Mirror 2.0

by eilisBK

Mirror mirror on the wall,

who's the fairest of them all?

It can't be me,

for what I see

is pretty but not perfect.

A gentle face,

but cheeks too big

and eyes that weep warm tears.

My belly's tight,

my ass a sight.

I'm "skinny" but not perfect.

Explain to me

just who may be

this perfect beauty queen.

With her skinny waist

and symmetrical face,

she's perfect but not happy.

So let us feast,

and laugh and be

our pretty imperfect selves.

That perfect body

that can't be reached

we must say our farewells.

This was a really, really nice poem! I honestly have nothing to pinpoint or nitpick here, it's just great!

Let me delve into the topic here for a bit and be all philosophical and stuff. God is this so relatable. We look in the mirror and usually we see not the truth. Usually our perception of beauty and our perception of ourselves is what we see. This is why the most prettiest person in the world can be unhappy with their appearance, because their perception of beauty does not match what they themselves are. Beauty is very subjective in a way. That's what I feel this poem conveys, and its faithful advice of doing away with these perceptions and being happy with who we are in truth.

That advice is advice I myself need to work on. I have the opposite problem, I look in the mirror and think to myself "god I'm ugly!"

Keep up the good work!

Wow! I absolutely loved and connected to the previous version, but this one really hit me. The conclusion to this work can honestly be ouch to read, especially when your (or I am) not able to accept the whole,

“That perfect body

that can't be reached

we must say our farewells.”

It is so beautifully written. Definitely brings and executes very strong emotions. I believe all of your work is inspirational and beautiful inside and out. I AM WAITING FOR MORE haha! (But please, really post more because this is so powerful) it’s like a punch of reality in the gut, and honestly it may be what I need. ❤️

With all my deepest respect and love,

No, it's not that you didn't succeed. You accomplished a lot, but, if you want to touch people, don't concentrate so much on rhyme and metre. Think more about what you want to say instead of how you're saying it.
