Hello, I'm back! This time, I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about ships, ship crews, pirates and all that fun stuff? I'm writing a pirate-y story and I plan on doing my own research on it, but if anyone has anything they know about sailing/ships/pirates/navigating by stars (it's relevant in the story) and so on and so forth, I'd love to hear anything you have!

Thank you!

Ships! I have those in my novel too. Slightly different because they sail the skies instead of the seas, but no matter :p
I know a bunch of stuff about all this now, but mostly from researching and googling lots of stuff, so I just figured I'll drop some of my bookmarked links in your lap instead of paraphrasing what they say.

http://www.naturalnavigator.com/ has a lot of stuff on navigation in general, including the stars, the sea, and whatnot.

This post goes into some navigational tools and ways of navigating by the stars specifically from ships. It also describes some terms, IIRC.

This site has some as well, and so does http://www.space.com/5849-navigating-stars.html .

Find North Series on YouTube has videos on how to find north by different stars and other celestial objects, as well as some land-based methods.

Of course, that all applies if your ship is navigating its way around Earth. But even if you have your story set in another world, you may still find some methods interesting, and adapt them as necessary (and please make a project thread somewhere and/or link me to the actual thing, 'cause I'd be super interested to read [about] it).

Regarding pirate stuff in general, http://www.thepirateking.com/ is a bit silly in ways but has a lot of resources. http://www.thepiratesrealm.com/index.html and http://www.goldenageofpiracy.org/golden ... piracy.php have a bunch of stuff you may want to look through as well, from references and stories about actual pirates, to types of ships, names of things and positions, and the infamous pirate code.

There's more, but I found the above ones quite helpful, so I leave you with this so far!

Sorry I never replied to this!

Ah, same difference, same difference. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I've definitely been using a lot of these sites for referencing and all that pizazz :)

I have thought a lot about making a project thread - especially since you mentioned it - and I'm definitely interested, but I'm not sure exactly how I'd like to approach it yet. I'll let you know if I do! I'm working on trying to incorporate my own constellations/stars/navigational systems (because it is set in another world) and different lunar/solar cycles and what have you, so if you're still interested I'll try to get one started and link you to it!

Thank you for all your insight and again, sorry for the delay! I'm actually reading your Brilliant and Beautiful Lies right now and I'm super hooked! I love all the world building and development :)

Hope to sea you later! Have a lovely day ^^
