Queenie rolled her eyes and waited for her shot. Skull's big head was in the way. Unfortunately, this gun was probably not powerful enough to get through the brick he had for a brain and the kids.

Finally, Skull shited his weight with his proposition to get going. She squeezed the trigger. Jay hit the ground. She was gone.

Carter knew he'd failed in more ways than one.

He'd been too open, for one. Too much of himself - and he knew most people did not like his true nature, nor did it draw people in to trust. He'd been too romanced by the idea of no one knowing who he was and had let his guard down too much. In hindsight, he should've kept up the act he'd been pulling his whole life. He was noble, respectable, and trustworthy in the eyes of all of his coworkers and peers, and they were right to think that, but he knew it took work to convince them of the truth. He knew certain personalities and dispositions were naturally favored. He knew not everyone appreciated and openly calculating mind.

The few moments Carter spent sitting on the picnic blanket by himself, he reassessed the situation from the start. It was a shame - if he'd had more time to observe how the others behaved, and if he'd known more about their purpose when they'd first been brought to the library, he might've been able to assess the situation better.

Moving forward, were he to ever find himself in another situation like this (gods forbid), he'd simply do what he'd done the entirety of his life: lie about everything, entirely.

The only thing his openly scheming ways had won him in this was Queenie, who agreed to kill the boy. Skull and Esther were dead weight.

And then he heard the gunshot. He watched as Jay fell to the ground.

Finally.

He slapped a hand to his mouth, faking horror. But he didn't do it for Skull or for Esther - the show was only for Annie at this point. He didn't know how long things would play out before they'd be done with everything.
Pants are an illusion. And so is death.

As soon as Jay hit the ground, Esther felt like she couldn't breathe. And the rest happened quickly.

Without her father, there was no reason for her to exist.

Nothing....

Anna came to check on them. She didn't ask why Esther wasn't there. All of her attention was focused on her son's lifeless body lying in the field. She was too much in shock to make any threats.

Before she could, they were all gone. Not to the ether of nothingness, like Esther, but elsewhere....

It was desperately hot. But that didn't matter to everyone in line, queued up for blocks. What was on the marquee? The first Star Wars, of course. It was summer, and nobody in all of Hollywood was going to miss this movie for the world.

To Be Continued....

All our dreams can come true — if we have the courage to pursue them.
