The Letter

phpBB [media]

We all know it — the Genesis Tale. We all learned that before the dawn of time, there was naught within the unfathomable reaches of Oblivion but the Cosmic Egg floating at its centre. That the Goddess hatched from this egg and gave birth to the universe. That we hold our hatching ceremonies on the first day of every year to commemorate our celestial origins. Of course, we all know that this is hardly where the tale ends.

The Goddess divided creation into three realms: Reality, to represent the existence of all that ever was; Dementia, to represent the possibility of all that ever could be; and Mystic, to maintain the balance between the two. She chose Mystic as Her home, and it is from here where She created the beings that now inhabit the realms. It is here where She sired the dragons to act as instruments of Her will and protect all which She created.

Yes, that is where the story concludes. We all know it... but do we all remember the responsibility it infers? We must "protect all which She created". Some protectors we are, then. We have abandoned Reality and Dementia to their fates; we look with contempt upon the refugees from the increasingly hostile Dementia, barely tolerating their presence, and none of our race have even travelled to Reality in centuries, save for the foolish children who had triggered the American Calamity.

We have neglected our divine roles, and the other realms are suffering the consequences. Dementia and Reality are becoming ever more unstable, and soon, their spatial and temporal integrity will be lost entirely. The two realms will collide, and Mystic will be torn asunder with them.

Yet all is not lost. You are reading this letter because you can help alter the current course. You might think you have no reason to heed this warning, that these claims are proposterous, but stop for a moment and consider the news. Realise that there have been too many dimensional anomalies lately for nothing to be wrong. You might not understand how you are expected to make a difference, but only so much can be revealed via indirect communication. It is a significant leap of faith to make, but you would not have been contacted if you were thought incapable of grasping the gravity of the present state of affairs. Send your reply to the return address, and you will receive in due time another letter containing the particulars of a meeting to inform you of the full extent of the situation.

Our interference and abstinence has plunged the universe into disaster. Our kind has led all life down the road to its doom, but the future is never certain — any outcome can be averted, as long as there are those who dare to try. We have lost the way, but we are still dragons! It is our sacred duty to safeguard the balance of the three realms. We cannot afford to fail and bring about the end of all that our Goddess loves. Now is the time to redeem ourselves and fulfill our purpose. Let us cast aside our doubts and answer the divine call! Let us take action and neglect our duty no longer!

Overview

This storybook is the spiritual successor to Dragons, created by Cynder. It is set several decades after the events that transpired in Reality, although this translates to several centuries in terms of time in Mystic. It is only loosely based off the original story, relying mostly on the created universe, rather than the plot and characters.

As before, the story will start in Mystic and take place predominantly in Reality. You don't need to have read any of the posts for the first SB to participate in this one, for reasons already stated. There is a clearly structured storyline with a predetermined ending, but rest assured that there will be plenty of opportunities to employ your creativity and plan individual subplots.

The lore is pretty heavy in some places and barely defined in others, so don't be afraid to ask questions or make suggestions. There is even a custom soundtrack in play! Yes, each of your characters will be getting a unique theme, but all tracks come from a specific source with the same composer, so you can't make any requests. I'll be talking with each of you to find a theme you like. (If you happen to recognise any of the tracks, please don't reveal their origin to anyone but me. I'd like for them to be associated with the events of this story, not another.)

Finally, when it comes to character creation, there are certain restrictions to keep in mind, especially regarding the affinity combination (that mechanic is quite complex, I'm not gonna lie), but you're otherwise free to do as you like. The setting won't be important for now, so I'll rather focus on the lore behind the dragons. Don't worry, as I'll, again, communicate all of this to you in the Discord server and DT. I hope you enjoy getting started!

Dragons and Power

As we've established already, Dragons hail from Mystic. They are quadrupedal, omnivorous apex predators who live in a complex society, though not as massive as that of humans. Even though dragons are oviparous reptiles, they are endothermic and regulate their own body temperatures physiologically and magically. All dragons have wings and tails (for a total of six limbs), but the body tones and features vary. They have slit pupils and possess limited night vision, except where it's otherwise noted to be better. They are creatures of land, sea, and air, so even Earth dragons can fly and even Fire dragons can swim.

When they are young adults, dragons are generally about 5.5 metres (18'4") in length, 3 metres (9'10") in height (4 metres [13'2"] if the wings are raised), and 1.5 metres (5') in width with a wingspan of 4.4 metres (14'8"). These are roughly the dimensions we'll be using for medium-sized dragons, but certain varieties are much larger or slightly smaller. Buildings are constructed to accommodate the largest of dragons, who far exceed these measurements, so draconic architecture makes use of ample negative space and curved styles to allow for comfortable movement.

Draconic society is organised into city states, and all our characters will hail from and live in the same one. Modern technology is present and functions through Power, not electricity. The extent of this is one of those relatively undefined areas, so I strongly encourage you to come up with ideas and pitch them to me. I'll obviously be happy to answer any questions you have, after which I'll share my answer/s with the others via both mediums. But, as an example, telecommunication and data storage rely on enchanted tablets, through which the former projects and receives telepathic communication and awareness, and in which the latter stores data for recovery upon Power activation.

Now, Power is this universe's version of "mana", if you're familiar with the term. To employ magic, dragons must utilise Power. This is exhaustable, which is a problem, as you've probably noticed that Power is needed for essentially everything. Luckily, our dragons are battle-ready, so they know how to conserve Power. They naturally generate Power over time, so there's no need to worry about potions or any such rubbish.

Power is used in their daily lives for things like flying (did you really think dragons could be as fortified as they are and still fly naturally?) and communicating telepathically. The whole story of reading minds through eye contact is partially true; in reality, it simply makes it more cost-effective in terms of Power usage. Therefore, a dragon can easily read most humans' minds from afar, while having a human gaze into their eyes poses no risk of mental invasion.

Dragons are sometimes known for casting glamours, and in the case of ours, they most certainly can. Glamours constitute anything from suggestion to greater illusions, but these only apply to non-draconic species, with varying degrees of success. For dragons to manipulate each other, they need to speak each others' true names.

A dragon's true name is something they guard jealously, and so it is not known publicly. Only a dragon's parents — having named them — and those they deem worthy know their true name. To everyone else, they are known by a chosen name: a compound word consisting of the format [Modifier][subject], such as "Skymaw". A chosen name holds no power over a dragon, but if a dragon knows another's true name, they can invade the other's mind more easily and resist being expelled. Clan names are too shared to see much use outside initially forcing a telepathic conversation.

The only dragon whose name is commonly known is the Goddess. She is the monotheistic deity of the dragons' only accepted religion, and is therefore considered the only "true" god. Besides being credited with creating the universe, the dragons also believe that their kind was once weak and uninteresting, but were blessed by the Goddess to become the powerful and elemental beings they are today.

Elemental Affinities

There are five universal classes that govern the application of Elemental Power: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. For each of these classes, there are three alignments that determine its nature: forward, reverse, and transverse. The forward alignment represents the class in its true form, the reverse alignment represents the class' polar opposite, and the transverse alignment represents the class in a modified state. As a result, there are fifteen affinities through which Elemental Power can be exercised.

Many of the magical species hailing from Dementia posses affinities of any combination, but for the dragons of Mystic, there are certain limitations that restrict these possibilities. This is because each of the classes fit into two cycles — one inferior/generating (Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood), and one superior/overcoming (Wood → Earth → Water → Fire → Metal → Wood) — which then cause inherited affinities to influence each others' alignments. As such, dragons must choose their mates carefully, for certain affinities (reverse-aligned ones especially) carry certain stigmas. Of course, the classes themselves have particular associations and expectations from society, so generalisation cannot be avoided (fantastic racism for the win!).

Below are brief introductions to the classes, followed by a more detailed description of each affinity. The affinities will be addressed in order of alignment, namely forward, transverse, and reverse. Each affinity has its own set of elemental abilities.

Wood

Dragons belonging to the class of Wood are associated with the concepts of life and death, as well as the force of nature. They tend not to mingle with dragons of other classes, and are picky about their company even within their own class. When combined with their great diversity, this results in the impression that they are eccentric and contrarian. Their statures are generally smaller than those of other classes, so they're erroneously considered useless and burdensome to most of society.

Wood-aligned dragons are naturally independent and self-sufficient, which only exarcebates the common opinion of them. However, given the way they're treated, they don't believe they have much reason to treat dragons of other classes with anything besides indifference or barely conceiled hostility anyway. They can be fiercely protective and loyal, but also wholly uninterested in interpersonal relations. Generalising a Wood-aligned dragon is ultimately futile, and this unpredictability is yet another turn-off for the rest of society.

Spoiler! :
Wood

Wood dragons (not to be confused with Wood-aligned dragons, which refers to all dragons in the class) are closely linked to the natural world. In fact, their physical appearance and attributes are determined by the closest mammal at their moment of hatching. Their size and build proportionally matches the mimicked mammal, and though they can be all shades of green and brown, the mammal's colour scheme may also be present. Wood dragons have bark-like scales in terms of texture, though they may also sport fur. They have regular claws and teeth — fangs only if the mimicked mammal is a carnivore. Any distinguishing features like antlers, horns, ears, etc. depend on the mimicked mammal. The acuity of their senses and swimming capabilities also match that of their mammal, although their wings remain relatively consistent, with decent wings for standard flight.

Unsurprisingly, the personalities of these dragons are also based off the mammal they mimic, so a dragon associated with a wolf would be playful and protective, whereas a dragon associated with a tiger would be aggressive and solitary. Even so, they are not to be underestimated, as they are infinitely more intelligent than mere animals, and their acquired attributes are always practical for survival. They also possess abilities that complement their team mates, in the sense that they can expend Power to augment strength or boost vitality in either their allies or themselves. They could not be called "wood" dragons if they did not exercise some control over flora, which is why they can expend Power to manipulate plant growth, for better or for worse.

Spoiler! :
Ghost

Ghost dragons are very much alive, even though they appear otherworldly. Their bodies are long and very slender, and their small, soft, slighly luminous scales encompass all shades of grey and dark shades of blue and purple. Their seemingly fragile build is contrasted by their very long and sharp claws and fangs, their bone-like horns and crest, the spikes on their tail, and their ominously glowing eyes. Even in flight, their tattered wings make it seem like ghost dragons glide through the air. They have excellent sight and hearing to boot, so they are rarely caught off guard. However, they aren't exactly acrobatic, and they're especially hapless in the water.

It is quite difficult for most dragons to trust their seemingly spectral brethren. Reconciling with their appearance is already a challenge, but when they can expend Power to become intangible, turn invisible, and manipulate objects telepathically, it is nigh-impossible not to suspect them of some manner of misdeed. Whether as a cause or result of this stigma, ghost dragons are brooding and solitary. Nevertheless, they still seek out company every now and then, but most tend not to appreciate their dark humour and mischievous tendencies.

Spoiler! :
Decay

There is nothing appealing about a decay dragon. Their smooth and somewhat slimy, odorous skin is black and any dark or sickly shade of green, yellow, brown, and purple. Paste that onto a slender body, and you have what looks like a walking corpse. There is nothing spectacular about their claws and teeth, and their simple horns are either curved or straight. Unlike most dragons, their tongues are forked; while this grants them outstanding taste and smell, it's also unnerving to watch. Their wings are torn, making flight and swimming arduous.

Even a decay dragon's magical abilities are off-putting. Being the reverse of wood dragons, they can expend Power to diminish the strength and drain the vitality of their enemies. They can also generate and spew a putrid fluid from their mouths. Literally all other types of dragons find decay dragons absolutely disgusting, and until very recently, the custom was to abandon the eggs of expected decay dragons outside cities. Some individuals long to be accepted by society, but most embrace defiance and mutual contempt as their shields.

Fire

Fire-aligned dragons are admired by most of their race for their awesome power and daring spirit. This makes it very easy for them to assume influential and authoratative positions in society, and since they boast excellent leaderships skills, they excel in such roles. However, they are just as often engaged in sport and battle, where they enjoy equally great success.

The entire class is known for its ambition, pride, and choleric temperament. Insulting one of these dragons is rarely a good idea, and do they hold grudges. When treated well and provided with ample love and support, Fire-aligned dragons are easily tolerated. Despite being self-absorbed, they can be generous and loyal to their allies, and may even be persuaded to have mercy on their enemies (though they'd still prefer to unleash their wrath upon any who provoke them).

Spoiler! :
Fire

Large, lean, and simply majestic, fire dragons are by far the most famous variety throughout all of the universe. Their vibrant shades of red, orange and yellow (sometimes also green, blue, or purple) are beautiful to behold, and it's difficult not to admire their hard, smooth scales, long claws and sharp teeth, and impressive horns (curved or straight) and spikes along the spinal ridge and/or tail. Their wings are large and imposing, and they can sustain flight for a considerable amount of time. Their only drawbacks are that they're poor at swimming and possess average senses overall, but it's easy to make the public forget about that.

Fire dragons have some of the most spectacular and powerful abilities. Being able to conjure fire, summon light, and amplify sound, they make for beloved teammates and hated foes. With their highly heat-resistant scales, they often leap into the fray with a blaze of glory. They embody the ideals for which dragons are known in Western Reality: strength, pride, ferocity, and majesty. They expect to be adored, and even when piqued, the sheer intensity of their anger, resentment, and pettiness causes onlookers to gawk. A fire dragon truly is a being like no other.

Spoiler! :
Wind

Where fire dragons are the classical representations of might and valour, wind dragons are the picture of regality and beauty. (Compare masculinity and femininity, if you will.) They are somewhat smaller and sturdier than their fiery cousins, but they make up for their less imposing stature with the feathers of any colour and shade that cover their wings, crests, and tails. The rest of their body is covered in small scales, also of any shade of any colour. They possess a large upper jaw and smaller lower jaw, resembling those of avians, but they have mouths filled with teeth, not beaks. Their claws are somewhat talon-like, and their sight is simply outstanding. Their large wings allow for sustained and fast flight, and they have no difficulty swimming in water.

Wind dragons are more graceful than most of the other kinds, and expend Power to increase their agility even further. They seek any advantage over their fellows, and so can forecast the weather and manipulate air currents to their ends. They tend to be even-tempered and adept at solving disputes, maintaining a sense of partiality despite their considerable self-pride. As such, they are also more tolerant and accepting of others' differences. Though not inherently wise, they are willing to learn and believe in diligence and patience.

Spoiler! :
Void

If ever there was a type of dragon to exude authority and confidence, it would be the void dragon. Although the fire dragons' reverse, they share a great many similarities — the size and build of their bodies, scales, claws, teeth, and wings are virtually identical. The differences, however, are significant: void dragons are almost entirely black, occasionally accented with very dark shades of grey, blue, and purple. Their horns are also large and either curved or straight, but these are elegant in their simplicity; no crests or additional spikes are present. Furthermore, void dragons have excellent hearing and outstanding night vision. They are highly resistant to cold and have no qualms with swimming.

The high degree of similarity between fire and void dragons, combined with the prominent differences, results in an intense rivalry. Void dragons are quietly confident and certain of their superiority, yet somehow, draconic society finds this more abrasive than the fire dragons' brazen vanity. As such, they tend to be bitter and blunt, as well as aloof and distrusting. When pursuing their own endeavours, they've learned to dismiss or overcome any resistance with reason and composure, unintentionally feeding the cycle of discontent. Even their expenditure of Power to conjure frost, summon darkness, and muffle sound is interpreted as antagonistic.

Earth

The class of Earth is a mixed bag. Sometimes, Earth-aligned dragons are stoic and reserved, but they could just as easily be cheerful and friendly. Nevertheless, all tend to be grounded and dependable (no pun intended), and value a good work ethic. Though they are practical and reliable workers, they also make for studious and thorough scholars.

Most dragons get along well with Earth-aligned dragons, but they themselves display a tendency toward close-mindedness and therefore judge ostracised individuals and groups more readily. Stubbornness is a common trait, and since humility and pride are about equally dispersed, it's often difficult to change their minds.

Spoiler! :
Earth

Earth dragons are walking powerhouses. Very large and very robust, facing one is positively terrifying. Their scales are large, rough, and hard, and one look at their claws and teeth, though they aren't particularly long or sharp, is enough to make one tremble. Earth dragons sport massive horns and/or crests, and the rocklike protrusions on their spinal ridge and tail make them look like walking boulders. (The dull shades of grey, blue, red, and brown further emphasise this.) Their strength and fortitude are the only advantages they need, so their flight and senses are average overall.

To assume any given earth dragon is dim-witted is a big mistake. True, they expend Power to levitate rocks and intimidate their enemies, but they do so strategically and can also augment their resistance or the resistance of others as needed. Their strategies are simple and usually effective. They're the same in their daily lives, really. Some could therefore seek out more excitement, whereas others might prefer their lives plain.

Spoiler! :
Sand

Sand dragons were made to live underground, and their bodies reflect this. They're long and serpentine, lacking any horns or spikes and with wings that can fold tightly against them. Their scales are small, smooth, and compact to prevent anything from getting lodged between them. Their claws and teeth are small and durable, which aren't much good for battles, but excellent for burrowing. They're coloured light shades of brown and yellow, and they have an outstanding sense of sight, hearing, and touch, with remarkable night vision to boot. They can even swim quite well, but they're rather pathetic at flying.

Sand dragons are far from defenceless, contrary to popular belief. They can expend Power to summon dust and manipulate terrains, and they can invoke planetary wrath as a way to attack their enemies. This makes them crafty, but once their tricks have been figured out, they're vulnerable to physical attack. Sand dragons prefer their own company, but are happy to spend time with individuals they find intriguing or entertaining. They don't much mind what others think of them, which makes other dragons think they're oblivious — a hilarious notion, considering how observant they are.

Spoiler! :
Crystal

Where earth dragons are plain and dull, crystal dragons are the exact opposite. Though all are large and lean, their rough and lustrous or glossy scales may feature vibrant or dark shades of any colour. Their claws and teeth are of the same quality as their earthen cousins', and they are equally decorated with horns, crests, and protrusions (crystalline, of course) on their spinal ridges and tails. Crystal dragons don't need to be more than adequate at swimming and flying to look impressive, so they have no need of above-average senses either.

Although crystal dragons are the most appealing and socially accepted of all reverse-aligned dragons, they are still the reverse of earth dragons. Instead of augmenting resistance, they expend Power to diminish it. But that, at least, is still a useful ability, and the powerful glamours they can cast and photospectometric beams they can launch do make them more colourful in both life and battle. Their personalities are as varied as they come, though, encompassing the full spectrum of humility and vanity, friendliness and meanness, charity and greed, etc. Any individual can find a crystal dragon with whom they get along.

Metal

Something about Metal-aligned dragons makes some other dragons feel uneasy. It might be the intensity with which they engage in activities, be it socialising, working, or fighting. Their personalities could be too polarising (that one wasn't intended either, I swear!), or the expression and magnitude of their feelings too great. Whatever it is, Metal-aligned dragons have an unmistakeable presence about them because of it.

Keeping this in mind, dragons of the Metal class are never boring, no matter their personality. They are best suited to careers where their energy can be put to good use, and where their colleagues won't find it tiring. These dragons are some of the most intelligent, though, so anything they do must stimulate them in some way or another. Fortunately, they can find ways to enjoy even menial activities. Of course, this simply adds to their oddity, for many.

Spoiler! :
Metal

One look at a metal dragon shows that they were destined for feats of strength. They are large and robust, with large, smooth, lustrous scales in vibrant (or sometimes dull) shades of metallic colours. Their claws and teeth can be of considerable size and power, or they can be ordinary — whichever it is will determine whether they become warriors or artisans. Their sizeable horns can be curved or straight, and they sometimes have spikes on their tail and/or running down their spinal ridge. They swim and fly just fine. Their only truly extraordinary attribute is their excellent sense of smell.

Metal dragons' roles in society become even more apparent when they expend Elemental Power. They can shape metal and manipulate magnetism, as well as boost the potency of their or others' Power. Befriending them is consequently a better idea than opposing them, but even in the case of the latter, they respect those who display skill. They are creative and innovative, excelling in situations where solutions to problems and puzzles must be found. They offer and keep stimulating company, not bothering with those who fail to interest them.

Spoiler! :
Electricity

Electricity dragons are easily the most cautiously treated of all dragon varieties. They may be small and slender, but their claws and fangs are extermely sharp, and they have moveable spikes everywhere on their bodies. When they aren't moving, one can identify small horns and small, rough, shining scales. Their small wings allow for limited but extremely agile and fast flight, though, so when they are moving, they appear as naught but a vivid white, blue, or yellow blur. They aren't as fast in the water, but swim well enough. Their excellent sight and hearing allows them to respond immediately to any stimuli.

The true threat lies not in their physical abilities, but in their magic. Generating electricity and manipulating electrical currents, electricity dragons wield frightening Power. They can augment their and others' speed too, as if they weren't fast enough already. They're also quick in thought and emotion, which makes them easy to provoke or bore. Unless they find it truly satisfying, electricity dragons are quick to leave one job or activity for the next; regrettably, the same holds true for any kind of relationship. Other dragons do not usually mind, as they easily tire of an electricity dragon's restless nature.

Spoiler! :
Quicksilver

Although the oddest members of the Metal class, quicksilver dragons do not immediately appear quirky. They are of average size and very lean build, possess regular claws and teeth, and have a colour scheme consisting only of vibrant greys and silvers. The differences are noted upon closer inspection: they have smooth, glossy skin, rather than scales, and have visible ears, like some wood dragons — these grant them outstanding hearing. They quite enjoy swimming, being as fast and agile in the water as they are in the air.

Quicksilver and metal dragons co-exist splendidly, despite the reversed alignments. Other dragons do not share the same friendliness. Quicksilver dragons can expend Power to drain magical potency, craft illusions, and manipulate motion perception, which gives them the unfair stigma of being untrustworthy and deceptive. On the contrary, they are weirdly straightforward and honest, even though many believe this to be an act. Some individuals react to this with confusion, while others play this to their advantage, all Metal-aligned dragons being intelligent. But not all of them can deal with the animosity, and for those who are affected, the usual behaviour may indeed become a façade to hide their growing resentment.

Water

The dragons in the class of Water are collectively known as the keepers of wisdom and protectors of knowledge. Though their views on achieving goals may differ, all provide thoughtful advice to those who seek their counsel. They understand that focusing too much on details obscures the bigger picture, and find it frustrating when others ignore them. They appreciate company when it's present, but are equally content when it's not.

Water-aligned dragons, due to their aquatic preferences, often live near or in sufficiently large bodies of water. Being reserved and knowledgeable, others sometimes perceive them as secretive, which they can admittedly be. They can also be manipulative, and while they dislike lying outright, they readily tell half-truths or lie by omission. Nevertheless, dragons tend to trust them, making Water-aligned dragons a common sight in careers like education, philosophy, psychology, and politics.

Spoiler! :
Water

Water dragons are unmistakably meant for an aquatic lifestyle. Their long, serpentine bodies and small, smooth scales make them streamlined for fast, extremely agile underwater movement. Their claws and teeth are ordinairy, and while they lack horns, they may have frills on their face and ridges or fins on their spinal ridge, limbs, and tail. They come in all shades of blue, cyan, green, red, and purple to fit in with their underwater environments. They have excellent sight and hearing both inside and outside water, and they fly and walk perfectly fine.

Being more defensive than offensive, water dragons prefer to nurture rather than fight, expending Power to cleanse toxins from body and nature, and heightening focus for increased efficiency. Of course, they can still manipulate water currents to suit their needs, so they aren't harmless per se. They are cool and collected, and enjoy casual conversation, serious discussion, and thoughtful contemplation all in equal measures. They are far from placid, and harbour great curiosity. It is not uncommon for water dragons to ponder what others are too skeptical even to consider.

Spoiler! :
Blood

Blood dragons sound intimidating even before one has seen them — and they don't look any less intimidating thereafter. Large, robust, and all shades of red, they appear threatening enough without having very long, very sharp claws and fangs. They have smooth, blubbery skin and long necks, as well as whiskers and dorsal and ventral fins (these aren't moveable). Their sense of taste and smell are outstanding underwater, and though average flyers, they are agile and extremely fast while swimming.

With personalities befitting their name and appearance, blood dragons are abrupt and serious. Highly intelligent too, they outmanoeuvre and outwit their opponents and rivals. They can expend Power to transfer any induced condition, in addition to sharing vitality. This can either be to the benefit of allies, or to the detriment of foes. Besides their physical prowess, they can also launch baleful pulses to inflict elemental damage. An acquired taste, it takes a great deal of tolerance and patience to befriend a blood dragon. They may still appear brash, but they will go to great lengths to preserve their relationships.

Spoiler! :
Poison

Equally as aquatic as their cousins, poison dragons are long and slender. An important difference between them and other Water-aligned dragons, though, is that they have scales, not skin. They can also have frills on their face, but they more commonly have straight horns and spikes on their spinal ridge, limbs, and tail. They are either dark shades of black, blue, or purple, or vibrant shades of any colour. Their claws are sharp and their main fangs are hollow and retractable. While not as fast or agile as the other Water-aligned dragons, they are nevertheless faster and more agile than the dragons of any other class. Their sight and taste are also excellent.

Poison dragons are not well-liked. They are irritable and quick-tempered in nature, and vicious and savage in battle. They expend Power to reduce the focus of their foes and spew corrosive venom, but also to exacerbate any inflicted or pre-existing injury. If treated well, they might become friendlier and more obliging towards the cordial individual, but it takes time, as they are naturally suspicious. They hold grudges and resent betrayal, leading many dragons to feel avoiding them is the best solution. Poison dragons are likely to be irked either way.

Character Template

Our characters will be spending the minimal amount of time in Mystic. It will be longer than in the first storybook, but in the context of the storybook's duration, it's going to be relatively short. Familial history is irrelevant, so keep it brief and focus more on social and occupational history. Personality and combat acumen will be the largest focus of this SB, but I'll guide you all through that. Work on your character profile in this pad, if you don't mind, but if it's not possible, feel free to suggest any other means.

Slumber Ceased

phpBB [media]

Sunlight streamed through the windows, illuminating the room of basalt brick. Upon the central dais laid a drake of deep black, his wings extended and draping over the sides to take advantage of the warming rays. It seemed as if he slept, but his eyelids were squeezed shut in a slight frown, as one might see upon the face of someone reluctant to wake. Air slowly escaped through his nose.

The drake extended his drowsy consciousness towards the triangular prism on an end table against the wall to his left, the glyphs depicted on its faces pulsing bright rose. He acknowledged the tug on his mind, causing the glyphs to die down to a soft glow.

The slumbering Light wakes! a voice as powerful yet gentle as a baobab said within his thoughts. Good morning.

Morning, Green, he replied, projecting the thought at the prism. Letters been delivered yet?

Most of them, yes, the voice answered casually. Delivery is being adapted on a case by case basis.

The black drake yawned long and deeply. Why the deviation? He raised a talon to his face and began scratching the sleep from eyes of lapis lazuli.

Swiftshade had a family emergency during the night. I gave him the next few days off.

He opened his eyes, squinting at the sunlight and wiping away the resulting the tears. Yawning again, he rose and flapped his wings, the sun revealing streaks of midnight blue painting their arches. Who’s in his place? He bent down in a half-standing position to stretch his forelegs, afterwards rising and stretching his hindlegs behind him.

Dreamhaze. She’s imitating a postdragon. Most addressees will find their letters before they set out for the day, but others might find theirs only once they return.

He turned in a circle, scanning the panoramic view, and approached the window closest to the prism. He gazed northwards, in the direction of a specific drakaena’s house. I suppose it makes no difference either way, as long as none of them notice the deliveries.

Would you have preferred if we had waited another day?

This arrangement is perhaps less ideal, but it will suffice. The dragon pulled his wings up and pushed his chest down until he felt and heard two pops in his spine. Looking back in the direction of the house and scratching the straight horns, which pointed back at a forty-five degree angle, on his head, he asked, What about you? Will you be experiencing a family emergency just before our plan is executed?

Modest laughter filled his mind. Emergencies typically cannot be predicted. But if one does occur, then my family will need to make do without me. My loyalty lies with you, Direlight, and my family as well as knows it already.

Direlight smirked, tilting his head to the right to scratch a spot at the base of his one horn more easily. And tonight? Does your Evergreen friendship extend to dinner, too?

Does wine go with cheese? Evergreen countered, chuckling heartily.

He lowered his claw and huffed. I resent your implication.

You expected the conifer and winter metaphor again, didn’t you?

Perhaps.

Your predictability is endearing. Were you going to stay inside and read through another bestiary for most of the day?

For your information, I intend on going out today, he retorted with dignity.

Mmm-hmm. Then enjoy the skating! …And your cherry iceberry.

His long tail swished. You’re insufferable.

Good day to you, too! Also, staring is creepy.

The connection terminated and Direlight disdainfully turned away from the window, snatching the prism in his jaws. He descended via the spiral staircase to the loft, as his room was at the top of the house’s lone tower, and approached one of the two smaller rectangular containers. He slotted the prism into its space on the container and tapped a glyph, causing more glyphs all across the container to glow in unison. It rose off the floor and hovered in place. He turned and descended onto the ground floor via a regular staircase, the container following him and always remaining the same distance above the surface. He stopped in the hallway and tapped the same glyph from before, prompting it to land, the glyphs fading away.

He made for the only room in the house with a door and tapped the glyph depicted on its face, causing the doors to slide open and close once he had entered. All the other rooms had connecting archways, which was rather more convenient, but privacy was best when one visited the lavatory. He soon exited and headed for the kitchen instead, opening the fridge — a large container on the floor, its door functioning just like any other, but sliding open from the top, rather than the side. He retrieved several tuna with his jaws and carried them to the dining room. He settled down onto one of the large pillows next to the table and dropped the fish onto the table's surface, taking his time to enjoy them.

Satisfied with his breakfast, he collected his currency prism from the lounge and slotted that into the container in the hallway, too. He activated the container again and made for the front door, which he opened by placing his claw onto the door and expending Power, his blue irises glowing faintly, almost imperceptibly, as an indication. Once the container had followed him outside, he expended Power to close the door again. He deactivated the container, climbed onto it, grabbed hold using the claw grooves, and took wing.

The day marching steadily to noon, most dragons were already at work, making the airways of Basdan Azarka much less crowded. Direlight hated travelling anytime near dawn or dusk, as it involved avoiding hundreds of other dragons all around.

He lived in one of the less popular residential districts, which meant it would take quite a while to reach the nearest recreational district with a skate park. The non-draconic inhabitants of the ancient stone city frequently complained about the “ridiculous” expansiveness characteristic of any draconic settlement, but eyeing the non-draconic districts in the distance, Direlight couldn’t fathom how the other races were content with living in such tall structures.

They were only moderately taller than draconic buildings, to be fair, since the smaller races needed less space, but they nevertheless built floor upon floor upon floor, always heading up or down, as opposed to sideways. He would complain about their vertical expansion as much as they complained about the dragons’ horizontal expansion, had it been necessary for him to occupy and conduct his business in such structures. Dragons required much space and built their cities accordingly; if anything, the non-dragons should be happy the city’s council had allowed them inhabit it at all, as many of the other city states had refused, forcing refugees to build their own, often poorly planned, settlements.

He had nothing against the refugees, of course, and supported the council's decision to grant asylum. Even so, it had to be said that the prominent collection of skywards sneaking buildings made for an unappealling interruption of the otherwise evenly spreading structures that comprised the rest of the city. Still, he supposed it was considerably less convenient for the non-dragons to traverse the streets and roads. While they offered plenty of space, the small creatures clearly perceived them as never-ending. Their journeys must be tedious, moving along without feeling the sun's heat and the wind's refreshing breath.

About ten minutes later, he finally reached the recreational district, formed of many buildings of varying sizes and purposes. Dragons and non-dragons alike visited it, though they typically kept to separate structures. As such, two skate parks stood adjacent two each other. Direlight swooped down to Frore Flavours, a smallish building next to the larger of the two parks. There wasn’t any queue — only a nearby dragon on a sidewalk dais, chewing with maw agape on a ball of flavoured ice — so after landing and setting his container to follow, he approached the structure.

“Direlight the Daring returns!” the blue Water drakaena behind the counter proclaimed cheerfully. “Just a moment.” She turned and opened the freezer behind her.

“Actually, I don’t think I’ll be taking the usual today.”

She looked over her shoulder. “Oh? Then what are you in the mood for?”

He reflected on it for a moment. “Pinefruit.”

“Feeling tropical, huh?” She dug out a yellow metal sphere and held it out. “Here you go!”

He opened his container and pulled an identical but uncoloured sphere from it. He tapped a glyph with his gripping claw, causing half of the sphere to slide away. The vendor did the same and tipped the ball of yellow ice into his. After stashing it away, Direlight then pulled his cur-prism from its slot, adjusted the rings to the correct amount, and placed it on the payment sigil on the counter. He then pressed the glyph on the top face of the cylinder, and it flashed.

“Thanks for your business, as always!” the drakaena said. “Enjoy the iceberry, and show those amateurs how it’s done!”

“Naturally.”

Nightgaze I

The birds sang their obnoxious chorus again that morning. As they did yesterday. As they did the day before that. I lifted my head from my paws and sent a hissing growl their way through the window. They stopped. I got up, the powerful gravity of my bed pulling me back, sluggishly pulling my paws along the floor. The resistant force of responsibility was stronger. I went along to the living room, where I shook myself awake a little. I moved over to the fridge and lifted its door, reaching for some deer from yesterday. It's not the kind of thing you have for breakfast, but it's filling enough to last you the whole day. After I sated my hunger, I grabbed a prism from the shelf in the living room, built in a similar shape like a beehive. I floated it above my paw, my irises visibly glowing. My father could do it without a single twinkle. But he can't teach that to me anymore.

As I spun it in mid-air, many glyphs appeared, glowing red on each facet. I tapped one. Soon, a sleepy voice resonated inside my head.
Yes... Nightgaze...?
That's my name. Morning, Flame. I smiled a little, and headed over to my couch. I used to sit there with my father. And mother before she left us.
Ah, morning… Flame yawned loudly.
By the Goddess! A little loud!
Sorry drake, can’t help but focus on yawning. Anyways, want me to come by your house, I assume?
As always.
Got it, be there in just a few minutes.
The glyph faded.

I gently replaced the prism. In the far right corner, I saw that triangular prism. I could easily reach it, there were very little things I couldn't reach with my size, but instead, my eyes lit up, and the prism slid out of its hiding place and floated into my open paw. Only one glyph appeared, and I tapped it softly with my talon. The prism opened in half, releasing a tiny ball of light, which floated up before my snout. It suddenly expanded into one screen before my eyes, I could clearly see my reflection. Black scales, brown markings, dull light blue eyes gleaming with exertion of Power. Then, that reflection moulded into my father's portrait. The one he took and placed in the prism before it happened. And everyday I would find new similarities between our appearances. We both already served as rangers, but I was growing into him morally, physically and emotionally. I'm glad he took me in, and not mother.
I withdrew the screen and lowered the ball into the open prism. Upon sensing the ball’s presence, the prism closed. And I lifted it up, placing it in its spot by paw.

It was already time to get going.

I took a couple of paces outside my house, blinded a little by the sun. I managed to distinguish something in the letterbox. A white envelope. My mind filled with curiosity.

“Nightgaze! Whatcha doin’?” Trueflame called to me as he hobbled over to the fence. He sniffed the roses a little just next to fence. Small particles sparkled on the dull light blue petals, like stars on a morning sky. Trueflame only had three paws, and I couldn't stop looking at its remains for days afterwards. One of the monsters from the Rift had taken him by surprise. I wasn’t there to help him. I couldn’t help him.
“Nothing much, the same as always I guess,” I replied, cracking a small smile. You can’t help but like him, Trueflame.
“That letter says otherwise,” the Fire dragon muttered. “A white envelope, haven’t seen those in ages. Don’t show it to anyone else, or they’ll get suspicious.”
“Understood.” I grabbed the envelope in my mouth and dropped it onto the floor in my house. Trueflame was still outside, waiting for me. He seemed to shift on his paws a little. His gaze went everywhere. He seemed uncomfortable.
“What’s up?” I asked. “Something wrong?”
“Tell me, Nightgaze,” Trueflame began. “Do you know what management have decided?”
“To acknowledge they're not doing enough?” I didn't try to hide my bitter tone.
“Ohh… I'll let them tell you,” Trueflame shook his head. “I don't want to be the bearer of bad news.”
It didn't take a genius to figure out something was wrong. I shrugged it off as, walking out beyond the perimeter of my white fence, I locked all three bolts on my door.
“Let’s get going,” I uttered, Flame nodded in response, smiling warmly.

We trotted towards the outskirts, where the rangers had their headquarters. The village was the icon of bucolic sights, as the fluctuating land stretched smoothly, soon easing into woodlands and forests which housed thousands of creatures, local and alien. The houses of the village were not remarkable in any way, they were just your average white dragon houses, built to size for every dragon in the village. There was just the large brown building found towards the village outskirts which stood out, and that’s exactly where Flame and I were heading. The other dragons gazed after us, mostly me I’d like to assume. I never paid them much attention, just a waste of time. Already know what they’re thinking: “Look it’s him again”.

We walked into the headquarters as casually as ever. The doors were nice to go through, minimal amount of Power was needed to be exerted to open them, unlike others in the village. These doors gave you some sense of privilege when you walked through them. Everyone felt different today. There was a strange tension in the air, as I felt draconic eyes just stare at me walking past them. When I looked at him, Flame would only give me a weak smile.

Oh boy, what a ride I was in for.

We arrived in the meeting room, as we usually do, to discuss what we’re doing with our leader. The big Fire drake stood waiting in the corner for us. He looked more blank than usual.
“Nightgaze,” he pointed out. It’s as if Flame didn’t exist to him.
“Sir,” I responded, bowing my head a little. “What’s our job today?”
“You mean Trueflame’s job.”
I blinked a little and took a moment to process what he just said. I raised an eyebrow.
“How do you mean?” I demanded. “What about me?”
“The other rangers and I have found that you do not suit your role anymore. Your father's death has caused you to become more emotional. That's why Trueflame was hurt, correct?”

And that pierced my heart. It opened all sorts of wounds. Old ones, new ones. I was ready to burn that place to the ground. Flame began to protest.
“No, it wasn't-”
“It's not up for debate. We have decided what is best for our organisation and the health of those in it.”
“And what exactly have you done about it?” I questioned, glaring at the drake before me.
“You've been moved to DR, where you'll be assisting Hotfume in sorting out files and sorting out arguments between rangers.” There was a short pause there. We only stared intently into each others’ eyes. “Understood?”
“Yes, Boss.” In that same sentence, I was gone. I left the room and headed outside of the headquarters, almost tempted to just smash through the doors.
Father would be so disappointed… Working in Draconic Resources is more of a punishment compared to what I used to do… I thought, leaning against the wall of the tall building. Flame joined me, placing a wing on my neck.
“Don't worry Night, you can always work your way up again,” he smiled clemently.
“I guess,” I replied. “But it'll take ages before they change their minds. I might as well be stuck there for the rest of my life.”
Flame shook his head.
“Wrong. The Boss is more lenient than you think. You are Earthwing’s son as well; they'd be fools to keep you in there for long.”
“They are fools, Flame,” I hissed. “That's why they did this to me. This job is what gave me a purpose. But they destroyed any chance of coming close to Father's achievements!”
The drake shook his head, maintaining his tone.
“You can’t change who they are, just go with the flow, Nightgaze. Trust me, it won’t be as painful as it seems.”

I cooperated and worked for DR as they wanted me to. I won’t hide it, I hated every moment of sitting in that office. I felt so bloody useless...
I returned home more knackered than you could imagine. I threw a glance at the letter on the floor. It had my name and address.
Let's take a look.
