Im working on a computer program called Cognitive Tutor.. we use it in class alot. I ran into this problem

Solve for K

hq-mk=ks+nt

I can solve it to this point

k=(-hq+nt)/(-m-s)

The program says to factor out -1 from the denominator ... but when I do it shows up the same and says I still need to do it.... Im confused and wondering if I missed something or if its the program! ???

I did the problem... I know you've gotten very far, but maybe if I show you all my steps, you'll see it with fresh eyes again?

hq - mk = ks + nt

Add -nt to both sides:

hq - mk - nt = ks + nt - nt

hq - mk - nt = ks

Add mk to both sides:

hq - mk - nt + mk = ks + mk

hq - nt = ks + mk

Factor out k on second side:

hq - nt = k(s + m)

Divide both sides by (s + m):

(hq - nt)/(s + m) = k(s + m)/(s + m)

k = (hq - nt)/(s + m)

So it seems like I got a fairly positive answer.

Looking at your answer, I see you have (-m - s). Instead of keeping it that way, factor out negative one from both sides and I think you might get my answer.

Hope that helps! :D
