(tell me a dream where i am not drowning in a twilight of infinite possibilities, all suspended in countless variations of night and day because they cannot find Orion in the sky. tell me a dream, where our breaths are not the hollow staccato hiccups failing to reach our throats as we try to breathe, tell me a dream of how all this, and love too, will ruin us)

day 1

this summer there is rupture in the air.
it was spring when you left, and now
there is a gaping wound in the sky the size of my lung
gasping for air.

i should be glad,
i should be glad that
nights are no longer counted in shot glasses
of silences, or feel the emptiness that crawled onto our skin
as we undressed wordlessly.
my eye on the ceiling, your hands on my body.
i count the seconds
between each intake of our breaths to pass the time.

at night, the quiet
was a perennial plant that bloomed relentlessly,
inside me. a crawling uncontained mass spiralling
out of control in my heart.
every small exhale you felt,
was the choked-up struggle
of a lung desperately trying to breathe.

this summer there is rupture in the air,
it was spring when you left, and now
the sky ruptures itself from the seams
as it learns to breathe again.

day 2 - a poem about a subject in which i know nothing of

Image

i think i have learnt more about love when iโ€™m in pain
then when iโ€™m not.

love, from my mother was so sharp, it bleeds every time
the lights go out. when iโ€™m in darkness, i see
the shape of her hand, and the edge of her palm as it descends
when there is no light to diffuse
the shadows away. because in darkness, shadow is all there is.

love, from my father was a word
i cannot comprehend. individual sounds and letters, that felt
like the stray cereal pieces that would fall out of a box
when you make breakfast in the morning. silent, they sit
waiting for an interpretation for their arrangement
when there might none, when there might one. when there might be,
none.

you see, i write about summer, i write about the sun, because every summer i get drunk on how the sun burns everything in its glory,
how in summer, the world burns (with) me.
i think
i have learnt more about love when Iโ€™m in pain, then when iโ€™m not
because i have never tasted a love that didnโ€™t scorch me raw.
leaving me with a bone-dry thirst burning in my veins.

day 3.
some days i think we're destined to die, my love
some nights i think we're going to live forever. your hands on
my face, your lips on my lips, your hands on my thighs, my fingers in your hair.
i dream about how
we could live forever if we kept exchanging our inhales and matching our exhales
the same way the moon rises and the sun sets.

i write about love like i'm skinny dipping at midnight, drunk on gin and numb to my bones.
letting the waves crash over my body, again and again feeling the gravity of a strange
planet pulling my limbs into an orbit dictated by a force outside of my control.

i write about love like a forest in bushfire season, waiting for the sun to strike, for that curl of smoke
that sends the whole forest into incineration.
love is a birthday wish you make in secret -
want and possession, desire and confession
love is a magician's trapdoor everyone can see, except me
when the object vanishes i am left in wordless awe.
i love magic because it gives me the illusion that what i see isn't
all there is. but you left me in a dream yesterday, and i woke up
in a manic panic.
where is the trapdoor?
you left me, and this time i'm unsure if i opened the door
or if it was already open when you came

day 4.

Image

i want to plant a garden with you,
dig our fingers into the mineral-rich soil
and breathe in the earth as it fills our lungs
with its gentle scented embrace.

i'll stop making greenhouses with drift wood, salvaged
from storms. timber rotted with seawater, mosaics of sun-logged glass the moon had discarded
found on shores at dawn to stitch together an eternal summer that did not exist.

i want you to plant a garden with me,
guide my hands as we cover the seeds with soil,
water and watch as the sun flit through our hands
and hair. plant basil with me, kiss me in a sunlit apricity
where spring is lemony thyme, a tangible sweetness
to plant on my lips and something to savour for years to come.

poem #4 is *chef's kiss* ! <3 your word choice and imagery makes me want to melt into sugar syrup - it's absolutely scrumptious to read! Especially love "timber rotted with seawater, mosaics of sun-logged glass the moon had discarded" and "kiss me in sunlit apricity where spring is lemony thyme"! Keep up the incredible poetry! <333

day 5.

in my youth,
i looked for love on the sharpest blades and brightest candles,
knowing they burnt me and bled me dry but what does it matter to a girl
with nothing to lose, and the whole universe at her disposal.
hope is a foolish illusion for those wounded by reality, i'm told
and history sits like a sedated whisper etched on the insides of my wrists,
a hated family heirloom that re-enacts its age-old curse every time i am touched.

even so, for you
i would run a fool's errand
and gladly believe this time the story ends
differently.

day 6 - a love letter

3am, your car radio is playing some song about love
it's the witching hour and i am at my softest.
in the dark, i let the moon illuminate
the underbelly of
a hidden softness etched into the marrow of my bones.
i show you these brittle cartilages of tenderness and act as if
this act of unwrapping myself
is like opening a candy i bought off the shelf at kmart
i am so afraid you will kill me and leave me to bleed the ocean dry
and this time, i won't make it back to shore again.

3:15am, the chorus of the song is playing,
and it's saying something about a boy and a girl.
you hold my hand, and we conjure mythologies
for stars lightyears away, and chart constellations across the sky.
ignoring our own odysseys,
a damning prophecy, we wilfully re-enact because
pain is a comfort we've grown accustomed to.
to depart would mean we become our own executioners
to guillotine a past that houses us still. and darling, our hands
still shake when we wake in the morning so how do we cut
something that's bone-deep in our bodies.
tell me something i don't know, tell me how all this and love too,
will be our salvation instead of damnation.

Spoiler! :
this poem is about learning to trust and learning to be vulnerable again after trauma or a bad relationship. the difficulty in accepting that to love again, means reopening yourself up to the possibility of getting hurt, horribly, again. coming to acceptance with this potentiality and still go through with this risk. i read somewhere that you can only grow if you are vulnerable, the same way new leaves are soft when they first grow from a branch. if you do not leave yourself vulnerable and open, how will you ever learn and grow?

a second part of the poem is about how we go about fulfilling our worst fears. it's the whole saying of you attract what you fear most, of how Oedipus in attempting to avoid his fate ends up fulfilling it. in the process of running away from what we fear the most, the fear propels us to make choices and decisions that is fuelled by the fear and not by us. it made me think of generational trauma, and abuse. how the only way to break it is by becoming aware of it, gaining knowledge of why it happens, how it's passed on and is re-enacted each generation and with this knowledge comes how to stop it. the amount of work healing takes far outweighs the amount of work to simply carry on something harmful because we've grown accustomed to it.

Spoiler! :
I have been loving every moment of this thread so far! The way that you combine literal, simple descriptions with abstract and beautiful and incredibly poetic imagery is just - *mwah*. It makes your poems feel so balanced.

in the dark, i let the moon illuminate
the underbelly of
a hidden softness etched into the marrow of my bones.

asldkfjsdfj this is TOO GOOD.

Also I loved being able to read your thought process behind poem 6; it makes me appreciate the poem at an even deeper level. Keep up the fabulous poeting!

day 7 - i out myself with a coffee order

this morning.
9:01 am, coconut milk, black espresso
my usual walk to work
i'm late.
sunlight on the pavement
water underfoot, there is a baby seagull
i haven't seen since my ex left.
he squawks, and the feathers catch light
like a wink from the sun.
i lick the bittersweet roast on my lips
it tastes less like an antidote to reality
more like a latte with coconut milk and 0 sugars.

Spoiler! :
@Seirre I've loved reading your poetry thread just as much this napo and has been a huge source of inspiration. <3

day 8

TW: strong language and 18+ content

Spoiler! :
a boy and a girl walks into a dream and they shoot each other through the heart. the bullet pierces their chests and clutter onto the bar floor and everyone is mad.there's blood on the walls, blood on their hands, blood in the drinks, blood everywhere. why should the world go on as normal when there is rupture in my heart, if i bleed, the whole world bleeds with me. it's 2am and i'm dreaming in kaleidoscopic colours whilst we try and fuck each other raw, our bodies are capsules of galaxies lightyear apart but to everyone else we are just two bodies making love. i want to break us apart because what use is love when we're both blind to each other's light. a boy and a girl walks into a bar and they shoot each other through the heart, and this is how the story ends.
