This formula has me stumped! Could somebody please explain the steps and what goes on in between (if there is something)? Note- I don't know how to do subscripts, so bear with me!

x2 + 2x -a(a + 2)
=(x - a)[x + (a + 2)]
=(x - a)(x + a + 2)

Mostly it's how they get from step 1 to step 2 that confuses me. Thanks in advance!

Step 2 is a typo. It's not equivalent. It should be:

=(x - a)[x + (a + 2)]

So yeah. Good eye! :D

Fixed.

Thing is, I don't see how they get from step 1 to step 2. I mean, the 2x vanishes!

Could somebody please explain that?

Oh! So that's what you wanted to know. :P

Here's the proof! Towards the end, I did a little substitution to make it more apparent, but you don't have to do that. I just did it for convenience.

If you don't understand a step (which is possible!) bug me again and I'll try to show you. :)

algebra sucks....that subject is a burden to almost all of the students......
think of a way to get what you want

without giving up more than what you have....
