’s just a jump, and if it’s real fuckin bad then it gets the scribble. Sometimes my mind just flashes through a whole heap of stuff in a matter of seconds and I gotta try and make these jumps but I ain’t got enough control over where I’m jumpin.
He took a deep breath. But, like I was sayin, imagine if it’s somethin illegal. It gives me real fuckin discomfort. Like I’m bein observed or somethin. How do I know I ain’t? What if someone were watchin my mind and saw some of this shit? I’d be goddamn sectioned.
We all would, said Johnny.
Providin everone else ain’t just as screwed up.
They probably are. It would just make them go after us more. A guilty conscience breeds hypocrisy in activism. People getting away from their own demons go after the demons of others. Easier than fighting your own. The joke of it. Moral arbiters with arbitrary morals putting you down to become one of them, to help whip the others into the party line.
We’d be locked up just for what we can’t control, murmured Mr White.
Red rolled his eyes. You wouldn’t. Your mind is a ball of fluff where bunnies bounce on cotton wool and your long lost lover is in the arms of another man . . . under a parasol . . . in a meadow.
Mr White had grown tired of this, and stiffened. I could jump my mind better and stranger than you could.
Red raised his eyebrow. Oh really? You wanna go then, Mr White Lightnin?
Yes. Uh . . . What do I do?
Just say first thing that comes into your head man.
Uh. Um. Banana hammock.
You’re fuckin kiddin me.
Johnny leaned back in his chair with an amused expression. Corpse fires. Burning cows. Garrotted. Monkey butlers swinging from intestines.
Well a lovely contribution from the sweet Mr Black there, said Red. But right now I’m fallin down a waterfall towards a lake of baby foetuses . . . shredded like wheat. I’m covered in goat blood. Wearing a crown of shit. The foetuses are now like potato mash. The sky is rainin milk but it tastes like cum.
Mr White closed his eyes. Red sky at night . . . the barns are on fire. The family is calling out but they are roasting inside. The whole sun is touching the wood. The sun is a fertilised egg. It splits open and inside is a dung beetle with the head of my father. The family is burned black but move about like tree limbs, all staggering and crooked.
Red sniffed. Not bad.
Disembowelled tigers, said Johnny. They’re reading Camus. Libraries are desiccating to dust around them. The kidneys of our mothers are on the footsteps of an Aztec temple. They hatch into screaming apples and each apple is a god and they are bleeding, soaking the earth like red wine . . . in every town people are drinking it and bathing infants in it.
Rednecks frothin at the mouth . . . froth is semen . . . their pricks ejaculate shit onto the ground and flowers burst forth . . . flowers turn into weeds . . . the weeds grow horses like fruit on the branches and they drop off and rape the rednecks . . . the rednecks cry with pleasure . . . the horses die of infections and just their cocks remain . . . the cocks slide about like snakes and then grow insect legs and skitter into the sewage systems of cities . . . they come up through the plugholes and enter the wombs of expectant mothers causing auto-abortions.
Skulls on a cold moor . . . engineers parachute downwards -
Hey it was my turn! protested Mr White.
Fuck turns, said Johnny. Engineers parachute downwards into a field of human shit and mashed egg . . . irrigated by periods. A rainbow arches across the sky and is crossed by a chariot driven by antelopes . . . the beasts have ingrowing horns that spear out through their necks . . . climbing all over them like lice or spiders are babies with black eyes who suck on the horns like cocks.
Brains flop over the floor like fish out of water . . . the desert looks on them like it was once a man . . . there is a yard that is overflowing with monkey nuts, they spring out the ground like tulips or coming up long and hard like erections . . . an old man tends the yard but he is made out of paper and grass and he breaks down slowly and falls into a wheelbarrow made from the spines of giraffes and cheating wives.
Chocolate runs from our cocks and a harem of women and men and animals slurp at them . . . our cocks coil up in spirals and tuck themselves inside our bellies which throb and pulse like we are breedin maggots . . . our family fucks pigs in front of us while we tear our hair out and cut off our fingers with pick axes and then when we cannot hold the axes we gnaw at our hands desperately . . . the new harvest falls on our heads and our heads become huge oranges . . . we are juiced by stinkin old women . . .
Women who are obese like mountains and I dive in the folds like canyons . . . I go spelunking wearing an old miner’s helmet made out of mould and bits of crucifixes . . . I am drowned in the woman’s sweat . . . I make it to the vagina and the folds are like sogging cliff faces . . . scree falls like shit on my head . . . I am caked in primordial ooze… a two headed dog runs yapping at me from some hole and chokes on clean air . . .
Palm trees sway by the ocean which breathes like it’s alive . . . it is adorned with huge hats and people ride them like boats . . . the water’s surface is like a great skin like curdled milk and it is yellow in colour . . . a sailor drinks it and says it is better than piss . . . he anoints his children in it and claims baptism . . .
Black men call race hate on coconuts which show razor teeth and bite the cocks off white men who whine like pups . . . the blacks have white heads and the whites have black heads . . . the Asians are crocodiles in the water . . . a military drone flies overhead and drops a bomb . . . everyone explodes into pulp which rains down on a village and is taken as a fashion accessory for houses . . .
Lightning darts like broken veins and punctures the faces of lawyers and priests . . . they open up their shirts and make out . . . their skin ripples and then jellifies . . . they become one amorphous mass and cry out their love for the world . . . nearby the only cloud in the sky rains on a single man with hair like bread and his body is so waterlogged it is a wet sponge . . .
A man tells a woman he loves her and she dissolves like salt in the rain . . . she reforms into a pillar that looms over him . . . the man is no longer a man but a garden plant . . . locked up in a cell with bathroom and dining room . . . the cell constricts like an anaconda . . . through the jail bars asylum creatures chitter and cry, their faces like bugs with antenna that reach in and tickle the man-plant . . .
The jumps came thick and fast, and soon they were all talking over one another. Nobody could be sure who was saying what.
Dead wallpaper . . . rolled up in wheelchairs all crippled . . .
Peeling flesh . . . bark of a tree oozing like grease from a sheep’s ass . . .
Taps running all over the world . . . creaking and moaning as if pain . . .
Dogs with tails stitched together . . . blamed for the rape of the horned children . . .
Everybody who is loved by someone made to inject radiation . . . pustules form on their body and start to speak . . .
The grim reaper comes and is a homosexual . . . he buggers the gods in Heaven . . . the women croon old ballads . . .
Tips of fingers sliced and put in pies . . . family mealtime . . . everybody watches an empty box where spiders dance . . .
A reservoir of the tears of oysters and broken men . . . twirling on the edge is a ballet . . . the audience sits in floating boxes and clap at everything . . .
Driving a buggy over the heads of animals . . . sitting next to you is a boar . . . its hat is made of leather and it laughs at you like your mother . . .
All of us crying and masturbating with spikes through our cheeks . . . we are on a train . . . in the distance through the fog a family is stapled to a tree . . .
Whirling in oblivion . . . the end of all things . . . we are surrounded by umbrellas and the scalps of everyone we knew . . .
Pig arousal the new aphrodisiac . . .
Thunder in the sky . . . a goddess dribbles . . .
A temple falls under controlled demolition . . . society calls the anus the new church . . .
The voices eventually trailed off and then ceased. The three were quiet for a moment.
Johnny Black eventually stood up. You two need your heads sorting out. Get help before it’s too late for the rest of us. He shook his head and walked off.
Kidd Red grinned awkwardly at Mr White and scratched his hair like a dog going for fleas.
Fun. Another drink?
Yeah, smiled Mr White. Whiskey.
Red winked and beckoned the bartender over and called for two glasses. He watched her plump rear as she poured the amber liquid, swilling it down onto ice like spiced piss on a glacier. Her buttocks quivered a little, as if feeling the weight of his gaze.
Red unconsciously licked dry lips then turned away from the woman as he realised what he must look like. You should try me when I’m on hallucinogenics, he said in a serious tone to Mr White. It’s fuckin crazy man. I’m seeing new textures, new colours, seein in new dimensions, new senses, new concepts unimaginable before, everthin goin at shutter speed like maybe how a fly sees things I dunno. I’m talkin just . . . ah fuck, it’s impossible to describe. I feel like a goddamn genius though when I’m on it. Fuckin staggerin.
I bet.
Red tossed some coins on the bar and took his drink for a sip, whilst looking conspicuously at the bartender’s cleavage as she took the money. Do you think other people can do what we do? He took another sip as the woman walked away.
How do you mean?
Our mind jumpin. All the crazy thoughts.
I think anyone can probably do it. They just . . . don’t.
Red sniffed. Can’t would have been better.
I know.
Johnny was back and leaning close, ushering them in by some invisible force that craned their bodies together. The three of them in that cloud of smoke and between them they smelt like sex and death and loneliness. His husky words fell upon them and whether they agreed or disagreed they listened and no matter what was said part of them understood and felt bowed. In each of their heads they saw things to come and things that could never be.
There’s a sociopath inside everyone, he said. Everyone. Every single man and woman and all of them in between.
Not inside me there ain’t.
Yes there is Red. There’s hot fucking murder in your breast I can tell you that. It’s inside the most saintly of us, so it’s sure as hell inside you. You don’t need to have a killer’s heart to have it, cause killing ain’t in the heart. It’s somewhere else, somewhere deeper. It’s just waiting. You see, the body ain’t as shallow as we think. You think you can go in one side and come out the other a second later, like it’s all that you see, but it ain’t. If you travel on the right wave, you will journey for a long, long fucking time. It’s some half of eternity in there, don’t get me wrong. Now I’m not saying there’s all manner of endless sights to see, cause there ain’t. Nearly all of it is wasteland. Total barren desert, not even that, far as the eyes can see and then some. If you’re lucky or you know the way your path will cross with some place of detail. Maybe a shack, a hamlet, an oasis, maybe even a city. That’s where things are kept, things that make you you. And then it’s back to the wasteland. That’s you too, but it’s the absence of things. The things men can’t fill. And you go on and on, further and deeper, and god knows when you last saw anything but nothing. Finally though, you come to a hollowed out basin, and in the basin a pit, a hole. It’s there in each of us. It looks like a mine or a well but there’s no bucket and no structure, just the hole going down into blackness. It’s too far to go, way too far. But if you somehow reached that bottom, in a place darker than darkness, where light and seeing things are just the ideas of the mad, you’d hear the growling, the snorting and snuffling and the scratching and shuffling, and the drips of saliva hitting the cave floor. And you’d know you’d be in the presence of it. Embodied death. Personified sickness. A grotesquery. The sociopath in you.
Mr White was staring at Johnny with wide, childlike eyes but Red, pretending to only be listening semi-attentively, now sighed. I’m sure there was a point comin, somewhere.
Shut up, shut up and listen, growled Johnny.
Red sighed again and laid his head in his arms on the table. But he listened.
Coming down this well are two lines, and they come from way up, above the sky, above everything. These lines to some are string, or rope, or stalk, or vines or veins, but not like any of that sort you ever seen before. They hang down, but stop a long way short of the floor, far out of reach of that grotesque. For some. For a time. One of the ropes is red. The other is black.
How handy, colour-coded, Red murmured from his arms.
And, depending on the person, Johnny continued, ignoring Red, They are very different lengths. In the vast majority of people the red one is much longer, hanging down closer to the reach of that monster. It’s all twisted and scarred and sticky with blood and in it you can find pieces of bone meal. It pulsates and in it you can feel an irregular beat. The red vine symbolises passion, leading to crimes of passion. These can be most things, even pre-meditated. They may be symptomatic of revenge, vengeance against those who have wronged you directly or indirectly. They are characterised by a tempest of emotion, such as anger, hate and lust. Frustration. Impotence. All those symptoms and events that lead you closer to that final effect, or multitude of effects – each of them lengthens the vine, or lowers it from above. Every temptation, every time someone pushed you, angered you, done you wrong. The vein gets longer. It twists down like it’s alive. Perhaps it is. Things keep going wrong, then that thing down there can jump up and grab it. And then, claws hooked in and snarling and frothing, it climbs . . .
Then there’s the black rope. This is sharp and dull. It looks dead, like tangled black hair. Less vicious looking than the red one, but you don’t want to go near that one. You don’t want it reaching the bottom.
What is it? asked Mr White breathlessly.
Johnny looked him hard in the eye. Disconnection, he said. It’s disconnection, dissociation, plain and simple. Detachment from the world. It ain’t an easy thing to tell anyone, they got to know it for themselves. Else they look at you strange, or get all psychoanalytical on you, like you’re some science project. Some people are more prone to the black vein. It trails down, fed by things like isolation, disillusion, apathy and depression – I mean real fucking nothingness depression, deep philosophy and overthinking, misanthropy, confinement, solitary existence. Lack of distraction. Lack of love, lack of hope, lack of joy. All of them feeding into each other. Too much virtual reality, maybe. Perhaps trauma, tragedy or abuse somewhere, they too can jump the black down, though they are not necessary but they sure help. It creates numbness. Maybe there’s nought but unflinching rationality driving the descent. But once that black goes a-lowering, whatever takes it, it’s real hard to raise it back up. And the effects, once that creature climbs, can be much more horrific than the ascent of the red. There are no innocents.
You done? Red lifted his head up with a wry smile.
You’re a man of unbridled passion, Johnny replied. You’ve got a lonnnng red vein. Hell, that creature is bouncing and leaping up trying to snag his teeth and claws in that dangling thing.
Red curled his lip and looked down, and then looked back up and rolled his eyes. Red for red, black for black too I bet. How goddamn convenient.
Yes, I am on the black. There ain’t nothing convenient about it. I know I don’t have a red line.
Red sat up and raised his hands. Whoa now, fuck off. Yeah you do. If we all got these ropes or vines or whatever the hell they are, then so do you. You ain’t special.
Johnny smiled. I got the black. That’s enough.
No no no no. Your red may be a bit shorter than mine but it’s there. Hell, I know I could make you snap.
Johnny chuckled. Yeah, I’m sure. I’ll just advise you don’t try and make Mr White snap.
Red turned to Mr White quizzically. Him?
He’s got the longest of both lines. Maybe they’re all tangled up together, just the one red and black line. He’s the most dangerous person I know.
Fuck off.
Johnny leaned in to Mr White and spoke softly. What do you think about all this?
Mr White wasn’t making eye contact with anybody. He was looking down at the floor and had been for a while. I think . . . I think . . . I think it makes sense. He swallowed. I can get the idea of being pushed too far . . . and of losing connection. It’s confusing. I don’t know, I just feel I get it. It’s similar to things I’ve thought myself.
Keep talking.
Um. Sometimes, like when I’ve had too much time to myself, things feel more distant. I feel more distant. Things feel kind of alien. I start to question things, just lightly at first, hypothetically. A wry amusement. Questioning reality, I mean. Um. People sometimes feel like, like just characters. And then like cardboard cut-outs. When I walk the streets . . . I’ve felt a lack of . . . integration. As though sometimes I’m the only real thing and I’ve just been dropped here to see how I’ll react. Like a test. An experiment. Sometimes there’s a temptation to break the system. I guess. I don’t know. It’s like you said, you can’t really explain it unless you’re already like that. But I get it.
Johnny turned to Red and raised his eyebrows, jabbing his finger at Mr White. This. This is why he’s the most dangerous.
Red looked confused, then just muttered fuck, and left it at that.
Sometimes it feels like I’m just stuck in some kind of game, Mr White said softly.
Black closed his eyes and Red stood up, swearing again and this time loudly, but it was drowned out by a piercing siren, some kind of alarm.
Mr White looked about confused, and saw all the others in the bar staring at them, some of them stood up. None of them had a kind expression.
What’s going on?! he cried, wringing his hands.
For fuck’s sake get a grip! Red yelled over the sound. Don’t fuck up like that!
Johnny grabbed Red by the collar. Get a grip yourself, he growled in his ear. You’re fucking up in a whole nother way.
What’s going on? Mr White shouted again, just as the siren abruptly ended, and his words seemed to echo in the sudden emptiness, thrown out into the silent world.
Sit back down. Both of you, said Johnny quietly from his seat, as the other patrons of the bar got back to theirs and returned to their own business. It was an alarm, White. Like in Ten, remember? That was Red’s fuckup. Remember what you read and calm down. But we ain’t gonna talk about it, not now and not later. So let’s just drink our drinks and go on as normal, alright?
Red sniffed and slumped back in his seat, downing his drink and hammering it back on the bar. Mr White made to protest but a glare from Johnny made him sit down himself, his brow furrowed and his eyes flicking about as he worked through things in his head.
God in Hell, we’ll be the death of each other, Johnny scowled.
Here’s hopin, Red said, and burped.
STREET
The night clustered around them, cruel and cold. They were outside another bar and Mr White was trembling, but he didn’t know if it was from cold or something else.
Beside them Red was vomiting, torrid sick pouring and dribbling out of his mouth like he was under some ectoplasmic possession. It splashed on the pavement under him with a sound like the slapping of wet cloth and in the moments when nothing was forthcoming he filled the silence with demonic, animal retching.
Will he be okay? Mr White glanced at Red, concerned. I don’t know what he took tonight. I can’t keep track of him.
I’m sure he’s a professional, said Johnny dryly. Ain’t you Kidd?
Red replied with another retch, cacophonous and guttural, a nightmare plea pulled from the belly of a dying animal.
He says yes.
We should get back to the hotel. Mr White walked over to Red and patted him ineffectually on the back.
Go, said Johnny. I’ll go my way.
Should we arrange a time to meet up?
I’ll find you. Tomorrow.
Mr White looked at Red and hesitated. Perhaps I should wait until he’s in a bit of a better state.
Has he ever been in a better state?
You can go though.
I will stay.
They stayed, saying nothing. Looking out into the night. Watching the patrons of the bar exit and walk off. Some looked in disgust at Red. Within ten minutes the bar had emptied and closed its doors.
Mr White watched Johnny as he watched a woman walk on the pavement opposite them, past them. She was not from the bar. She held her head high and walked with a strong, confident gait. Her hair was in a tight ponytail and she was dressed in a leather jacket and faded black jeans. She was not particularly attractive but there was a certain intensity to her gaze, which lay fixed on the path ahead of her. An intensity beaten by Johnny’s dark, fierce gaze. He watched her coolly like a predator. Unblinking. His cigarette hanging loosely from his mouth leaking smoke. Mr White watched Johnny as he watched the woman walk. Her gait. The set of her jaw. Her character. Her soul.
What’s wrong? whispered Mr White quietly, tentatively.
Ssh. The noise hissed out through his teeth, around the cigarette, and for a second the cigarette flared bright and bloody and the smoke blew forward.
The woman turned a corner and disappeared out of sight. Johnny watched the corner. Seconds passed. Each one throbbed like it was the drum of the world. And then Johnny started walking. His long legs were measured, purposeful in their stride. He didn’t look to the side. He didn’t look behind him. Mr White watched as Johnny turned the same corner and he too was out of sight, and he had not said anything, had let him go.
Seconds passed. The drum beat harder. Mr White shivered, and realised that Red had stopped being sick. He looked down and saw he had disappeared, had left his foul exorcism behind as though some reminder of the past, of a presence vanished. It looked to Mr White in that thin, gleaming streetlight like a signal, a warning. Some oblique pattern left by the sick and the damned and decipherable only by the sick and the damned. The streetlight flickered and buzzed and for a fracture of a second it was cast into shadow. With the light back, the foulness of the body remained but the soul behind it was still gone.
Mr White rubbed his arms. He was alone. He moved forward, jerkily, as though some puppet on a stage. He stopped. He moved again. He shuffled towards the corner self-consciously, took a deep breath, and then turned it.
Nothing. A dead street. The backs of disused warehouse clubs and closed gun shops. Corrugated iron fences protecting nothing. Things never finished, empty and unfurnished with great holes yawning in their structure. Further up, squat, faceless buildings with bricks cloaked black. It seemed as though they were looming out from ahead, clustering into his perspective and trying to close the gap of light where the backstreet came out on a wider road.
He continued walking forward. He was halfway down the street when he heard a noise. It was repeating itself, occasionally changing tone but it was murky, unclear. It sounded like the echo of some exotic bird or some repetitive children’s toy with the volume turned down. It was wordless. In the daytime it might have sounded comical, here it sounded terrifying. Mr White had stopped dead. He did not want to move on and he did not want to turn his back on such a noise.
He heard it again, a muffled screech. Insistent and inhuman.
No, human. The truth hit him. A truth out of the darkness. It was the sound of the best a human could muster when they could not speak. A human desperate for attention and yet unable to raise more than the most feeble shrill. It was the sound of impotence and tragedy. It was the woman.
Mr White stepped forward, again more Frankenstein’s monster than man, and then he stopped as abruptly as he had started. His limbs locked. His jaw tense with terror. His eyes were wide and mad when they were open and wrinkled tight when closed. They went on and off, like switches.
The impotence of the woman spread to him and ensnared him. He willed himself to move and yet he didn’t. That will to action became quieter and quieter, as though it had a volume control and Johnny Black was turning it down just as he had turned down the woman’s attempt to scream. His mind was sluggish and bleak, frozen. His conscious was a glacier at the start of its course, too slow to have a destination.
The only thoughts that surfaced from this frozen mire were monosyllabic. Don’t. Can’t. Must. Can’t. Him.
Seconds passed into minutes. Anyone looking would have thought Mr White had been zombified, struck hard and stuck fast. A trembling statue.
In a burst of heat, wild, uncontrolled heat, the glacier melted and Mr White ran. It was instinctual, without time for thought or will. He ran back the way he had come.
The sounds of the woman had stopped, but he took no notice. He was deaf to the sounds of the world. Dumb to the ways of the world. Blind to the lights, the shadows.
He stopped, made himself stop, and immediately slumped against the wall. Red was lying next to him, semi-conscious, mumbling and drooling. Mr White was muttering nothings into his hands. He stopped, reached out to Red’s pockets and dug out a cigarette packet and a lighter and he lit a cigarette and smoked it hard, harshly. The smoke misted in the cold air. It burst and coalesced when he coughed. Ten minutes later and his second smoke drifted its fog around him, and Johnny came upon him veiled in silver. His hat pulled down. His form a shadow in itself. A whisper in the night.
Mr White glanced up at him and looked back down.
Johnny nodded at him. Mr White sensed the movement and nodded at the ground.
There was silence for a minute as Johnny smoked, stood up in front of him, looking at Mr White. Mr White sat down looking at the ground.
What happened with that woman, Johnny? Mr White said eventually, the words rushing out fast and hard into the cold air. He clamped his lips tight and ground his teeth.
Which woman.
The one just now. The one you followed. Just now.
What about her.
I heard screaming.
No you didn’t. Johnny was calm, cool. His rasping voice buried itself in the dark, quietly rumbling its stones and weeds.
I heard something. Mr White tried to not let himself stammer. It was becoming easier. Something was changing. The night was becoming more relaxed. The tension was winding down. Johnny’s words cradled him.
What did you hear?
I don’t know.
Well.
There was silence for another minute. They had both finished their cigarettes. Mr White put the packet and the lighter back in Red’s pocket. Red mumbled something indistinct and his eyes opened briefly and shut again.
Did you follow the woman? Mr White asked again. Calmer now.
Yes.
What did you do with her?
Raped her. Johnny put his hand in the rim of his jean pocket and took it out again. You know what I did.
The wire of the night tensed, wound itself tight for a second. The city felt on strain. Then it relaxed again. It seemed to speed up, and then slow again. It hummed, and then fell silent.
You raped her? Now Mr White seemed incredulous, as if he had forgotten the backstreet, as if it was some nightmare in miniature that had blurred and drifted away in the time since its inception.
That’s what I said. Johnny sighed almost imperceptibly.
What? said Mr White, and he had forgotten, forcibly forgotten all but a shadow of before. He grimaced. You’re joking?
I don’t joke.
Why would you do such a thing?
You knew what I was when you met me. I told you who I am. What I do. He whistled through his teeth. The thin shrill of a tea kettle.
It’s a fine thing ain’t it, he said, his hands resting lightly on his hips. When a murderer can be good and a rapist never so. There ain’t no such thing as a good rapist. Good murderers are easy to find. If you rape, you done sentenced your own doom. Not so for murder. Any kind of murder can be excused if the character wills it.
Did you murder her? said Mr White, lightly, as if him and his words were at a great distance to each other.
Johnny grinned and said nothing.
This is you then, is it? Mr White finally looked up and met Johnny’s eyes.
Anything can be imitated, murmured Johnny.
Mr White asked him what he meant by that but Johnny merely shook his head and turned away, finally freeing Mr White from the awfulness of that prolonged gaze. But he saw his eyes before he turned around and though they were dark and steeled, in the pits of them he saw the flickers of dancing stars, dancing in an ocean of unfathomable sadness.

hey, sorry for the late review.
that one-upping in dark thoughts the three of them had was great. as it devolved and the characters talked over each other, i could still tell who was talking just from the imagery they created. that's speaks a lot to the strength of your characters.
Black is right about White being the most dangerous - i know his capabilities because the more i read of him and his thoughts, the more they mirror my own. Mr. White is the ultimate sociopath, having a tenuous link to reality and other people. if he snapped, he'd be capable of anything.
and i guess it had to come sooner or later, Black raping or killing someone. Mr. White had been hoping that all Black's talk was just that, but now his hopes are dashed and seeing him compute it was enthralling. around the corner he knew what he was hearing, and his reaction was perfect for his character.
also, i like your wording when you described Redd puking. i've never seen such flowery language applied to a man vomiting, but the great thing is none of your descriptive language, even though it's dramatic, ever feels overly dramatic. i think the puking part was a perfect example of your ability to convey something drab or disgusting using powerful imagery and make it work.
my first ever nitpick of your work, and its just grammatical:
i think you can guess my nitpick with those sentences :p. pry just missed it in editing, or if it was intentional, it it threw me off.
i'm looking forward to more Mr White, as usual lemme know when the next part is up.
Thanks for the review! No worries, you can reply whenever! I'm just happy someone's reading it lol.

I'm glad you liked the stream of consciousness bit, as I've often considered it the weakest bit of the novel and that bit I'd most likely cut if asked to by an editor. It does have a subtle reason for being there but it's also mainly a William Burroughs parody/homage, who writes like that for pretty much the whole of Naked Lunch
As for Black, it's not cut and dried. I certainly don't have the answers... but perhaps ponder that Mr White hasn't actually SEEN Johnny do anything. Who knows anything, really.
As for nitpick, thank you for pointing that out! I assume you mean the repetition of 'and in it you can' which I'm not sure I really picked up on before. I will change it.
Thank you again for an excellent review! I especially needed it because I've been facing criticism as of late which I've had to deal with. I've also sent the novel to pretty much the only person who can help me find an agent right now - my uncle - but I'm faced with the total awkwardness of sending such a filthy novel to a family member, combined with the likelihood that he's going to be pretty brutal with it - and I'm expected to be told that it's just not marketable. But I'll never know unless I try... even if he never looks at me the same again! But yeah, it's good to have nice feedback to de-stress me and build my confidence while I'm doing this

you may have to face the reality that the sicker stuff in this novel will throw people who don't appreciate the finer points off. it's already been proven by someone on this site that people can look past the truly deep dialogue and simply be turned off by the perversions. there probably won't be a ton of people like you and i that can see the words "anal" and "rape" without batting eyelashes. the world is probably too conservative for this novel, to be honest.
Perhaps, perhaps. Although I want them to bat eyelashes, to make them uncomfortable is my point
I've always thought if it was published, the best way to promote it would be to send it to every blogging/newspaper outlet we know would hate it. Send it to the Daily Mail and get them to whip up a storm of outrage. It worked for Grand Theft Auto!
*Drops from sky* Rawr! Guess who? Heehee.

I think this one was my favorite parts so far. I can't write a review; I've already told you everything I like and don't like about your work. But this one was the best. I've been waiting for more on Mr. White this whole time, and I think I now understand the characters. You've also done a wonderful job describing human nature; I can pretty much place every single word you've said onto myself. There's only one thing you forgot to mention: once you realize this about yourself, and even morse so, accept it, you lose your humanity. There are few things that separate humans from animals (besides apposable thumbs) and one of them is self-fear. Once we realize the sociopath inside ourselves, and no longer fear to speak of it, we lose our self-loathing and thus lose a large part of our humanity.
Just a little something to chew on
Oh, and wouldja look at that? I wrote enough for a review! See, this is what happens when I read something philosophical and start to think. I blame you, amigo.
Haha. Thank you very much! I really enjoyed reading that. I never thought you'd have turned around this much
You make a very good point.
