I love "in honor of a cat who means the world to me"! The description and the way you talk about your pet without it seeming cliche is so good. I really like how you write about your cat growing older. I have an eighteen year old cat who is like my best friend so this poem hits close to home <3

P.S. What's your cat's name? My cat's name is Poppy :)

you dip your hand into the water, bracing
yourself against the dock and my arm.
darling, you are my favourite sea monster.
beneath the depths, what lies below is
disguised by our ghosts. you are instead
visible, floodlighted by the sunset.

this is my kind of intimacy. after all,
water imagery is my love language.

Water came down through
the cracks in the ceiling

Spoiler! :
I'm still a big fan of how that sea monster one came out <3 and the lyrics you chose to go with it are super interesting too!

Those last two lines though "this is my kind of intimacy. after all, / water imagery is my love language" there's something that sounds very dangerous about the whole concept of being in love with something that is monstery / ghosty / in the sea - and creates this expectation dissonance for the reader that's really intriguing.

Also 11 is simple, but I love the idea of scrapbook memories, ahhh just a very poetic thought! :)

15/30

i tried to walk a mile in your shoes
to the nearest gas station;
we're out of cigarettes
and i miss the way the smoke
felt against my chest,
igniting more than a fire.

it's like we're cycling through
the same problems over and over;
we're lost inside of your
grandmother's cremated ashes
and suffocated with
the remains of antique lace.

you ask me to speak,
to tell you everything is okay,
but i don't.

you kicked the ashtray over
as we came toward each other
stubbed my cigarette out
against the west wall,
quickly lit another

18/30

(you see,
the weather forecast said
it wouldn't rain until next week)
but last night, i had a dream
the crack in the ceiling
started to drip water.

(and tomorrow,
there won't be any reports
of two people drowning.)

Let them all come down
Let them take a good long look around
Let them see if my rivers won't suit them
Let them drown

blah blah blah
skeleton imagery
dear, darling
you, your, yours
and a fire lit ablaze
from your last
cigarette in the pack.

Once I walked in splendor
Back in the world of my youth
Better to bury all the better days
Than a skeleton’s tooth

~ Skeleton's Tooth

whoopdedoop all of your poems are so lovely !! I really love how you're able to combine like, literal and metaphorical language/images so flawlessly and satisfyingly?

Like "i stayed up until 1 am last night, / painting the ceiling a landscape piece
/ with every shade of our silhouettes." -> you go from this very straightforward "I stayed up too late" idea to "painting the ceiling" (which obviously isn't literally being done) but that barely even registers and there isn't an awkward shift between literal to nonliteral and aaaah I just love it :')

Poem #17 is really interesting and has a lot to dig into, I think! I find it really effective how a lot of the stanzas are almost framed as commands: "look into yourself", "think of that", "feel your heartbeat". That imperative tone creates a sense of being controlled that complements the subject perfectly.

(and tomorrow,
there won't be any reports
of two people drowning.)
My response to this is best summarized by O: but seriously, only you could add a what-could-have-been-way-too-melodramatic plot twist to a poem and have it just work c:

gmo your latest poem is just absolutely *chef's kiss* :') Especially love the three-element list "you, your, yours", it adds this super intriguing mood of possession to the poem :D

You are going so strong chi! Well on track to 30/30 poems for this NaPo and gahh they're all awesome! Can't wait to see what other lovely skeleton-and-cigarette imagery you come up with <333
When you're faced with something you don't understand, I think the most natural thing but also least interesting thing you can be is afraid.

20/30
we balanced
on fallen tree branches,
pretending the ground
wasn't there and wasn't important.
i've always wondered
what happens if a tree falls
in a forest and nobody is around
because i frequently see
similarities in my own existence.

honestly i've been falling
and collapsing and breaking
every bone in my ribcage
and even constantly repeating
the same cycle over for so long,
thinking i can still pretend
that carrying both of
our weights without snapping
the branches is possible.

(this is what happens
when you love nature and
it doesn't love you back.)

One summer,
then all of this is gone

21/30

i have been questioning
how many days we've spent
alone, spread apart across
these two conflicting points:
the highest peak of your ceiling
and the lowest void under your bed.
it feels like your fingernails
continually digging into my skin,
steadily reversing and accelerating
on the same interwoven surface.
my skin isn't going anywhere,
but it's constantly changing.

I thought about things
I thought that I'd soon be forgetting

22/30
i have been sleeping on
your side of the bed, restless,
often shifting into positions
too compressed for my
one-size-too-small skeleton.
every fly on my wall is
impatiently counting to ten,
the lights are starting to dim,
and i'm still awake.

I can see you in my sleep
Playing the points for all you're worth
Walking gingerly across the bruised earth

~ Your Belgian Things

Spoiler! :

Ooooh 21 and 22 are so solid! I like the repetition of insomnia / sleeplessness in your poetry, I think it works really well as a metaphor / vibe etc. And the way your twisting familiar phrases in poem 22 is just excellent, the language comes across as both casual and tragic.

The opening of 21 too was just really powerful, and I think can be taken in quite a few directions. Your metaphors are always so interesting and poignant - the whole skin + fingernails is really memorable. I'm still really enjoying your poetry, and looking forward to the rest of your napo! Wonderful job so far!
