I'm trying to study Emily Dickinson... be afraid.

Sooo... I'm sure I'll get more questions as I continue my research, but my first question:

When we see a hyphen, how is that to be read? What kind of pause is it? Perhaps I'm looking at this too literally, but I am curious.

When you say "hyphen" do you mean, well, a hyphen, or an em dash? Because they're two very different punctuation marks (but very similar in appearance).

Just so you know the difference, a hyphen is this: "-", like, "The blue-green sky."

And an em dash is "", as in, "She laughed — what a day."

Hyphens aren't read as pauses, but em dashes are. If that helps.
"He yanked himself free and fled to the kitchen where something huddled against the flooded windowpanes. It sighed and wept and tapped continually, and suddenly he was outside, staring in, the rain beating, the wind chilling him, and all the candle darkness inside lost."

Em Dashes, short for Emily Dashes. I think.

Emily Dashes is a nice name for someone.
You shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, instead, you should read every single book to see what every book is about before you even come close to judging its viability.
