I have a character who has multiple personality disorder. She developed them when she was very young (maybe around age 9). She was taken in at an early age by the government to be trained as an assassin/soldier, and went through a lot of torture in the process. Now, as for her other personalities, one was created as a way of fulfilling her repressed desires, since she's not one to take too many chances or walk over people. The next personality was created to deal with her job, specifically the killing part. This personality takes over when she has to kill or when being physically hurt, and is depicted as enjoying the deed.

I need help making this convincing instead of some "slap on trait". Does the way she developed them make sense? Is it possible for the person to be aware of the other personlaities, or the personalites to be aware of each other? Do you know of any side affects to the disorder other than shifting personalities? I'm doing research as well, but anything you could share would be great. Thanks.

Hey! I hope Im not too late..i guess i am cause this was written in 2009.
But Id like to answer your questions and if you've already have them answered, then ignore this.
Does the way she developed them make sense?

Well, usually, the character goes through a lot of trauma which as you stated she does in the form of trauma. But, to be quite honest, usually it is sexual trauma. For example, google "sybil" and you'll find a true story about a woman who was sexually molested and tortured by her mother at a very young age and thus, she developed MPD.
Is it possible for the person to be aware of the other personlaities, or the personalites to be aware of each other?

No, it is not possible. When the real person shifts into a personality, he or she goes through "a blank period" meaning he/she has blackouts and is unaware of what is happening or what the other personality is doing until the personality shifts back to the real person. However, the personalities are aware of each other.
Do you know of any side affects to the disorder other than shifting personalities?

Side-effects? Well the person's life basically changed. He/she finds him/herself in places he/she never consciously travelled to. Other people begin noticing changes in the person's behaviour, attitude and even sometimes a slight defect in appearance. This may prevent the person from socialising.
Hope this helps!
