You need to give us more details about the assignment in order for us to help.

A subject? For a paper...an article? A subject for an interview? A current event?

Er, Dan's right...what exactly is the assignment?

OK. My teacher wants us to write our opinions on a current event. But I did find a good topic (immigration laws). Only problem is that it is a hot topic at my school, so I will need back-up issues in case everyone uses the same idea.

...sounds good.

Are you writing an editorial then? Or is supposed to be fact-based reporting there? (I assume the former, as you said 'opinion'.)

But immigration laws themselves aren't exactly a current event, are they? The demonstrations in the Western United States and such are the current event, yes?

You could definately write about the walk-outs. That may be a hot topic too, but if you argue it, you can definatley make it unique.

A thought:

The last movement that was nearly as big as this current one was the civil rights issues, back in the sixties. Many people are marching, some of them legal citizens and others who aren't. With that said, is the immigration issue a question of what is legal or of basic human rights?

Focusing on a specific aspect of the immigration law debate for your editorial (I'm assuming it's an editorial) would be a good idea, since it's such a broad subject. You could talk about how the walk-outs are affecting schools (my school district lost about $20,000 in unexcused absences) or about how some people are mad that the protestors are waving Mexican flags. If you pick something specific, then it's less likely that someone will have the same topic.
