YWU Lore Upkeep

Welcome to the Universe Lore Upkeep Thread. Here is the YWU Lore Hub if you're looking for all established lore so far. This thread is if you want to add something to the lore that you believe will affect other people's stories. A lorekeeper will contact you and help you out, either through PM or in our club. Look below to learn more about lorekeeping!

Guide to Lorekeeping

Lorekeeping Tiers

The other aspect of YWU is Lorekeeping. YWU will have an ever-growing index of lore created by the stories involved in it. Because of the large influx of lore from multiple stories, Lorekeeping is divided into three Tiers.

  • Tier One
    • Everyone starts out at Tier One and can opt out if they decide not to help in the process. Most lore starts at this Tier. Any new information added from stories is digested here, and talked about as a group. Once the Tier decides the lore is suitable, they'll present it to the next Tier.
  • Tier Two
    • Tier Two inspects lore given by Tier One, and either decides whether it can be added to YWU or worked on collaboratively with both Tiers. Tier Two also constructs lore to fill in potential plot holes that haven't been answered yet or was created from certain added lore.
  • Tier Three
    • Tier Three inspects lore given by Tier Two, and either decides whether it can be added to YWU or worked on collaboratively with both Tiers. Tier Three also constructs lore on the highest level of the spectrum, on the things that affect all of YWU. Tier Three is meant to look at the highest levels of lore.

Not all lore is created equal. So, how do you decide which lore should go through which Tier? In reality, it is based on your discretion and experience, as well as those around you. Here's an example.

Imagine you've been approached with an idea to make a country. This would be something that would affect the entire universe, as you're adding a new land to the place, which means new people on that land, new governments, new everything. This would be presented to Tier 3 as it affects all of YWU immensely.

If you wanted to add a new type of magic, that would be something you'd go to Tier 2, but as long as it doesn't effect every other type of magic in YWU, it doesn't need to go all the way to Tier 3.

Now, let's say you're adding a mercenary to the world who worked with an established king in the past. This would be something that is fine with being stopped in Tier 1.

If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask!

Moving Up Tiers

Everyone starts in Tier 1, and can opt out if they want to, but what about getting to Tier 2 yourself? Well, basically that's just about if enjoy lorekeeping and have added to the lore enough and at a nice enough rate. With Tier 3, you'd be affecting lore at a rate that changes YWU fundamentally, so most people wouldn't be in that lore only because it would be someone who's really dedicated to YWU.

Fostering Creativity

When you are a part of Lorekeeping, you are in charge of the lore within the Universe, which is an immense responsbility. However, when a writer comes to you with an idea, it's important to realize that, by establishing Lorekeepers, we are essentially moderating the amount of freedom a writer has with their story. The same is true when one writes in an already established universe. There is a balance here between restricting creativity and enforcing your limits so you can effectively control the amount of lore coming in.

  • Constructive Criticism
    • Your largest job is to improve the lore which mean you obviously may be picky about what lore you accept. However, when you're presented with lore that you may believe is unacceptable or not what you agree with, it's important to not outright destroy the idea. Be honest, but also focusing on improving it isn't of knocking it down.
  • Yes, And!
    • A major rule of improv that we're applying here, this tactic is about applying accepting ideas you're given, and expanding upon them.
  • Collaborate & Include
    • As a lorekeeper, it's important to provide input with the lore before you accept it. Make sure you work with others and collaborate to the idea. Make sure to include other lorekeepers and the person who presented the idea itself. Bouncing ideas around each other helps make the idea better.
  • Kill Your Darlings
    • With the ideation process, perhaps you have a wonderful idea that you really want to stick with. It's amazing! Until maybe someone comes up with something that is just as cool, but both ideas don't work together. Good ideas are great, but it's important to remember not to be afraid to kill your darlings, or don't be afraid to sacrifice good ideas that allow better ones to surface, or make YWU easier in the long run.
